Who are your style icons? Who are not??

I don’t have many but I love the way Gemma Arterton presents herself. She has got a fabulous figure which helps, but she knows how to show it off in a stylish way.

As an older woman I think Joanna Lumley dresses well. I like the way she moves in clothes, the way she accessorises, she has a bit of swagger. You can tell she used to model, she can still sell the clothes by the way she holds herself and by the way she moves.

I can’t think of any stylish men.....

I don’t think the Mark Wrights of this world have great style. All seems a bit tight (parsnip legs, tight sleeves). Not the TOWIE look, or the Kardashians.

My style icons are anyone effortless & artfully dishevelled undone. Caroline de Maigret, Kate Moss, Clemence Poesy, Laura Bailey.

I admire women who are perfectly groomed - shiny hair, neat nails and very expensively put together - even though that it isn't my style at all - but they aren't my style icons. For example, Anna Wintour, Audrey Hepburn or Jackie Onassis.

I cannot abide looks that are try-hard or over the top, screaming "designer" items. Kim Kardashian has a knack of making even the most expensive designer items look cheap.

Stylish men: Paul Smith, Paul Weller. Also love Lenny Kravitz' style for it's out there boho vibe.

EdinaMonsoon · 18/09/2018 15:17

"his" not "its" Blush

BitOutOfPractice · 18/09/2018 15:19

Most stylish man on earth: Bryan Ferry

EdinaMonsoon · 18/09/2018 15:21

BitOutOfPractice totally agree. Meant to add him to my list. Effortlessly cool.

BitOutOfPractice · 18/09/2018 15:26

I have been a whole lot tiny bit in love with him for 35+ years now and he still looks incredibly suave and stylish even at 72

Sarcelle · 18/09/2018 15:59

Forgot about Bryan. Saw him at the Palladium earlier this year.He is one cool dude. Still in fine voice too. A lot of the audience, which was mixed in age, had dressed for the occasion too.

I think Marion Cotillard always looks very stylish. I also love her hair and make up (especially on the red carpet).

Again, I agree that the Kardashians, Jenners and TOWIE types are not what I'd call stylish.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 18/09/2018 17:03

I like brigit macron and Jerry hall

quirkychick · 18/09/2018 17:04

I don't know that I think of style icons, as such, but agree with EdinaMonsoons list. I like that artfully dishevelled look too. I would add Emmanuel Alt who has a slight rock chick vibe, Helena Christensen who's a bit boho. I'm sure I'll think of more, yy to Marion Cotillard.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 18/09/2018 17:05

Charlotte Rampling, she looks so cool and sexy, understated and beguiling.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 18/09/2018 17:07

Audrey Hepburn of course.

I still have a selection of quite girly skirts which are known as my "Natasha Bedingfield" skirts. I quite liked her style in the early 2000s.

Pretty much everyone else on the planet is not my style icon.

quirkychick · 18/09/2018 17:15

That should be Emmanuelle Alt, my autocorrect is struggling with names today.

Oh yes, Charlotte Rampling and Jane Birkin (and daughters). Also, Phoebe Philo for understated masculine style.

Floisme · 18/09/2018 17:20

Hell I’d need a whole thread but for starters:
Vivienne Westwood
Katharine Hepburn
Jane Birkin
Patti Smith
Grace Kelly
Cary Grant
Leonard Cohen (in old age)

quirkychick · 18/09/2018 17:41

Patti Smith, yes!

AnnabelleLecter · 18/09/2018 17:57

Rosie Huntington Whiteley is my favourite style icon. Also like Norman Reedus style.

I dislike smart, overdone. I prefer grunge/rock/ casual.

12FreeRangeEggs · 18/09/2018 18:16

Yes! Gemma Arterton has always been my secret style crush. She has a very Parisian take on her style, i’ve been copyng her for years and have always received compliments when i do “GemmaA” outfit

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 18/09/2018 18:39

Kristin Scott-Thomas, classic and elegant

I like SJP in Divorce, but her entire torso is probably the size of one of my thighs so I don't attempt to emulate her.

MargotLovedTom1 · 18/09/2018 18:57

Wish I could though.

Who are your style icons? Who are not??
SinglePringle · 18/09/2018 18:58

Kate Moss in her heyday - less so now for some reason. Preferred her as a grungy druggy!

Judi Dench for an older woman. Ditto Helen Mirren. Both look amazing on the red carpet and I love Judi’s hair.

Marion Coutillard
All French fashion editors
Victoria Beckham - her recent collection is bloody lovely and really wearable (when you break it down)
Jennifer Anniston does the pared down look very well.

Fearne Cotton has a great sense of her own style. She dresses outside the TV Presenter box and it really works on her.

Claudia W always outdresses Tess. Every week. Although Tess has good off duty style.

Many others who’s names will come to me.

Who is not:

Kate Middleton. I hate that boring MOR / Phase 8 / Coast look. Really dislike it. It’s so dull. She dresses like a newsreader on a good budget. Ditto Willoughby (but it’s mainly because she would eat herself if she could. Some of her clothes - since her new stylist - are good).

Katie Price / TOWIE women (on the whole / Danielle Armstrong can sometimes wear nice bits) / Kardashian / Geordie Shore / Love Island types.

RedPencil · 18/09/2018 19:17

Blake Lively, Amal Clooney, the Duchess of Cambridge

LittleWingSoul · 18/09/2018 20:04

Jemima Kirke, although I don't dress like her really I wish I could pull it off.

Ilove80s · 18/09/2018 20:14

I like quirky and fashion forward like Chloe Sevigny and Nicole Richie. Don’t mind Kate Moss.

Not keen on understated dressing like Jennifer Anniston, Angelina Julie and Gwyneth Paltrow. What a waste. They could wear anything!

Agree Helen Mirren always looks fabulous. Her colours are always spot on.

Don’t like perfectly groomed either eg Anna Wintour. I prefer in your face like Donatella Versace!

quirkychick · 18/09/2018 21:14

Tilda Swinton has amazing style, she pulls off that masculine/fashion forward look so well.

I quite like Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow's styles but would mix it with something more dramatic, myself.
