I can't decide if 1) Meghan has genuinely pissed off some key palace people, either family or inner circle or 2) whole thing is a beat up to sell papers.
I did think she and Harry would be given a longer honeymoon with the press. Even Fergie had a couple of years of being 'breath of fresh air'.

QueenOfTheAndals · 27/11/2018 20:49

Could be a bit of both @Quantumblue. The "men in grey" are apparently used to the royals doing what they're told, if you believe those stories.

Can someone explain to me why titles are refused as in the case of James and Louise? If they are Lord and Lady why not Prince and Princess if they are entitled to use them, I’m a bit confused!

I think it's mostly to do with Charles's notions of slimming down the RF. It was just easier to do it with an announcement that to have new Letters Patent issued.

What will really be interesting is what happens with Harry and Meghan's children. They will be entitled to Prince and Princess when Charles becomes king. But following the Wessex precedent, they would continue to be called Lord and Lady.

Of course, Charles could issue new Letters Patent and clarify the whole business.

Quantumblue · 27/11/2018 20:59

I think it is to avoid lots of princes and princesses floating around in each generation because they are cousins of the monarch.

When Meghan’s pregnancy was first announced we discussed titles for Baby Sussex.
Due to current letters patent, as the second grandson of the Monarch, Harry’s children can only be styled as Lord or Lady, until Charles accedes the throne.
Harry has a subsidiary title; Earl of Dumbarton, so that would be for a boy. Lady X Mountbatten Windsor for a girl.
I very much doubt there will be an upgrade of titles for either the Wessex or Sussex children when the DofE and HM pop off.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 27/11/2018 21:21

Marchioness Grin

QueenOfTheAndals · 27/11/2018 21:25

I think in title hierarchy it goes princess>duchess>marchioness>countess>viscountess?

Thanks for the explanation Seneca and Quantum though I am still confused as to why Beatrice and Eugenie are Princesses and James and Louise are only Lord and Lady (but really are Prince and Princess) if it’s because Charles wants to slim down the monarchy why did it not start with B&E? Although I am sure it was Sarah and Andrew who wanted titles for their children so I guess they insisted as it was their “right” it just seems weird to me if your children are entitled to a title why go for a lesser title? Surely then it should be no title at all?

Paradyning · 27/11/2018 21:31

Their parents didn't want them styled HRH and all the baggage that brings. (Although they enjoy the other baggage clearly)

Quantumblue · 27/11/2018 21:38

Yes the difference is in the parents. The Yorks wanted their daughters to be princesses and the Wessexes thought their dc would have an easier life with lesser titles.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 27/11/2018 21:40

@BettyBoo

There is quite a big age gap between Eugenie & Louise.
The thinking probably changed in the Royal Family in those 14 years.

There was a suggestion that Beatrice and Eugenie should revert to Lady when they turned 18; but Andrew ( I think understandably) refused.

QueenOfTheAndals · 27/11/2018 21:41

The Cambridges are out in Leicester tomorrow, but it'll be a somber occasion as they're paying tribute to the victims of the helicopter crash.

SenecaFalls · 27/11/2018 21:47

Actually, I'm not sure that it was solely down to what Edward and Sophie wanted for personal reasons. I think it more likely that it came from Charles through the Queen, with agreement from the Wessexes. I think that if Beatrice and Eugenie had been born later, they would have been downgraded as well.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 27/11/2018 21:51

I think it’s fair to say that CP Victoria of Sweden is not very interested in fashion. However the last 3 trouser suits on the trot have just been awful. Colour and cut are awful; they look like they are from the 80s and not in a good way.

Those trouser suits look like something Stefanie Powers might've worn in Hart to Hart (if you're old enough to remember that!).

I loved hart to hart! Thanks queen for that memory. 😀

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 27/11/2018 22:04

Thanks for your input everyone, I find in fascinating, it must be so weird in that family, everyone jostling for position and status, as it has been since the first King of England I guess, nothing changes much really when you think about it, apart from our lot keep their heads.

Paradyning · 27/11/2018 22:06

I wouldn't be surprised if that green trouser suit is her mother's. They often pull vintage clothes out to wear.
She usually looks really good. Especially in dresses. Maybe her stylist is on holiday.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 27/11/2018 22:07

I loved hart to hart! And they even made dolls.
I see where you’re coming from re: CP Victoria.
Pastel trouser suits was very 1980s (Miami vice anyone).
However CP Vic will have to shake out that vice like bun and get an 80s blow out.

Ok, I digressed. No more 80s Saturday night tv.

Here is a video about Meghan made before the wedding but still worth a watch

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 27/11/2018 22:07

Dearie me, those trouser suits must have been ordered from the Freeman’s catalogue circa 1979, I hope she didn’t stand too close to a naked flame.
