I have mixed feelings on the press issue. I do think that during official events etc, kate and William should make an effort because that's part of the job. But while they might not be hounded by paparazzi on motorbikes a la Diana, I do feel their lives are restricted. Because even if the press isn't stalking them, they'll happily buy random photos. A few threads pages ago someone was saying they have plenty of privacy and very few photos of them come out. I suspect that's not because they're being left alone but because they're remaining out of sight a lot of the time. I'm sure there are places where their presence is just left alone (eg I thought it interesting that those photos in Waitrose a year or so ago were not taken by a local but someone visiting...) but before Pippa's wedding we kept seeing pictures of Kate or her mum leaving Pippa's house and Kate trying to hider her face. I don't blame her for that.

Having said all that, and demonstrated that I'm mostly on their side, I DO think William needs to lighten up a little. He does come across as a bit of a grump a lot of the time. But when you see him in unguarded moments, especially with kate, he seems like a much nicer person.

californiascreaming · 12/11/2018 09:56

Thanks for the new thread...
Do you know what I like both Kate and Megan - they are different people at different stages of very different lives - they just happen to have married royal brothers and that is what shows.
Back to the important stuff...
I love Kate's military style coat.
Also the pregnant princess photo is gorgeous...
And the more I see of her the more I am liking Mrs Macron - which is weird as that style doesn't usually appeal to me...

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 12/11/2018 10:00

Don’t the RF have a gentleman’s agreement with the press which guarantees them their privacy?

Between here and that thread in Chat asking if William has someone who shaves him, it would seem that they are frequently seen out and about in Waitrose etc by locals and left to it without much hassle.

percheron67 · 12/11/2018 10:05

Rather wish Meghan would stop wearing the beret - maybe she wants to star in Allo Allo,

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 12/11/2018 10:11

Link to thread in Chat about William being shaved (oo-er)

I like Meghan’s little berets. I think they really suit her and looked lovely on her mum at the wedding.
Bearing in mind she’s only ever been seen in a panama; we cannot expect the Full Maxima just yet.

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/11/2018 10:12

Mary looks resplendent in that pregnant photo but it also looks a little like the OTT Christmas (or is that Kristmas?) cards the Kardashians used to send!

The Danish royals do have form for unusual portraits...

I meant please can someone post a link to the thread in chat?

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/11/2018 10:25

Some photos I've not seen of yesterday's event now - this view of Kate's hat makes it look like one of those neck pillows you'd wear on a long flight. And Meghan's suit looks more petrol blue than navy at times.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 12/11/2018 10:29

I’ve seen that portrait before; it’s totally creepy.

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/11/2018 10:35

It looks like the cover of a Virginia Andrews novel from the 90s, doesn't it?

The comment about William not liking the press is interesting. Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace publish future royal engagements but Kensington Palace do not. So we know about the Queen's official engagements in advance, but not those of William and Harry.

Clionba · 12/11/2018 10:43

I caught up on that Prince Charles documentary, which I thought was very interesting. I know it was referred to on another thread. William said he'd like C to spend more time with the grandchildren, in contrast to press stories. I thought that Harry was more open, but does display some of his Pa's irritability....

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/11/2018 10:52

Kensington Palace tend to publish W&H's engagements a week or so in advance, and usually on social media.

The Highgrove Garden book is a treasure chest of trivia. Charles hates plastic so much that if a garden tool arrives with a plastic handle, he makes the workmen replace the plastic with a wooden handle.

SilentIsla · 12/11/2018 11:04

William and Kate know how it’s done, properly, in every respect. Kate has known from the start, it seems to me, and has not needed any “practice” for the role. She just knows what is appropriate and what is not.

Sitting in the grandest church in the land in such an occasion as was marked yesterday, one adjusts ones expression to one which is suitably solemn. The D of S appears not to know that. A small smirk played around her mouth. Surely one FEELS in such an occasion, anyway, and one doesn’t need to compose their features. Both the Queen, and Kate’s expressions on the balcony were clearly genuine and mournful.

As for holding hands in church on such an occasion - just no.

SilentIsla · 12/11/2018 11:04

...on such an occasion

SilentIsla · 12/11/2018 11:06

one’s expression...

RosinaAlmaviva · 12/11/2018 11:17

I like Kate's headbands. Everyone else hesitates before wearing a simple plastic headband in case they are mocked for looking like a 1980s Sloane Ranger, but honey badger don't care, honey badger is going to wear an ENORMOUS HEADBAND OF ACTUAL VELVET. In its total defiance of current standards of acceptability it has a lot in common with the Queen sticking to the exact same handbag, shoes and gloves she's worn since the 1960s. Neither of them want to look like everyone else.

My only reservation: it bothered me that the velvet on the headband didn't match the velvet on the coat.

owlshooting · 12/11/2018 11:32

Someone mentioned that this was MM's first Remembrance service. It wasn't as she was there last year , before she was married. However, this one was obviously on a completely different scale. I don't know if she has had relatives killed in WW1, but I suspect not. Everyone else there, including Kate, will have have known of a family member who was killed , even distantly. She doesn't't have that personal connection with the event. I don't think Americans make a big deal of either war, as they came into them later and lost fewer personnel.

I must be very strange for her.

I do agree that she seems lost without Harry - on the balcony she looked like she was a bit dazed. I also think they need to stop so much clinging on together, it looks a bit needy and not very professional.

Haworthia · 12/11/2018 11:33

Quickly placemarking because I forgot to placemark the last thread and then had to read 20 pages over two days Grin

I wish there was a masterpost of all the books people have recommended, because my Amazon wishlist is starting to look a bit unwieldy!

owlshooting · 12/11/2018 11:38

I also think Kate and William make an amazing team. They are totally in tune with one another , support and respect each other. If they make the Press' life harder, who can blame them? William had to watch his mother's life being made absolute hell for years , he is naturally wary.
They will be like the Queen and PP I think, lifelong partners who support each other, but without the alleged infidelity on PP's side.

AFifthOfKoolAid · 12/11/2018 11:59

Meghan went to visit US troops in Afghanistan before she even met Harry. Her husband is a military man, and she has been prominent at the Invictus Games. She may not have lost relatives in a World War, but she seems to be supportive of those who serve in the armed forces, I am confident that she was not at all surprised by the solemnity and ceremony of the day. She didn't look lost to me; I'm not sure what expression one should have at a rememberance Sunday wreath laying, but she didn't have a massive grin, she wasn't blubbing into a handkerchief... She just looked normal. I disagree that she looked dazed.

SenecaFalls · 12/11/2018 12:15

A small smirk played around her mouth.

I watched most of the day's events on YouTube last night. This did not happen.

I really liked the coat Meghan wore at the Cenotaph and Kate's coat at Westminster Abbey. As for the beret, speaking from experience, it is a good choice for someone not used to wearing hats. Doria looked great in hers at the wedding.

As for Americans and Remembrance Day, our Veterans' Day, which was yesterday, but observed today as a national holiday, is less about honoring the dead and more about thanking those who have served. We have Memorial Day in May that is specifically for honoring the fallen.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 12/11/2018 12:18

Love this comment from Go Fug Yourself
I also like the idea that Kate might just start stapling random shit to her head and calling it a hat. This sort of looks like a tiny neck pillow that you use so that you can sleep on a plane, surprisingly repurposed.

Harebellmeadow · 12/11/2018 12:20

Back to Queen Anne - does anyone know what illnesses or problems could cause 12 miscarriages/stillbirths, and for child mortality to be 100% within the privileged and petted Royal Family? Extremely tragic.
