Giving up on Double Wear

Owllwo · 26/10/2018 10:15

I’ve worn it for many years but earlier this year it started to look terrible on my skin, despite nothing in my routine changing. It just kind of sits on top of my skin and clots into small bits, it looks like I have dry flaky skin.

I changed my face wash, moisturiser and primer multiples times, bought new brushes and blenders and tested out applying it at different times but nothing has worked Sad

I’m going to try a new foundation and get a few samples, although that’s always difficult, but was thinking of trying the following:

  1. Fenty
  2. Huda
  3. Make up Forever
  4. Nars Luminous All Day

I need full coverage and don’t like a flat matte finish.

Has anyone tried these foundations? Or moved from ELDW to something better?

I’m going to pop to a mixture of Debenhams/HoF/Selfridges/Harvey Nichols and see if I can get samples but my experience of requesting sample in the past has been tricky. They seem to really hate giving them out.

I use Nars concealer and absolutely love it so I’m hopeful the foundation will take to my skin as well as the concealer does.

I’ll definitely try a sample of Clinique, good to see they have lighter shades available.

I’ll have a look at hourglass too.

The YouTube videos of Huda and Fenty make it look great but then they do use an awful lots of products both before and after applying it so maybe that’s why it doesn’t look chalky on them. I don’t think I can be bothered to apply several layers of highlighter each morning.

Unfortunately I definitely need full coverage all over due to the size of the discolouration patches. I tried the DW light and topped up with concealer but it turned into a bit of a sticky faff.

It’s frustrating because I’ve recommended DW to my friends over the years and they’ve converted and love it still. Not sure why my skin has decided to reject it. Maybe a few months off will do the trick?

I’ve thought of another! Smashbox 24hr foundation is worth a try

ElspethFlashman · 26/10/2018 14:05

I can't get on with it anymore either.

I quite like the Rimmel Lasting Finish with the red top. Good coverage, creamy consistency. Very forgiving.

Max Factor also have a new high coverage one called Radiant Touch or something. It's not actually radiant, but it is satin.

MrsRubyMonday · 26/10/2018 15:32

Try telling the counter that DP is reacting to something in some of your makeup so you're looking for a tester to try out before buying to make sure they aren't allergic to the ingredients as you don't yet know what it is. My little sister is severely asthmatic so I can't use a lot of perfumes or she gets hospitalised, and if I can't get her to come with me I always ask for testers and explain I don't want to cause her any problems and they've always given them to me. It's good because, as it's for someone else, they can't make you try it right there in store, you need to take some away, and they don't usually want to risk someone's health.

Stupid question probably, but if your skin is otherwise good and you are only trying to cover up rosacea and discolouration, have you considered a much fuller coverage concealer on those patches and then a lighter coverage foundation to even everything out? Tarte shape tape is really full coverage and they have free shipping offers regularly, or the dermablend gets rave reviews as full coverage. Just a suggestion, I'm sure you've thought about it already.

stressedwoman · 26/10/2018 17:27

@Owllwo I think they have quite a lot of lighter shades and they seem more natural than the MAC colours it seems. I would really recommend the squalane too. You have to leave it for 10/15 before popping your foundation on and a little goes a long way. I have super sensitive skin and it's never looked better.

Owllwo · 26/10/2018 17:54

Unfortunately the discolouration stretches from under my eyes to my jaw Sad so although the Nars concealer would do the trick, it’s not sustainable to use the tiny stick of concealer all over my face every day.

It’d be great if they brought out a bottle of the stuff Grin

That’s a great idea to bluff about DP having an allergy. I’ve had such trouble getting samples in the past so will try it if there’s any resistance! An EL make up lady in Debenhams flat out refused to give me a sample, said the only way to test it would be to let her apply it to my face and then see if I like it. A Mac person refused to give me the shade I wanted and instead fobbed me off with something that was so dark I can only imagine she was taking the piss.

Huda broke me out. Fenty is SUPER matte.

My holy grail is the BECCA ultimate coverage foundation. It's the only foundation I've ever re-bought repeatedly. It's usually about £34 I think but you can get some good deals on it, it's reduced to £17 in Space NK just now but only in certain colours.

Owllwo · 26/10/2018 18:14

Another one to add to my list Grin thank goodness it’s Christmas soon so I’ll have an excuse to treat myself.

I wear 1n1 in DW and breeze is fine for me in beyond perfecting, linen is a fair shade but slightly more golden toned than breeze.

Jst as another point, both Estée Lauder and Clinique ALWAYS should offer samples of foundation. If the consultant tries to apply all over jst be insistent that you jst want to try at home yourself and wear for a few days, all I would say is be honest when you go to the counter that you really only do want a sample to try that day but you are on the look for a replacement for DW. (I’ve worked for both companiesWink)

whymewhyme · 26/10/2018 19:08

I could of written this post myself only a few months ago! Like u I had used it for years and It was flawless!! Until I caught a glimpse of my self and I looked 10 years older, it dried out my skin and sat in my very fine lines and made me look a bit crap!!! I Tryed every high end foundation going, one day I was sorting my make up and though what a waste it was sitting there unused and then it dawned on me to mix a tiny bit of moisturiser into it!!! It looks great and has the same staying power!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a play about with it and see if it works for you!

spanishwife · 26/10/2018 19:13

Two great alternatives are:

Chanel in small black bottle (velvet something?) Lancome 24hr something something

Not great with the names but you should be able to find from that!

Fullfatlatte · 26/10/2018 20:03

I had quite a large pigmentation patch on the side of my jawline which always went darker in the summer. I started using Indeed Retinol Reface & Glycolic acid pads back in March and they have both helped to fade my discolouration. Might be worth trying (if you haven’t already), just make sure you use spf.

I have just tried Becca First light primer as I read great reviews on here about it. My skin loved it so I bought the full size. I also tried a sample of their Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation (similar to Chanel’s again loved it so got a full size. I’m new to the Becca brand but impressed so far. I’m also the same as a few other posters in that I concentrate more on skincare & found that I don’t need as much coverage now (still need a good corrector under my eyes though!!)

benderinabun · 26/10/2018 20:13

Weirdly was also going to write a similar post myself today! I have very dry/eczema prone skin and DW has always been my lifesaver. With moisturiser underneath. Now even my cheeks (which traditionally are 'normal/clear') look dry after wearing it for an hour or 2. I've ordered the EL older skin version- futurist- as think maybe it's my skin aging, will let you know how I find it.

ThisMadnessMustStop · 26/10/2018 20:18

I’m on my 4th bottle of Chanel Les Beiges. I love it. It has good coverage and a dewy finish. Also good staying power. Might be worth checking it out if you’re doing the rounds of the cosmetic counters anyway.

Olive122 · 26/10/2018 20:40

Same here Whymewhyme, I find a little bit of moisturiser makes such a difference to preventing it drying and settling in my lines and wrinkles. I also add a little illuminating cream when I want a bit of a glow.

I’ve tried so many other foundations and nothing I’ve found can give me the same coverage and staying power that DW does.

Right now I’m using Filorga Time Flash primer and then adding a small amount of The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors to my DW and it seems to be working for me.

Dacresmallwilly · 26/10/2018 20:43

Double Wear over Frezyderm facial factor 50 works really well for me- prior to discovering this 'undercoat' I was having the same problem- happened when I hit 40-ish so presume it's just as my skin is ageing

LadyOfTheCanyon · 27/10/2018 05:57

Have you tried Kevin Aucoin sensual skin enhancer? You only need a tiny dot of it because it's so pigmented so eve though its expensive, it lasts and lasts. Space NK do it and if you can't get to a store, use Findation.com to match your shade.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 27/10/2018 05:58

Also Marc Jacobs foundation has a similar finish to DW.

MrsSchadenfreude · 27/10/2018 06:35

I’ve just started using Bare Minerals Bare Pro. People have commented on how good my skin looks. You can build it up where you need more coverage. Ask for a sample, preferably of two quite close colours, as the one I first tried had a strange yellow look to it. The second one was just right though.

MrsMaryMooFace · 27/10/2018 07:04

I found that when I hit 35, foundation started to look awful. I started using a BB cream and save foundation for special occasions, and use it with lots of moisturiser and setting spray!

OrdinaryGirl · 27/10/2018 07:26

I just got a sample of Clinique Beyond Perfecting and am very impressed with it.
Also, re dry bits catching your base, I've found that the Nip-Fab Extreme Night pads help foundation sit better.

Beautifullymixed · 27/10/2018 08:03

I've just purchased the new hyped Revolution conceal and define foundation.
It's on its way from Superdrug, and is £9.
It's supposed to be full coverage, demi matte and the new holy grail.
I'm very excited. Smile

I have been happily wearing either maybelline fit me matte and poreless, or maybelline fit me dewy - or a mix of the two for such a beautiful, skin like finish for a while now, but a clutch of dark acne scarring and rosacea redness had me wishing for more fuller coverage (at least on the cheek/jaw area).

I spent a lazy afternoon on you tube watching tutorial after tutorial, and I can't wait to receive it after such positive reviews.
I don't always go for matte foundations, but if necessary I would change my primer (or apply over a serum), or even add a drop of oil to the foundation. There are ways of helping a matte foundation appear less matte (such as not powdering, or powdering only the t zone).

My skin is oily, yet dehydrated, and can be flaky and dry, plump and hydrated, or rough and irritated due to rosacea.
Usually, it's a mixture of all textures, so I'm a bit of an expert at adapting on the day. Smile

Beautifullymixed · 27/10/2018 08:14

A way of adding more coverage to a less heavy foundation is to add a foundation powder on top.
I have used my maybelline fit me foundations, dotted concealer on the scarring, and set with powder.
I have then gone over with a light dusting of bare minerals powder foundation for extra coverage without the heaviness or cakiness that you would expect from a lot of make up.

It gives a smooth, more polished look, and adds coverage, but I'm excited to receive my new revolution foundation and hopefully get full coverage from that.
I usually go for medium coverage, and to make it more appear more natural, I apply the very least foundation between my eyebrows, on my nose, and around the nose and mouth area.
Literally hardly any in these areas at all.

This would also help the double wear foundation appear more natural too.

My DD22 swears by DW foundation, and I would LOVE to try it, but I'm far too tight to spend that amount of money. Grin

IWouldLikeToKnow · 27/10/2018 08:16

I second Bare Minerals BarePro, but as PP said, make sure to get samples as it does oxidise. Took me a couple of goes to get it right. It is very long lasting. The only long wear I've actually liked. But, don't wear primer with silicone under it. It makes it go a bit funny shortly after application.

Beautifullymixed · 27/10/2018 08:23

Another way to add a bit of moisture/dew or help a matte foundation appear appear less drying is to add a facial mist.

I use pure rosewater, or add toner/essence to water (a few drops of TO marine hyaluronic, Hada labo premium hyaluronic serum, or Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner make the best mix).
A few drops from either or all, depending on what i have at home, and i have an inexpensive facial spray, that adds a non greasy boost of moisture (mac fix+ I'm looking at you for that greasy feel and appearance), and helps any powder used (I love powder) look less powdery and heavy.
