I'm not sure how many will be that interested really though.

I'd personally like to discuss (apart from drooling over lovely clothes) why some of the biggest goth/alternative/rocker brands create clothes only dolls could wear when the older alternative etc people (us) are the ones with the money to actually spend the prices they charge!

I'm a wannabe alternative fashionista. Admire the clothes, buy the odd thing but never brave enough to wear them!

Ooh, this is the ideal thread for me! Sometimes I see things and think "am I to old to get away with that" but cant seem to find anything in middle ground. Or I see someone with something perfect but can't find it despite ages googling 😞

Me! I've got a job interview next week for a lecturer post and just in case I get the job I've been eyeing up Tattopani dresses that I will wear with Fly London calf length boots. I'm a para boots and army surplus type but as I'm getting older (nearly 40) I'm drawn to Lagenlook and colourful dresses.

I need this thread. I have no idea what to wear now, mid-40s, that acknowledges my former style. I was kind of 'different' right up to my early 30s, then I had two kids, put on a fair bit of weight, got trapped in 'mum' clothes for a while, but as 50 approaches I'm feel an itch to return to a hint of my former self.

Where do people buy interesting/alternative clothes in decent quality fabrics that suit those of us who no longer have the 'clothes horse' frame of our earlier years? Jumble-sale chic was fine when I was young enough to look good in a bin liner, but I have no idea even which brands are out there or where to buy them

duvetdaysgone I get the googling thing. Usually seasonally i'll try and find the same thing I've wanted for years, then suddenly it will become fashionable and expensive! And by the way, you are never too old.

HippyChickMama I'd never heard of Tattopani until you posted, but have spotted some gorgeous stripy pumps on there i've fallen in love with!

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst I completely lost my identity when I had kids and ended up in the mum uniform, too! I look at places like Joanie clothing and other vintage type places but mostly I just look out for hidden gems in high street shops and accessorise them.

Anyone follow any bloggers or instagrammers? I've just started flowing Noelle Dowling on Instagam who is pretty inspirational.

I need this thread! I’m 50, a goth and nothing mainstream really suits me. I wear leggings and dresses or skinny jeans and tops and I just want something nice that doesn’t make me look like I’m 65. I shall fall on any suggestions 🙂

35 and been 'alternative' since my late teens. it just suits me in a way that 'normal' high street fair just doesn't. I wear a lot of a specific lindy bop dress in different colours, mostly aiming for the darker black/reds/purples and I also have a large collection of graphic/comic/funny sloagn print tees, qwertee, teeturtle and teefury being the main places i get my tees. I am always in either converse or dr martens as I have bad legs and my feet often drag so i need hardwearing heavy shoes to account for that and they are the best ive found, ive had at least one pair of each ont he go since i was able to afford to buy my own shoes!!!

eBay is my favourite haunt 😉 for tracking down lovely velvet things for the winter

I never feel myself if I don't have any lace, leather or fishnet on. Or a combo of them all Possibly wear too much red lipstick, definitely too much eyeliner!

Im a size 4 and often struggle with shopping so ideas from here would be great!!

Since having my son I just wear what fits :( but I have dressed alternativly since a teen.

I have been eyeing up some black skinny jeans from EMP with nice distressing for the winter. only just discovered EMP and love the selection.

I followed a great blog called sophistique noir but it seems to have dissapeared although she is still on instergram (which I don't use). I loved her work outfits.

I need a whole wardrobe update really but also need to loose weight so its not really happening :(

I've been looking at EMP but i'm an odd sort of size, well not odd but i'm different sizes in different shops so i'm never sure what to buy if it's a new place i haven't bought from before.

I went to america this spring/summer and made great use of the hot topic shops while i was out there! came back with loads of stuff i just can't get here for the same prices and love every bit of it!

I like an alternative style I've started to shop at toonzshop it's France based but postage is only €6 to UK. Bugger to return stiff though and the sizes are weird. Bought a dress from there in large and it came to my waist! But then bought an large jumper and it drowned me. If anyone knows any websites similar I'd be grateful :D

EMP appear to have a good returns policy although not actually tried it yet but yes i alway worry buying online without being able to try.

Dunno if I’d really class my style as alternative anymore but have started making most of my clothes and it’s really satisfying having stuff that fits in fabrics I like.

I seemed to be in mum uniform too. I hated it.

I'm mostly in a denim skirt, leggings, Converse, vegan DMs and plain black tees lately which is me trying not to be as uniform but not having the energy or budget to go wild. And a New Model Army or Levellers hoody!

Is this essentially a goth thread? I have nothing against goths but I like looking different or alternative but still fashionable not goth/emo.

alternative spans many different looks elledorado i wouldn't say this an exclusively goth thread, you can wear high fashion and still look alternative, for me it's less what you wear, more how you wear it. A lot of my wardrobe IS high street based but i pick carefully to suit the look i like so still somewhat in fashion but with my own twist. I used to be heavily into the goth look but i've calmed that down a lot though it lingers still and although i still wear a lot of dark colours, my wardrobe is no longer exclusively lace, velvet and leather

I think 'alternative' is quite a wide umbrella really. I go for a kind of casual goth look and very rarelly wear all black. Most my clothes are from high street shops I just style them in a 'goth' way.

For me I love interesting cut outs, lace, studs, all the little details and don't really follow mainstream fashion as such but even alternative brands seem to pick up on current trends.

I've become so out of touch with anything non child related I am struggling to think who my 'style icons' would be :/ I need to be taking time out to reconnect with my hobies and intrests rather than just working and looking after a todler but thats a whole other thread _
