Giving up on Double Wear

Owllwo · 26/10/2018 10:15

I’ve worn it for many years but earlier this year it started to look terrible on my skin, despite nothing in my routine changing. It just kind of sits on top of my skin and clots into small bits, it looks like I have dry flaky skin.

I changed my face wash, moisturiser and primer multiples times, bought new brushes and blenders and tested out applying it at different times but nothing has worked Sad

I’m going to try a new foundation and get a few samples, although that’s always difficult, but was thinking of trying the following:

  1. Fenty
  2. Huda
  3. Make up Forever
  4. Nars Luminous All Day

I need full coverage and don’t like a flat matte finish.

Has anyone tried these foundations? Or moved from ELDW to something better?

I like ELDW but I can never get primer to sit under it and I need a really rich moisturiser under it.
Have you tried without primer? I find most primers make my foundation slide around and be patchy (I know some people swear by it but not for me).
Also I love putting a setting spray on top of finished face to keep it looking fresh throughout day or it doesn’t tend to look a bit ‘blergh’ after 8+ hrs.

I have MUF and don’t particularly like it. It’s much drier and more matte than DW. Also find colours to be a bit strange.

I’ve heard fenty and huda are similar in terms of being fairly matte so depends what finish you like.

I want to try nars but there’s not a counter near me to find what colour I need!

Bananacentral · 26/10/2018 10:27

(Sorry I’ve just seen you don’t like matte finish! I’d steer clear of MUF unless you like to use highlights etc)

Bring back the old YSL formula, that was the best full coverage glowy foundation. Sad

WeeSausage · 26/10/2018 10:29

When my skin does that it means I need to exfoliate. Could that be it?

Owllwo · 26/10/2018 10:31

Yes unfortunately I’ve tried every combination possible, no primer/extra primer, no moisturiser/extra moisturiser Sad

Shock I didn’t realise MUFE is more matte than ELDW, I might give that a miss.

I’ve never tried YSL foundation but love their glow primer and mascara. Might test one out instead of the MUFE.

Nars gets such great reviews, I’m excited to try it but I’m dubious about the coverage.

Sausage I’ve tried that too. Invested in some exfoliating and moisture masks and use a regular scrub.

Agree ELDW is dire. It's drying and makes you looks like a vampire in pics.

The MUFE ultra high def is not as matte as the ELDW, it's more of a satin finish. It's really lovely and I always get compliments on my skin when I wear it BUT I feel it doesnt have enough coverage for me (I cant be arsed with concealer and it wears badly over my nose and chin).

So now I wear l'oreal pro matte as my every day fdtn mixed with some LRP coverage foundation to get a good colour. I use Urban Decay all nighter for special events as the coverage and wear are amazing. However it's very very drying (my skin is really dry the next day after wearing it)

HildaZelda · 26/10/2018 10:46

I like ELDW but I couldn't wear it everyday or my skin would get quite dry (and I have normal/oily skin)
Have you tried Mac Studio Fix at all? I find it very good, but be prepared to argue with whoever is on the counter as they try and sell you an orange shade because 'you need warming up'
Get a sample first.

Gillybobs · 26/10/2018 10:58

I wore it for years until I found Clinique Beyond Perfecting which gives the same level of coverage but has a glowy finish.

Owllwo · 26/10/2018 11:01

Hmmm maybe I will sample the MUFE then.

I have 3 Mac foundations: studio fix, sculpt and pro. I couldn’t get on with any of them. I found them to be paint like and lots of layers were needed for decent coverage but then I looked caked. The sculpt just slid off my face too.

And they did try to match me to an orange/pink shade Grin

I also have the Amarni Silk and Laura Mercier silk creme foundations. Both are lovely but offer rubbish coverage.

Sad why would ELDW let me down like this.

I had exactly the same thing as you with all MAC foundation, I used it for 10 years then all of a sudden it looked awful! Used to flake especially my forehead and chin. I now use The Ordinary hylaronic acid serum followed by the plant derived Squalane serum and a Clinique dewy foundation. It looks so much better! Highly recommend.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 26/10/2018 11:08

I was using Double Wear Nude cushion stick but it didn't half enhance the dryness on my chops! Swapped back to Clinique Beyond Perfecting. I need a lot less of it on my face and it's quite moisturising. I use their primer too; it came free with it and I've really liked it. Usually I'm allergic to primers so I was a bit apprehensive about trying it.

OneMoreForExtra · 26/10/2018 11:09

Surprised by the people not liking ELDW - used it for years, and I have very dry sensitive skin so am usually the first to reject a product. I keep it very simple and just apply it about 5 minutes after Olay day lotion, no anything else, and am not experiencing the clotty flaky thing. Sorry it's happening to you OP! I have squirreled away the recs for Clinique Beyond Perfecting just in case...

Sexnotgender · 26/10/2018 11:12

Fenty is MATTE.

I was excited when it came out and went to try it, tried it on my hand and it was almost chalky it was so matte.

I like a dewy finish but more a light/medium coverage.

Owllwo · 26/10/2018 11:12

Interesting! I have the ordinary hyaluronic acid so will look into getting the squalane serum too.

My skin is absolutely fine, not dry or irritable in any way. It actually looks better (healthy wise) without foundation but I have such ugly rosacea patches and clusters of discolouration so could never go with anything less than full coverage and still feel happy with my skin.

I’ve read that the Clinique Beyond Perfecting doesn’t match well to those NC20/1W1 and lighter. Have you found this to be true?

LesAnya · 26/10/2018 11:13

Have you tried Hourglass? Their vanish stick is has a matte finish, but they have other liquid foundations too.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 26/10/2018 11:14

Can you nip into Debenhams and HoF and get a load of samples?

Pity such a Holy Grail product has suddenly given up on you, must be so frustrating.

Are you sure you actually need a full coverage foundation? I thought I did for ages and then I twigged that actually, medium was fine- I just needed a decent concealer for any problem areas.

I have the stick foundation of MUF full coverage- it’s definitely not matte and pretty buildable. Same for the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation- definitely worth a sample.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 26/10/2018 11:15

I am as pale as a ghost (I'm actually a goth, style-wise) and I find it matches nicely. The lady on the Clinique counter in John Lewis in Liverpool matched me!

PositivePeach · 26/10/2018 11:19

I've never used ELDW, too drying for me. I use their serum foundation which is pretty good coverage, although I have to add darkening drops as they matched me too light.

I do use Nars. All day luminous weightless is great - I can't see the luminous in it, but I forgive it for the great coverage and stating power.
Nars - natural radiant longwear is awful!!
I do find Nars colours a bit bizarre. They always try and match me with a peach undertone when I need the olive.

As other posters have mentioned, Clinique is my favourite for dewy skin. Even better glow is my daytime pick, and beyond perfecting for night.

Sexnotgender · 26/10/2018 11:22

Clinique even better glow is my favourite too but it’s not full coverage.

ffffffffsake · 26/10/2018 11:37

Following... I love my ELDW (1C0) but I fear it may be causing the congestion on my skin - I've changed everything in my routine/diet to try and combat it except changing my foundation as this is my HG as a pale/spotty/oily person.

Branleuse · 26/10/2018 11:39

Theres a really good boots no7 one thats for older skin that is brilliant and i think feels like high end but mid range price. If you go in theyll let you test or give you testers

BrightLightsAndSound · 26/10/2018 12:32

I found DW too drying and now i wear DW light and its fab!

user1457017537 · 26/10/2018 12:36

I like the Chanel compact foundation that has now been discontinued. I refuse to buy the foundation that is in a sponge. Must last about a week.

Naicethings · 26/10/2018 12:36

I have fallen in love with Skin Illusion by Clarins. Glowy, long lasting, but does not feel heavy or cakey on the skin. I also tried a sample of Parure Gold by Guerlain. This is also of a similar ilk, though £20 more. I have combination to oily skin, and a dusting of NARS reflecting loose powder keeps it all in place throughout the day.

SorrelForbes · 26/10/2018 12:55

I've moved away from ELDW to their DW Nude, Water Fresh. Lasts well and great on my dry skin. I also like the Dior Nude.
