Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

WRT to The Ordinary/Deciem:

Most of us had long since stopped using it, partially due to the inconsistency of formulations and the worrying behaviour of the CEO on Social Media.

Since that compilation, other brands like the Inkey, Revolution Skincare, QRXLabs, and Alex Steinherr x Primark have launched with similar products/concepts.

From the limited experience on here, the Vitamin C 23% and Azelaic Acid from Garden of Wisdom (at Victoria’s Health) is well liked and much preferred over TO versions.

OCTOBER 2018: In other news, we’re two years old this month! We’re so old- Drunk Elephant is finally available in the UK, but all this celebration is probably overshadowed by the fear that our beloved LRP Toleriane Fluide may have been discontinued Sad

I use it under eye and a little around nose. But I wonder if it is me.
Reckon colour stay was perfect and in a similar tube and that melted into my skin. And lasted all day.

Skinfulnappies46 · 04/01/2019 18:44

Love this thread but it is not showing up in my feed any more. Even if I “watch” it. Is anyone else having this problem?

mintmagnummm · 04/01/2019 21:26

Yes I always swap the ham for pepperoni it's a perfect combo isn't it! Sweet and salty mmmm!

Enid woo hoo! I shall look forward to that!! I've been watching a series called 'you' i really like it, have any of you seen it?

EnidButton · 04/01/2019 21:49

Hello Skin 👋🏻

Mint I got to the bit in the first ep where he was er... 'watching' her. Confused Had to go out so no further but hearing good things so I'll go back to it.

EnidButton · 04/01/2019 21:53

Ruth model recommends, has convinced me to try retinol*. It is time! My face needs it.
She's using Drunk Elephant 🐘 which sounds strong. Where should I start please?

Realise this has been discussed a million times before but I always point blank ruled it out because of my mild acne issues which is very much under control now.

(* On her Instagram stories. We're not best mates or anything. Grin)

BabyPigeon83 · 04/01/2019 22:12

Enid I remember that Nadine Baggott has a video where she recommends some retinol products of beginners.

I'm doing ok with 1% but I would not recommend to start with that.
The one I started with is this one:
www.paulaschoice.co.uk/resist-anti-aging-barrier-repair-moisturizer-with-retinol-m7610.html?dwvar_m7610_size=fullsize&cgid=

Retinol is also supposed to help with breakouts.

SallieSallow · 04/01/2019 22:16

I don’t have a feed Skin or if I do then I’ve no idea where to find it Grin I just come to this thread under ‘I’m on’ but I’m not a profilic poster so this is usually the only one that shows up.

Enid A few of us are using pestle & mortar superstar retinol oil, I find it very gentle and quite soothing/moisturising as it’s an oil and have had absolutely no issues or irritation with it. Bit early to see major results but I’m happy with my skin at the moment inspite of all the Christmas over indulgence so going to carry on. The only other retinols I’ve used are The Ordinary (awful) and prescription ones (differin and tret) which I definitely would not recommend to a beginner. Not tried anything from DE but it seems popular/well liked here (and of course it’s part of our brand name now 🐘🐘🐘 Smile) so hopefully someone will be along with more advice/reviews.

Glad I’m not the only one who likes pineapple on a pizza 🍕 sorry I can’t join in the pepperoni love though, can’t stand the stuff.

EnidButton · 04/01/2019 22:55

Brilliant! Thank you both 😘 That's really helpful. I'll have a watch now. I'd forgotten retinol was supposed to help spots, I remember a gp was going to prescribe it for me but then couldn't because we were doing ivf. Actually I suppose we're still ttc, unlikely to happen but I should give that more thought first.

Thanks again, CakeBrew

EnidButton · 04/01/2019 22:58

Talking of Cake, I started doing My Fitness Pal again this week. It makes me eat much healthier when I can see it laid out like that. Had lots of extra veg and hardly any refined sugar. Might have a hot choc tomorrow though. As it's a Saturday. Smile

Pupsiecola · 04/01/2019 23:26

I'm tracking my food this month too Enid.

My MIL bought me a Clarins hand cream for xmas. I used to use it years and years ago. But OMG it's bought up the most horrific reaction on my left hand. Bad eczema: was bleeding the other night (because it was unbearably itchy). I've managed to improve it with steriod cream, ice and antihistamine. Clarins must have changed the formula. It literally can't be anything else.

EnidButton · 05/01/2019 01:04

That sounds awful! I hope it gets better soon. Flowers I wonder what ingredient gave you such a bad reaction.

Pupsiecola · 05/01/2019 09:23

Baby I'm interested in the PC 10% Body Lotion. I wonder if it could be used just as a hand cream? I'm keen to improve the texture of my hands. They're starting to show my 49 years.

mintmagnummm · 05/01/2019 09:23

Enid yes definitely get back to it as it's really good!

My skin doesn't seem to like retinol, I haven't tried the p&m one tho (I did try their eye cream and had terrible reaction)

I used to use fitness pal and found it really helped me but I got frustrated having to list the ingredients in every meal I had or scan barcodes etc. Guessing the amounts too!

BabyPigeon83 · 05/01/2019 10:20

Pupsie Yes you can definitely use it as a hand cream. I use it on the arms and decolletage but you can target any areas. The same goes with the retinol body lotion, which is also meant to improve signs of aging.

botemp · 05/01/2019 10:23

Pupsie, thyroid issues and skin irritability (and dryness) are linked, so that may be at play as well. I remember my mother (HT) suffering with a lot of minor skin ailments that would flare up really severely, definitely worth reading up on further in that regard. I'd be getting some Urea hand cream (Eucerin) for when you're through the worst of it, you can also use cicaplast on open wounds. Any chance it was the Dennis Gross pads as well? IIRC they're like little gloves, so they may have weakened your barrier? I do rate those pads btw, despite the alcohol (it just makes it penetrate more efficiently) but I think they're a bit full on, so more of an emergency standby like a physical scrub, I think for most they're far too strong to use daily.

Enid, I've written a dedicated retinoid buying guide (with products mentioned) linked in the OP. I think you may struggle with some, especially the oil based ones as they often contain some rosemary, etc.

botemp · 05/01/2019 10:36

Pupsie, also meant to ask, I remember you using the Exuviance SPF50 any reason why you stopped beyond the price tag?

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 05/01/2019 11:07

Clarins used to make me terribly itchy (along with decleor, Elemis and liz Earle) but haven’t used anything from them for years. I’d definitely recommend cicaplast Pupsie and hope it clears up soon.

I’m starting calorie counting again on Monday Sad I’m Out-Out tonight for a final fling, still have Christmas chocolate lingering too but will try and finish it off tomorrow.

Pupsiecola · 05/01/2019 11:30

I read that as "I'm out-out for a final fling, still have Christmas lingerie..." Sallie Xmas Blush.

Bo that's a good point re the thyroid. I guess I'm so new to officially having an issue that I hadn't thought of that. Definitely more reading required.

I don't remember trying the Exuviance SPF50. I've googled it and it's not at all familiar.

Does anyone else have recommendations for products that would help hands? The PC is quite expensive and hasn't got great reviews. Happy to give it a try, but equally thought I'd do a shout out in case anyone has anything good to recommend.

Pupsiecola · 05/01/2019 11:33

Actually those reviews of the PC are all positive apart from the people with KP, which I don't have. I'll see what others say, then consider getting one. I have a code.

botemp · 05/01/2019 11:42

Sorry, Pupsie, not Exuviance, Neostrata (same company).

Nothing wrong with eating chocolate in lingerie, though possibly not when out-out...

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 05/01/2019 11:48

Pupsie have you ever tried the body shop hemp hand cream? It's one of my must haves!

Has anyone here used the toleriane ultra and the new formula of the toleriane sensitive fluid to compare the two for me? I'm using the ultra at the mo and am considering getting the sensitive fluid next, it says something about prebiotics 🤔

EnidButton · 05/01/2019 12:49

Thank you bo I'd forgotten that sorry. Will have a read. Flowers

EnidButton · 05/01/2019 12:55

Does the ultra have Shea butter in it Mint? If so, the Sensitive fluide will be much much lighter. Depends what you want from it. I don't find it very nourishing, so looking for something to use at night to help with that, but it is a good basic one particularly for under make up. My skin does seem smoother texture wise, (little bumps on cheeks and forehead), since using it. But seems drier in places sometimes. (not dehydrated). Occasionally tingles/stings ever so slightly on application.
I've never used the ultra one so I can't compare directly.

EnidButton · 05/01/2019 12:58

^I do like it btw, it's brilliant as a base on make up days and I'm repurchasing. Its just that I'm not 100% about it.

mintmagnummm · 05/01/2019 13:43

Enid yes the ultra does have Shea butter which my skin seems to like. I'm using the vitamin c in the morning aswell as spf so thinking whether the lighter formula will be better as the vit c and spf are quite moisturising. I'm using the night version in the pm.
