I had no idea that David & Wallis were Nazi supporters until I watched The Crown. They met Hitler. Had he stayed King, he would have thrown the country under the bus, I’m sure.

PawneeParksDept · 25/11/2018 11:43

Do you remember the scandal recently of the photos of the Queen doing the Nazi salute aged about 7? It was because Uncle David was teaching them.

Animosity to him only increased after his brothers death, then, a young married mother taking The Crown when a fit and able man had stood aside to follow his fancies?

He was considered weak, embarrassing and a coward and as implied in The Crown traitorous

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 25/11/2018 11:43

I’m not so sure. Hitler grew very popular in Germany because he looked after his people after the depression following WW1.
I don’t think Edward V111 would have betrayed his country, but he was a moderniser and there was a risk he could be manipulated.
I wouldn’t be surprised if his abdication was politically motivated. Wallis being a divorcee was an easy scapegoat

Bloominglovely · 25/11/2018 11:43

Please tell me we are not now going down the route of feeling sorry for the financial state of the RF?!?!?!?! Their GM is the richest woman in the UK. They can cash in any of their buildings, their land, their jewels. They can reduce their staff count. Despite what a few threads have recently implied, they are not living in old damp houses with bowls collecting dripping rainwater or wearing extra coats inside because they can’t heat the entire house. However sadly this is the reality of many of their subjects. Some of the subjects will sleep on the streets in freezing weather while they wonder which of their residences they will sleep in that night. It is wrong on so many levels.

On a more frivolous note re Diana wearing high heels after her divorce, didn’t Nicole Kidman shout the very same thing outside on the court s steps when her divorce from Tom Cruise was finalised?

PawneeParksDept · 25/11/2018 11:49

At that point any association to Hitler was considered a threat to national security

The Mosleys association with him was actually not that deep, yes, he attended their wedding and Oswald shared his views and picked his brain but they didn't plot together against the UK so to speak.

Nevertheless they were both imprisoned as threats to the nation for the entire duration of the war.

Things become very black and white in war time and remained that way for many years

With us or against us etc

UrsulaPandress · 25/11/2018 11:54

I have zero sympathy for Wallis.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 25/11/2018 11:54

@Bloominglovely

I don’t think anyone thinks the RF is poor.
I think these threads have highlighted how amazingly rich they are.
Amazing clothes, multiple properties at their disposal. It is an incredible life, and even royalists on this thread have said the awareness makes them a bit uncomfortable

Clionba · 25/11/2018 12:09

The Queen owns the most valuable stamp collection in the world.

queenofarles · 25/11/2018 12:34

the DoC does not/can't accept free clothes, , but what about DoS ? does it apply to her too? most of her clothes don't fit her properly, the oscar de la renta dress and the off the shoulder dress she wore to trooping the colour looked like samples. i think designers don't even charge them full retail price, most probably some sort of special discount.the big payoff for any designer is M wearing the clothes, but saying that M and jessica split the money 50/50 is actually too strange to believe Confused . I'm pretty sure that PC staff would ask for proof of purchase, bills ,transactions between the stylist and the designers.

PawneeParksDept · 25/11/2018 12:38

The gift rule applies to DoS yes, this was made clear at their wedding, many corporate gifts were returned

Minimammoth · 25/11/2018 12:40

I am worried about Bea’s new boyfriend Edo.

WindyWednesday · 25/11/2018 12:46

Why Minimomouth.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/11/2018 13:06

I'm pretty sure that PC staff would ask for proof of purchase, bills ,transactions between the stylist and the designers

I wouldn't be too sure. Given Charles's history around the disposal of his own freebies, insisting on too many questions might not be wise ... though of course how he expects others to behave and what he does himself have often been two very different things

TipseyTorvey · 25/11/2018 13:17

I think MM will find her style after the baby is born but she's going to struggle til then as just as she works out an outfit she'll change shape again and I suspect from the way she's looking now she will be a lovely curvy pregnant lady puttiing on weight everywhere and not the tall willowy -with-a-perfect-bump that Kate was. She'd be better off embracing the high street maternity wear as pp have said and just relax into the pregnancy and enjoy it.

Minimammoth · 25/11/2018 13:18

Apparently he was engaged for 7 yrs and still living with fiancé and 2 yr old son. I know we don’t really know the story, but I hope he’s a good egg.

OlennasWimple · 25/11/2018 13:41

When I was pregnant I basically had two dresses and two pairs of trousers plus one jacket for work - the only time I've ever managed to do the minimalist wardrobe thing. Unfortunately Meghan can't really do that - she needs much more variety than most working pregnant women!

On her personal wealth, was she resident in Canada when filming Suits? And she might have invested cleverly, and have an income from that. In any case, she isn't poor

mrscampbellblackreturns · 25/11/2018 13:46

True, MM isn't poor and she will never ever be poor again no matter what happens in her life.

I would hope the RF have learnt it is better to pay people off generously to ensure discretion and no embarrassing endorsements/interviews a la Fergie. Not that I am suggesting MM is heading for a divorce, just being pragmatic.

WindyWednesday · 25/11/2018 13:50

Woah, still living with his fiancé? That’s got to be a red flag surely.

WindyWednesday · 25/11/2018 13:51

I’ll have to google him. He looks rather dashing.

Tortycat · 25/11/2018 13:55

How did meghan and harry meet? Id assumed in the US but reading some previous posts it looks like she was already friendly with rich kids over here (millie Macintosh/ eddie redmayne etc)?

OlennasWimple · 25/11/2018 14:05

Torty - they were set up on a blind date through a mutual friend - a Ralph Lauren PR person, whose dad is a baron

And I'm looking forward to the forthcoming movie of their courtship - hope it's as hilarious as the Kate and William one Grin

queenofarles · 25/11/2018 14:21

i thought it was arranged by Misha nonoo,?

Clionba · 25/11/2018 14:31

She came over in the summer of 2016 to go to Wimbledon, and met Harry on a blind date (at Soho House!). Their third date was a trip to Botswana. Whirlwind. By September 2017 she'd given up everything and moved to the UK. A huge risk, but they must have been sure.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/11/2018 14:43

I would hope the RF have learnt it is better to pay people off generously to ensure discretion and no embarrassing endorsements/interviews a la Fergie

I'm trying to keep this general rather than about individuals, but if you're thinking non disclosure agreements, doesn't that depend on where they're made?

I'm no legal expert, but would a NDA drawn up under UK law be effective if its subject chose to sell a story elsewhere?

AFifthOfKoolAid · 25/11/2018 15:09

@Olennaswimple the Harry and Meghan movie is amazing (especially the "he Botswana'd her" line). I've been trying to find it on UK DVD but can't anywhere. Surely such a cinematic masterpiece would be a bestseller?! I don't understand why it's not in stores! It was on Channel 5 the night of the wedding but I had a mighty hangover, I need to watch it with fresh eyes.
