Kate does try to look boring.
However the pre marriage pics showed that she had no problem looking sexy when she was younger.
You get glimpses of Kate’s sassines in her evening wear.

I wish William was secure enough in himself to not mind his wife looking fabulous all of the time. In this case, the apple (William) does not fall far from the tree (Charles).

Willem Alexander looks extraordinarily prod of Maxima for being so stylish. Having a beautiful consort, does not make him any less of a King.

TipseyTorvey · 13/11/2018 06:57

Curly I hear what you're saying about Kate and how she could dial it up but the press went wild for Diana the more flamboyant she became with all the 'most glamorous woman' in the world headlines, perhaps it's less about William's ego and more about protecting herself and her family from the crazy level of paparazzi. Maybe she wears amazing glam stuff to private parties? Hope so.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 13/11/2018 06:58

Do we honestly think it's William's insecurity that means she makes boring choices? I wondered whether she's just seen the way the media plays and has done it for her own self preservation. I would do the same. Look at poor MM. Slated for her designer choices atm.

The Vogue thing also shows a degree of steeliness. Who wouldn't love to play dress up?! But she didn't give into it.

I agree the front cover was truly dreadful. Unflattering apart from anything else, which is quite a feat given it's Vogue!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 13/11/2018 07:02

Yes perhaps it’s true that Kate us trying to reduce press interest.
However no one forced her to be on the Vogue Cover.
As pp said, it would have been a great opportunity for her to showcase British designers. She wasn’t even asked to do an interview.

Diana on the other did look great, but she did have a relationship with certain journalists and pre internet, did use the press to her advantage.
She was in part responsible for whipping up media interest in her. Unfortunately , once the genie was out of the bottle; there was nothing she could do to stop it.

BigGreenOlives · 13/11/2018 07:10

I missed the last thread completely so I’m pleased to have caught up again.

I really liked the Harper’s ‘old’ photos, fun remembering old looks (that I had but didn’t look so good in). I thought the DofCa looked lovely at the weekend and couldn’t help but notice how tiny HRM looks now.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 13/11/2018 07:16

HM is very stooped now; hence she looks smaller. I think that is the clearest indication that she is aging. She still looks radiant when she smiles. We need to make the most of her whilst she is still here....

QueenOfTheAndals · 13/11/2018 07:20

If you don't want to dress up then don't agree to be in Vogue! Town & Country, Good Housekeeping, fine, but VOGUE? Get that couture on! And if you want to still look a bit 'country' and down to earth then inject some humour into the shoot - playing with Lupo wearing an evening dress and wellies, or something amusing like that.

Was Diana ever in Vogue? I recall a gorgeous gowns and tiaras shoot she did with Mario Testino but that might've been Vanity Fair.

“Was Diana in Vogue ?”
Yes. The ballgown shot inside was iconic and troops in Afghanistan used the pic as a pinup. These were the James Hewitt years.

I agree Kate could have done “dressed down ballgown” with wellies & Lupo. Could have been so cool.

I agree with everyone above. It's Vogue. Go for it, or don't do it. I don't think that was Diana's only Vogue cover?

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 13/11/2018 07:41

I wonder whether it was because Kate didn’t want to have the Diana comparison? The Diana vogue shoot was fabulous. Maybe she doesnt want that level of being an icon. I don’t think it’s her. And I’m sure she’s very mindful of the press intrusion that Diana had.

QueenOfTheAndals · 13/11/2018 07:42

But then why agree to be in Vogue, the worlds premier fashion magazine, at all?

Those dungarees look like they'd give the wearer an uncomfortable wedgie! But Kate seems to like that look, I remember seeing a photo of her and William after doing a long hike up a mountain in India and she was wearing skin-tight wedgie jeans. All I could think of was how uncomfortable that must've been in that heat, and also hello thrush!

I think Kate looked lovely in the Vogue shoot. Very fresh and natural.

I love Letizia's striped dress.

QueenOfTheAndals · 13/11/2018 07:49

Oh yes, she looked lovely and it would've been fine for a shoot in Horse & Hound but I expected more from Vogue.

Yes that's true Queen. I'd have liked to seen her look more glamorous, like Diana did in her Vogue shoot.

I'm new to these threads so apologies if this has been discussed in detail, but has anyone been to see Meghan's dress yet? I'd love to know what people thought. I thought she looked beautiful on the day, but was disappointed when I saw the dress. It was just so plain, and didn't look special at all. The fabric looked cheap (although it undoubtedly wasn't) and I didn't like the cut. It made me realise how much it's about the person wearing it because she looked glowing and stunning on the day, but I wouldn't give the dress a second glance in a shop.

The veil was gorgeous as was the tiara.

Paradyning · 13/11/2018 08:11

This is my fave vogue cover. Adore the jewels. Sadly they were loaned so not seen again

QueenOfTheAndals · 13/11/2018 08:14

I haven't, but it sounds like a good exhibition as it has audio commentary from her about the dress and veil. I'm a sucker for simplicity and I thought it was a beautiful dress. As someone said on another thread, we're so used to seeing very close fitting bridal dresses that we forget that true couture has always been body skimming rather than bodycon. And it was a perfect foil for the intricate veil and also for Meghan's face, which let's face it, is her best accessory!

fredleighton · 13/11/2018 08:21

I agree Queen, it made me realise how beautiful she must be to carry off such a simple dress. She looked stunning.

myrtleWilson · 13/11/2018 08:26

Thanks for the "through the years" link from earlier - I really liked that retrospective of Kate's looks. I had forgotten a couple of her dresses from the Polish trip - I especially liked the "architectural' one as something different but well suited to her.

QueenOfTheAndals · 13/11/2018 08:38

I've noticed that Kate gets more adventurous with clothes when she's on overseas trips. I loved the hippy/boho vibe she sported in India.

Ah I love this thread. It's become part of my morning routine, to the point where DH was chatting to me this morning and I was completely distracted by the transformation of Kate's hair, so got a huffy 'will you stop looking at your phone for one minute?' hahaha. Suitably told off (I hate it when people ignore me for their phones, so can hardly complain).

I quite liked the Vogue shoot. I think because major evening wear was expected, it was actually a nice change. And I agree that she does channel a countrified vibe in her down wear - those Penelope Chilvers boots she favours for example.

@clionba me too! I guess money does buy you hair happiness Grin

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 13/11/2018 09:26

My wedding dress was very similar to Meghan's. It didn’t photograph particularly well but was much better in reality.

GrumbleBumble · 13/11/2018 09:39

My wedding dress was very simple (no lace, beading, embroidery etc) when I was in the shop trying it on every bride/mother of the bride that saw me in it went wow how did I miss that one (it was department store not bridal shop so not a huge range to choose from). Everyone had walked passed it because it was nothing to look at on the hanger. I'm tall and hourglass and it fitted me like a glove. Several others tried it and it swamped them or looked too plan but it worked brilliantly on me. It about the right dress for the right person. My DH's granny raved about my dress every time she saw me until her death some 10 years after our wedding.

AhoyDelBoy · 13/11/2018 09:54

..playing with Lupo wearing an evening dress and wellies.. someone get Queen a job at Vogue, pronto! This would have been perfect! Shock

SilentIsla · 13/11/2018 10:04

I disagree Kate is trying not to outshine William. He is a prince and looks perfectly secure to me.
