I actually think it's bordering on massively insensitive to wear a full black outfit to a function with very unwell children. I just don't get the thought process there. Also don't like the outfit in general though I agree that bootcuts are seemingly in fashion again.

Re. the KM Botox/fillers, I don't think she's had any. The photos in the post above are just very different expressions (true laughter v functional smile) and different lightning and make up. But I'm no expert...

keiratwiceknightly · 04/09/2018 21:02

I like the hair - and let's not forget that Afro hair is not smoothed/sleeked like Eurasian hair so is likely to look untidy compared to KMs. The suit is excellent but perhaps a bit sombre as pps have suggested.

QueenOfTheAndals · 04/09/2018 21:26

There's a lot of history behind black women being told their hair is messy or unprofessional, just because it doesn't conform to white standards of what is acceptable. Perhaps Meghan's deliberately countenancing this by making the "messy bun" her signature 'do.

As a parent of a child who is very similar to those kids I don't really think it's inappropriate. I think she looks lovely. Very evening chic. I'd just be glad they were there being supportive.

Clionba · 04/09/2018 21:29

I wonder if she'd ever let it be natural again? She gets those Brazilian blow dries and the Redken straightening.

dinosaurkisses · 04/09/2018 21:35

How would one let it go natural again after a straightening treatment?

Would the texture of all your hair change as the treatment wore off, or would it be like hair dye where your roots would look different to the rest?

QueenOfTheAndals · 04/09/2018 21:37

With permanent straightening you have to grow it out, with Brazilian blow dries the effect diminishes over time.

I don’t mind the trouser suit but I think some jewellery would have livened it up a bit. Leti would have worn some gorgeous drop earrings or similar and really lifted the outfit.

Clionba · 04/09/2018 22:35

Yes, a stunning pair of earrings. Maybe some bright shoes or clutch.

mathanxiety · 05/09/2018 01:50

I think the black suit was a great idea as it allowed the lovely dresses and suits of the children and their chaperones to shine. Clearly they all went to considerable effort. I think she allowed the children to be the stars.

In the US, black isn't considered funereal (and women wear far less frumpy outfits to weddings, including chic black outfits, than the British UC do).

Bootcuts are on the way back, you say??!! [good, finally, and thanks]

Quantumblue · 05/09/2018 01:53

I liked the suit but I think some brightness somewhere would have been nice, and I find the hanging down tendrils of hair annoying.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/09/2018 06:04

Great link from @Queen for the Well Child awards.
I do think she was trying not to outshine the children. The trousers made her legs look so long.
I guess I am so used to seeing photos of Diana with children, looking so colourful and natural.
The real star is Harry; he is a brilliant patron and so engaged with the children. He really is his mother’s son.

neffall · 05/09/2018 06:21

But isn't Black As Funeral Attire slipping from favour? Everything seems to be "Wear bright colours to celebrate their life" at the moment.

Let's see if she wears black again. Diana got her knuckles rapped straightaway and never wore black again until she was divorced.

megletthesecond · 05/09/2018 06:56

I agree with math , I think she didn't want to outshine the children.

Clionba · 05/09/2018 06:57

I thought Harry engaged really well with the children (not that Meghan didn't!) - he is a natural.

Not sure who rapped her knuckles, but Diana certainly wore black during her marriage - the famous dance with John Travolta was one time.

I am loving this thread.
I don't think black is the no, no we think it is. Kate has worn black to evening events several times.
I may be wrong but I always thought the John Travolta dress was a deep blue velvet number.
I love the way Megan dresses, very chic.

dinosaurkisses · 05/09/2018 11:24

I think when Meghan dresses in black tailoring she looks like herself- it’s very obviously “her” style, even if it gets a bit dull to look at from a commentary perspective.

When she dresses more “royal” - in particular I’m thinking of that pale pink boat neck number she wore a few days after the wedding, she looks like she’s wearing someone else’s clothes.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/09/2018 14:29

Tomorrow's event is a concert marking the centenary of the end of WWI so I'm afraid it may mean more black!

Kudos to Harry and Meghan on how engaged they were with the kids at the awards last night. I don't think it's possible to fake that sort of engagement, and they both looked very natural and relaxed. Harry is apparently no intellectual but I think he's inherited his mother's emotional intelligence and empathy. He certainly looks more comfortable meeting people than his brother does.

OP posts:
Jackietheduck · 05/09/2018 15:55

It isn’t hard to look more comfortable than William in fairness. He appears so unenthusiastic and like everything is beneath him. I think he comes across as very very privileged and very very spoilt.

Like a PP, I think Meghan is retaining her own look and style. I wonder also if she is deliberately going to wear a certain style and certain colours so her public appearances will become more about her as an intelligent person with something to say rather than a clothes horse. She is a woman in her own right with plenty of life experiences behind her. She will not simply fall in with the majority of the female members of the RF. At least I hope not.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/09/2018 16:57

William and Kate always seem a bit stiff when they're interviewed or meeting people, and her accent sounds very unnatural and forced.

OP posts:
megletthesecond · 05/09/2018 17:16

I don't know about William. I wonder if he suffers from depression and is more introverted.

beanaseireann · 05/09/2018 17:33

QueenoftheAndals
I agree re Kate's accent - I think it's put on - she sounds posher than William and Harry.
I don't buy it- it's very affected- her mother grew up in a council house to my knowledge and she's (Kate) posher sounding than the 2 Royals whose mother and father were aristocrats.
Carole Middleton sounded quite posh when interviewed.
Granny Goldsmith was called 'The Duchess' because she had notions apparently.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree- Smile
It's a pity she didn't live to see her granddaughter marry Prince William.

Jackietheduck · 05/09/2018 17:45

I remember reading some report where Kate’s old school friends said her accent changed in secondary school and got posher and posher. I don’t think Pippa speaks in the same accent which says everything really.

Neffall · 05/09/2018 18:19

Apparently they were known as The Wysteria Sisters.
