Giving up on Double Wear

Owllwo · 26/10/2018 10:15

I’ve worn it for many years but earlier this year it started to look terrible on my skin, despite nothing in my routine changing. It just kind of sits on top of my skin and clots into small bits, it looks like I have dry flaky skin.

I changed my face wash, moisturiser and primer multiples times, bought new brushes and blenders and tested out applying it at different times but nothing has worked Sad

I’m going to try a new foundation and get a few samples, although that’s always difficult, but was thinking of trying the following:

  1. Fenty
  2. Huda
  3. Make up Forever
  4. Nars Luminous All Day

I need full coverage and don’t like a flat matte finish.

Has anyone tried these foundations? Or moved from ELDW to something better?

I like YSL Touché eclat foundation. I find it has good coverage but dewy finish. I tried their fusion ink also which is great coverage but really really drying.

DeadButDelicious · 27/10/2018 08:42

I swear by Dermacol. That stuff is FULL coverage. A little goes a long way and it's not matte (I kinda wish it was but you can't have everything). I'm very pale but with stubbornly rosy cheeks and red patches, they do a shade that's perfect for me that covers all that right up. It's not too expensive either, around £10 a tube.

Richlyfruited · 27/10/2018 08:44

I often mix DW with moisturiser or primer too and it works really well for me Smile

My oily, spot scarred face has always really affected my confidence and I really love DW for its coverage but it is drying even on my skin!

Anjelika · 27/10/2018 08:54

I've been using EL DW for donkeys years but it doesn't look quite right on me any more. I now use Dior Diorskin Forever over the summer then mix it with DW the rest of the time. It feels really light and somehow cooling when you put it on but it covers the red patches on my cheeks really well, which only DW has managed in the past. It's still a bit matte looking but I have tried many many supposed long lasting DW replacements and for me this has been the best. Do report back though OP on how you get on with the ones you try!

JessicaPeach · 27/10/2018 09:25

I have a bit of a love hate with DW. I find it's better if I mix it with a drop of facial oil but usually when it goes like you describe I do a bit of acid toning on my face and that usually sorts it out.

I love Huda but it's a bit hit and miss as to whether it looks good or not so I don't reach for it.

Current favourite is ex1 foundation that is about £12 in boots (can buy on ASOS and look fantastic too I think) it's the one Adele wore when she won all the Grammy's. I love the coverage, it sits very nicely and is a good colour match. I got the matching powder too which I don't usually do and it's lovely, not at all cakey. Worth trying

saythatagain · 27/10/2018 09:36

I’ll swing and ad IT cosmetics to the list of options. I was introduced to it via my sister in law. Was my usual sceptic self etc, but pleasantly chuffed. Two smallest dots on the brush is sufficient. Easily applied (coming from one who is cack-handed at all thing makeup-related). Great coverage - I too have the dry, flaky forehead, along with a predisposition for red cheeks. I’m 50, soon to be 51. I didn’t want an obvious covering and, after my first attempt (using my sister in laws), I was impressed; I’m not easily impressed!
Good luck with your search.

MustBeThin · 27/10/2018 09:37

I used to use double wear but switched to nars radiant long wear! I love it, it covers everything without looking matte. I have rosacea so go red easily which I hate and if I know I'm having a major flush while wearing the nars and I look in the mirror, I can't see any redness at all. Another good thing is that it pumps out tiny pumps compared to normal foundation so you have more control over how much you pump out so you waste less.

Owllwo · 27/10/2018 10:31

Yes I would love to know how you get on with it please bender and beautifullymixed you’ll have to report back once you’ve tried the Revolution conceal foundation.

Goodness me I have a lot of foundations to try Grin

I’ve tested a few Chanel foundations but only on the back of my hand at the counter and not really noticed any with full coverage. They do seem beautifully luxurious though.

I’m adding Becca, Ex1, Dermacol and Kevyn Aucoin to my research list. I’ll check out reviews and videos before adding it to the sample list but not sure it’ll be as easy to get samples of these.

The Bare Minerals Pro recommendation is interesting. I like Bare Minerals products and have the powder concealer and use a darker shade in their powder foundation as a bronzer. I usually top up the DW with a dusting of the concealer on my cheeks instead of setting powder but lately haven’t been able to do that due to the bitty texture DW has created. I’ll add the Pro to my sample list.

I’ve come out wearing DW again today but mixed in some moisturiser when applying it as suggested. I used the Ordinary natural moisturising factors and it applied nicely but unfortunately, just a couple of hours later and it’s gone to shit again Sad

My skincare routine is ok I think. As I said, my skin is fine without the DW and looks fine in concealer or other foundations but it doesn’t cover the bits I find embarrassing.

I alternate between a mix of the Ordinary’s retinol, hyaluronic acid, buffet, NMF, Argan oil and Nip & Fab’s glycolic fix. Daily I’ll use the Simple Oil make up remover, Nuxe moisturising face wash and EL 24 hour moisturiser as a base for the DW (same one I’ve used for years).

I have mixed it up with various moisturisers and primers plus eliminated products from my weekly routines but nothing seems to have worked. I think it’s time for DW and me to part ways Sad

After some basic research, Dermacol has me very excited at the moment. Seeing as though it’s so inexpensive I might purchase it to use whilst I’m on my experimental quest gathering samples.

No idea where to start with shades which is the only problem with buying something online.

Here’s a video of how it applies and wears through the day (where would we be without YouTube videos Grin):

Chantecaille Future Skin is awesome for a glowy look, it's a gel and really luxurious, however it's also £63, which is on the expensive side.

ThunderOnlyHappens · 27/10/2018 11:50

Try Lancome's Teint Idole foundation as it sits well on the skin and lasts for ages x

Rednaxela · 27/10/2018 11:50

I have the same issue with DW breaking up on my skin. Tried all the tips mentioned - exfoliate, mix with moisturiser, etc. Just doesn't work. I'm a new user and didn't get past the sample! Wore it for 4 weeks and just couldn't make it work.

Still searching for a reliable non greasy foundation. Was gutted as DW has rave reviews online.

So v interested in ideas on this thread!

Iamneverfull · 27/10/2018 11:59

Ask the Dior Counter for a sample of Nude foundation and Forever undercover foundation. I love Dior Nude foundation, its very good coverage and looks like 'nice skin'!

DeadButDelicious · 27/10/2018 20:43

You can get samples of Dermacol on eBay.

I am ghosty pale, I wear shade 208 which is perfect for me. I really like it, I don't even need to use concealer it just covers everything I want covered and evens out everything else.

I occasionally use NYX matte but not flat (it's not matte at all) which is alright but not the full coverage I really want.

Owllwo · 27/10/2018 20:57

I’ll include Dior on my stops, may as well as I’ll be stopping at every other counter Grin I might take a disguise so they don’t chuck me out after 3 hours of scrounging samples.

I’ve ordered 208 in the Dermacol and I’m usually 1W1/NC15-20 so we’ll see how that goes.

From looking at reviews of the recommendations so far it seems like Bare Minerals Pro gets the best so I’m looking forward to trying that and wouldn’t have thought to sample it before this thread, thank you to those who suggested it.

Thank you to everyone who has made a recommendation and been so kind to offer advice Flowers

For those interested, I’ll update on how the Dermacol and samples go.

OP - you and your foundation thread!
I have just ordered the Revolution stick foundation as well as the conceal and define foundation, and also two setting sprays. Grin

At only £5 for the stick foundation and £9 for the liquid, I can have fun playing around (hopefully tomorrow), and maybe find my perfect foundation.

I actually considered Dermacol foundation because of the coverage, but was put off by reviews stating that it never actually set, transferred easily, and became very oily.

I treated myself to a lovely powder last month (I love powder), so am excited to try two new foundations this month. Smile

SimplyPut · 27/10/2018 22:20

I need the coverage but the only combo that works for me is smashbox primer and a small amount of ELDW.

DeadButDelicious · 27/10/2018 22:28

I think the issue some have with Dermacol not setting is that they are using way too much. I cannot stress enough how a little goes a long, long way. I put it on the with a damp real techniques blending sponge and then set it with translucent powder (lunatick cosmetics) and that's me set for the day. I have quite oily skin and it doesn't make it any worse.

PrincessPee · 27/10/2018 22:37

The Bobbi Brown Long Wear one is lovely. Also use their primers - both a matte one and one with a bit of a glow too. Natural but with coverage!

Redkeyboard · 27/10/2018 23:17

Have you tried bare minerals? I have shocking skin and it gives excellent but very natural looking coverage.

Redkeyboard · 27/10/2018 23:18

Sorry just seen others suggested it!

Destinesia · 28/10/2018 09:58

I've used DW for years, the bottle is almost empty now and I won't be re-purchasing as it just doesn't look right anymore.

There are 2 foundations I want to try; Clinique Even Better Glow (there's a 10 day sample voucher on their website) and IT Cosmetics CC Cream (which I'll get from QVC and send back if its not right)

TwoGinScentedTears · 28/10/2018 10:08

I used to wear the YSL foundation (dry ish skin, like full coverage foundation) but had to stop because I just couldn't afford it. It was the very best foundation I've ever used.

I've been through so many since, and the revolution stick foundation is my new favourite. It doesn't actually compare the the YSL, which applied effortlessly was dewy and lasted all day but it's good enough for now!

Beautifullymixed · 28/10/2018 10:50

TwoGin I'm awaiting my Revolution stick foundation to arrive, and also the new liquid foundation too.
The reviews are insane!

My skin is oily yet dehydrated, and I'm thinking that the stick will be brilliant for dry skin days, or extra coverage on top of the liquid foundation (for acne scars on cheek area).

I also love my maybelline fit me dewy foundation, and that mixes beautifully with any foundations that are a tad drying.

The prices are awesome for these foundations, because I refuse to pay top brand prices.
I also love maybelline fit concealer for £5, and Innisfree no sebum powder for £5 to set it afterwards.

I treated myself last month to Too faced peach perfect loose setting powder for £20, and it was no better than the Innisfree, Etude house zero sebum powder, or RCMA no colour powder - my top three powders.

No way am I being swayed by this thread to spend out unnecessarily - I shall be firm!! Grin

Owllwo · 28/10/2018 11:43

Grin sorry beautifullymixed.

I may as well add YSL to the list. Is it the All Hours or touché eclat le teint? Both seem to be full coverage.

For some reason I’ve never got on with Bobbi brown products in general, I ordered their concealer and foundation plus a few other bits and wasn’t at all impressed. The same for Charlotte Tilbury’s foundation, I thought that was awful. I do love her creams and primers though.
