Who are your style icons? Who are not??

I don’t have many but I love the way Gemma Arterton presents herself. She has got a fabulous figure which helps, but she knows how to show it off in a stylish way.

As an older woman I think Joanna Lumley dresses well. I like the way she moves in clothes, the way she accessorises, she has a bit of swagger. You can tell she used to model, she can still sell the clothes by the way she holds herself and by the way she moves.

I can’t think of any stylish men.....

I don’t think the Mark Wrights of this world have great style. All seems a bit tight (parsnip legs, tight sleeves). Not the TOWIE look, or the Kardashians.

Of course SJP had a stylist on SATC it was Patricia Field. Just because someone has a stylist it does not automatically make them stylish, I could write a list as long as my arm of celebs who look a state despite so called professional advice. SJP style is still relevant despite SATC being 20 years old so she has obviously done something right whether she has a stylist now or not. As for looking a state in the 80’s well I think that can be said for a fair few style icons, many peoples looks and style develop from their teenage years....and if you are judging her style from her B movie films, she was playing a character not herself so probably had to wear what the costume department provided.

thornyhousewife · 20/09/2018 16:44

My style icons are Neri Oxman, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Johnny Cash.

My style icons are not Holly Willoughby, Amanda Holden and Victoria Beckham.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 20/09/2018 22:55

Another vote for Charlotte Rampling - who resembles my mother so extra points there! Also thingy who edits French vogue - name escapes me. Classic and classy with a few edgy twists.

As someone who spends my working hours in a uniform I love dressing up outside of work, even if it is just a trip to Tesco.

I find the Duchess of Cambridge's look very dull and ageing.

Amy Lee, I suffer outfit envy on many occasions. She always looks gorgeous while being a bit out there (or a lot out there.)
Cristina Scabbia, she's 46 and still looks incredibly youthful (and has a lovely personality too.) Envy
Then there's Siouxie Sioux, Tarja Turunen, Anette Olsen, Sharon den Adel and Angela Gossow.
Are fictional characters allowed? Because I've loved Morticia Addams look since I was a child, and I've always thought Wednesday was cool.

Men, I went through a grunge/Goth hybrid stage at school, which was inspired by Shaun Morgan. Quite liked Chester Bennington's look in Linkin Park's earlier years, and I like Billie Joe Armstrong, Robert Smith, Ville Valo and Lauri Ylonen.
Also like Severus Snape, although that was partly Alan Rickman's fault as he helped design the costume. I'm still trying to find the perfect coat.

delphguelph · 21/09/2018 01:08

I saw the Calvin klein ad with the kardashians and decided not to ever even entertain the idea of CK. Ugh to the lot of them.

My icons : Diane Lockheart. Hands down her style is spot on what I'd like to look like. She rocks fantastic clothes but with such an edge.

Christie Brinkley looks absolutely incredible but her style is a bit too California for my taste. She has aged terrifically just looks so vibrant and well.

I also loved Robin Wright in House of cards. Scandi low key elegance all the time.

Imoldandlost · 21/09/2018 01:21

I love Jlo. I love her style and while I’m no where near what her body looks like. She’s a short ass like me. So she gets what suits the shorter gal. Her day to day style from I’ve seen is perfect for me.

I also like cate blanchett
Kylie minogue
And Kerry Washington

LunaTheCat · 21/09/2018 09:28

Jeanne Damas, Clemence Posey, Katherine Hepburn, Grace Kelley, Rachel Khoo ( the Little Paris Kitchenj

I dislike Anna Wintour, Kate Middleton - boring outfits, hair too perfect. Neither give anything of their true self away.

silkpyjamasallday · 21/09/2018 09:52

@littlewingsoul a million times yes to Jemima Kirke, I am totally in love with her, I used to rock a similar vibe before I had DD, it feels a tad too outlandish now after two years of machine washable comfies. She's a painter and her portraits are amazing, you should take a look.

GraceMarks · 21/09/2018 10:00

I really admire the way Gemma Whelan dresses - individual without being affectedly quirky or over-polished. I agree with OP about Gemma Arterton too. Basically, it's all about the Gemmas!

I find royal style really dull and think the Duchess of Cambridge could do so much more with herself. She has a great figure and yet she dresses in things my 70+ year old mum would consider to be a bit ageing.

MrsCar · 21/09/2018 20:11

I love Reese Witherspoon, Holly Willoughby, Kate Middleton (casual, not royal engagement) Kate Moss,

Dislike: Victoria Beckham the past few years, Kim K, Kate Middleton royal engagement outfits

3moons · 21/09/2018 21:59

Brigitte Macron

Mrskeats · 21/09/2018 22:01

I like Olivia Palermo

Amaaboutthis · 22/09/2018 17:26

I agree with most of the above.

I can’t bear the WAG TOWIE look and I think VB is spectacularly unstylish. Her look is so contrived that she chooses a look, milks it for a few months and moves on to the next one. It’s too planned and not effortless or instinctive

Cocolepew · 22/09/2018 17:31

Debbie Harry, Michelle Williams, Ewan McGregor.

Artofpretending · 22/09/2018 18:19

Just thought of someone whose style I don’t get - Adele. She generally looks fab ie hair and make up but I don’t like the 70s style maxi dresses covering her whole body. Not flattering on anyone.

mimibunz · 22/09/2018 18:23

Inez de la Fressange and Carolyn Kennedy. And Alexander Kraft is perfect, even more so than Bryan Ferry!

itchybumhole · 22/09/2018 20:44

Agree that Gwen Stefani has great style. She's definitely 'out there', but in a good way.

I love Rachel Weiss. She always looks elegant and classy.

LavenderHills · 23/09/2018 04:09

Francesca Amfitheatrof! She makes me wish I was dark and mysterious instead of a flaming redhead...

The trash heap from fraggle rock.

heattreated · 23/09/2018 09:31

i actually love VB for that very reason Amaabout, she's always been about trends and moving forward. i dont think she's breaking any new ground but she does sleek/clean lines very well.

horseymchorseface · 23/09/2018 11:57

I loved Sharon Horgan's style in catastrophe, I loved the way she wore clashing prints, textures & I adored the amazing colour palate. However, It helps when u have an amazing figure to carry it all offSmile
I admire anyone's style that is unique to them & has not been taken directly from the high st.
I am not fond of Kate & Pippa Middleton's, Meghan markle's Rachel Zoe's & kate winslet's style(ists). I on the other hand have an innate, amazing sense of style & always look & feel incredibly chic from head to toe said no women ever😃

Amaaboutthis · 23/09/2018 16:44

I agree what she wears is often lovely but I don’t think that she has an instinctive sense of style. She doesn’t dress appropriately for the occasion and never appears comfortable in her outfits. She doesn’t seem to be the kind of person who can just pull on an outfit and carry it off. I feel that she sits down with a stylist and puts together outfits and then wears them. The clothes wear her, she doesn’t wear them, I actually like a lot of her clothes, the tailoring is beautiful and I have a few pieces but somehow the effect to me isn’t effortless natural style

TeaAddict235 · 23/09/2018 20:51

@penisbeakers !!! You made me burst outloud and I'm meant to be hiding in the passage way from the toddler who is refusing to sleep. But yes I agree, some of us might have style icons and still end up dressing like a pile of waste

Mine: Lisa Bonet, Jennifer Anniston in Along came Polly, Aaliyah (in her leather trouser phase), Amerie ( the physique of a goddess),

NOT: anyone on Itv, BBC, or love Island, Big Brother, etc wish someone would cover up willoughboughy's 2 melons

Thirtyrock39 · 23/09/2018 21:37

Jane Fonda in grace and frankie

heattreated · 23/09/2018 22:09

you don't like her style but have purchased VB's items, Amma? just being, curious - what did you buy and where do you wear it?

Her items are what i'd wear if i wasn't a real, normal person who worked in an admin role, does school run and lazes around on the sofa at 3pm on a saturday afternoon with a family bag of buttons. totally wouldnt suit my lifestyle but i like the over sized look she has been flogging. Grin
