The sunshine might be fading from our passion fruit punch but we're looking forward to what autumn will bring.

Placemarking. Went to Italy, went to hospital (boo) - all fine now - got promoted (yay) and as a result haven't had much chance to properly check in over the last few months.

I bought some shoes from Bobbies (see pic) a few days ago and thought of you lot. Needed a pair of tan courts but none of the ones I saw looked quite right (too tall, too short, not pointed enough). Usually a 39.5 but no half sizes so went for a 40 and am keeping fingers crossed they work.

As for tweed, I live in this Sands and Hall cape in the spring/autumn months. Agree with Flo and others that sometimes the cut can be a bit old-school on tweed but it's a fabric that I find it difficult not to rush towards whenever I spy it in a shop or market.

That cape is lovely Gah, for autumn you've now gone from La Bellucci to Lauren Bacall in my mind. Let's just pretend you dyed your hair blonde and got a very stylish dog Wink

Jon, Sandro definitely runs small, even the French staff always complain about how tiny it all is.

I think grey can actually be quite refreshing in a palette of camel, rose, and rusts, provided the undertones work with each other like in the collage pic. Going a little too warm can look a bit OTT like in pic 3, granted it's from a Japanese editorial and they always dress western women a bit like Disney princesses in clothes that tend to be more flattering to Asian body types, but my point still stands.

Thanks for the observer article, I had missed it actually, the Guardian app has been really shit lately. Also off to look for the Cos top worn with those trousers, I tried it on in camel last year, which was the wrong camel for me and wanted it in black but it never came into stock and I quite like the idea of grey ever since unearthing the grey bag from the archives.

I'm also pondering paisley after browsing the Brora scarves. They used to be worn a lot with heritage fabrics here, my mother had a few nice very vibrant coloured ones that I may still have kept. It also reminded me that when I was last wearing tweeds it was combined with fake fur. That would feel dated to me now but I am wondering where the fur is with all the seventies revival stuff. Maybe it's too early in the season, I'm still in the market for a fun coat, a short faux fur 70s coat may be just the thing, it never really worked with my proportions previously but maybe I'm now just small enough to be able to carry the extra mass.

I like the tie round the trousers, bo. The trousers are gorgeous.

JonSnow both those trousers look good, I agree that the second pair might give you cold ankles in winter, unless they go well with boots, hard to tell from the picture.

On curly hair, mine is definitely affected by hormones, as I had wavy hair until I was 14 or 15, when I developed corkscrewy curls, just as I was trying to straighten it. It went wavy again with my first pg (so much easier to manage) back to curly and then super unruly curly in second pg. At which point I discovered the curly girl method, but it took a while to work. I've sort of followed it and then my hair went really dry with perimenopause and bleaching it in order to grow out the dye. I've just been watching a video on YouTube by Audrey a la Mode about managing hair, and actually did a hair porosity test, but think I might need to redo it when it's freshly washed. According to that video I have the curly whirly hair type Grin. Not so corkscrewy as it was.

quirkychick · 27/08/2018 09:18

Oh, yes, grey and browns/camels look great. I find caramel toned browns to warm on me but would pair a dark brown with grey.

I used to wear a faux fur scarf with my green tweed jacket, actually, bo, you've just reminded me. I hadn't thought of Paisley. I think last year, I wore either fine woven scarves or chunky knit ones with it.

quirkychick · 27/08/2018 11:05

I have just dug out my (old) green tweed jacket and in fact, remembered I used to wear it with paisley print cotton bandana/scarves, like this. Apologies for bad lighting, gloomy here today.

I will shut up now, as I seem to be the only one posting on the thread.

/scoots up to quirkychick

bo and quirky got there first, but my thoughts were the same JonSnow. A neutral/warm grey paired with your autumn colours would look fabulous. Charcoal and dove grey with tan/ochre/rust etc are among my favourite combinations.

Lovely cape, Gah. I’ll look up the brand. I am in the same corner as you, Flo and others with a soft spot for tweed.

bo, would a paisley scarf in an expensive fabric not read like the look you termed rich bitch ? Mind you I don’t recall any that would have struck me so from the Brora site. They have some frumpy cuts among their clothes, but oh such gorgeous colours... and a great eye for putting different colours together.

Very kind of you to think about scarves to go with my coat. Attaching photos, including a snip of it (and my hair colour) in action, where it seems to have a slightly different, almost green undertone. The real colour is somewhere in between.

Don't run scared, quirky, I always like that you have hidden corners of your wardrobe to pull things from too. Green tweed jacket looks great, can't really make our the paisley but I'll take your word for it.

Apparently those hair porosity tests aren't that reliable. Curly girl method never worked for me, I just don't have enough hair for it and it just looked grim and no will to wait for better times. I am testing new things though at the moment, a shampoo for men with clay in it seems most promising at the moment. I just need something that makes it less dry looking without weighing it down, preferably without silicones as I get build-up with that.

I am curious about the hormones and curly hair thing, mine are all over the place so I can't really track it properly (though I do recognise Peregrane's incessant biscuit eating as either high levels of oestrogen or progesterone) but did you carry the same sex child during both pregnancies although I assume it just is really random?

OP posts:
Peregrane · 27/08/2018 13:31

Oh and I want to look like the top left of your middle picture, bo! Would you remember where those clothes are from? (not as if I could probably afford them as it’s a runway shot.)

Peregrane · 27/08/2018 13:37

I’ll shut up soon, I promise :) but I’ve just remembered that I wanted to mention the longhaircommunity forum as a superb resource for hair care for all types. Mine is pretty straight so I don’t remember what they recommended specifically for curlies, the advice would differ depending on the thickness of your hair too. That is where I first read, years ago, about the rosemary and ACV rinse that bo has mentioned before.

botemp · 27/08/2018 13:39

Are the inside sleeves and buttons of the Fold coat, navy, Peregrane? Could be nice to get a scarf with a bit of inare shine to it (PSA: say no to lurex, kids Wink) in a similar dark navy.

I'm not sure if paisley would put me in ritch bitch territory, think there's more a risk of ageing me. Ritch bitch territory for me is more like an oligarch's accessory rather than old money. The Brora scarves with paisley are a lot more coarse, the ones my mother had were very fine woven ones with a far/middle East vibe with punchy colours peeping through, I'd really have to see what they look like on. I'm not even that convinced they'd suit me but you never know.

OP posts:
botemp · 27/08/2018 13:43

Peregrane, top left is Chloe circa early 2000s, the Phoebe Philo days. Sigh.

Will shut up now not for posting too much but for being reminded Phoebe Philo still isn't working anywhere and I start ranting that she needs to be at the helm of a more democraticly accessible brand already...

OP posts:
Peregrane · 27/08/2018 15:04

Thank you bo! Is anybody doing trousers like that now? Especially at democratically accessible brands...

The insides of the sleeves and the buttons are black. I guess the advice still stands that the scarf could pick up that colour (all black would wash out my face.

botemp · 27/08/2018 15:52

Sorry, Peregrane, have to correct myself it's actually 2010 Chloe, which was the brief period Hannah MacGibbon was at helm who was formerly Phoebe Philo's right hand woman at Chloe, so a similar aesthetic. I googled her to see where's she is now as she really laid down the groundwork for that 70s vibe within Chloe. Only found an article on the Gentlewoman on her from a few years ago and was kind of disappointed that she's been a without a design home ever since when she sounds like someone who you really want designing for women (preferably at democratic accessible prices).

thegentlewoman.co.uk/library/hannah-macgibbon

Not sure who is doing that now as most wide legs have been slightly cropped so far which I'm less of a fan of. Needless to say, if I had come across a similar pair I'd have been all over them Blush

Completely understand the hesitance with a black scarf, there's very few who wear one of those well. Is the coat more cool or warm undertoned? The official pictures suggest warm but yours seems to read cool and I've noticed in the last few days that the natural light has definitely started turning cool again which might be affecting the perception of it?

Oooh – Thanks for the heads up on the Antwerp sales dates. Do you think it would be worth trying to go on the Saturday or is it the sort of thing where all the good bargains get snapped up quickly? The tweed blazer looks the part so it’s a shame that the quality was shite. Maybe a fabric that’s a blend would offer the best of both worlds? Jacquemus trousers look great and especially with the tie / belt.

quirkychick A tweed scarf sounds like a good update. Your tweed jacket is lovely.

Floisme Let us know how you get on with the skirt.

ShrodingersMeowth welcome! These threads have definitely helped me break out of my comfort zone a bit and also refine and polish the things in my comfort zone.

Peony I love the rust coloured jacket and the colours of the outfit in general. I’m not so sure about the R&B boots. I think they look a little ubiquitous and agree that the zips may be too much especially when they’re quite shiny.

Banivani I like the idea of doing the heritage fabrics via a man’s blazer. Could that top be described as Frambooze or is my screen misrepresenting it? Lovely jewel-shade in any case!

jonsnow Sandro trousers look great. I’m less keen on the Cos ones because I don’t really like a low waist with a short leg, but that’s just me.

Congratulations on the promotion Gah81Hope that you’re feeling better. The shoes area great colour, hopefully they fit too.

Peregrane Would a winter white scarf work?

I’m been trying to pull out more of my older pieces this week to assess whether they’re still worth keeping. Attached is a 7-year old top worn with Le Grand Pantalons. I think it’s still pretty serviceable. Also attached is a jumpsuit that I wore to work last week (bangles sadly not pictured due to desk clattering issues, but I did put them on for dinner). I really like the neckline of the jumpsuit which is just a shade wider than usual and balances me out nicely I think. It has a fold detail on the top half that you can’t see in the full length picture, but you can in the close-up.

Peregrane, I too want to be the Chloe woman. That is my ultimate style aspiration. (Until next time I see something else to claim. 😚) The trousers are amaaaaazing.

Gah, what a beautiful cape! And congratulations on being promoted! And Bo, the Jacquemus trousers are very lovely indeed.

Elle, the top might indeed be frambooze, because I’m a hypocrite who claims to not be into a colour and then getting it anyway. It’s a dark, deep, jewelly frambooze though. In my defence. Love the neckline on your jumpsuit 👍🏻 one of my favourite styles, so wearable.

I had a flash of genius and inspiration this weekend and bought the kind of metal clips a hairdresser uses to clip sections of hair away to use as bike clips. Wide trousers all the way baby, nothing can stop me now!

Grey is a tricky colour, one of those shades that you can spend forever looking for to get right. I’ve had a few grey items these past few years that have all been wrong. The greys have been cold and flat. They clash with other colours and only work with black or white which is dull and cheap-looking. My fave greys are the natural wool greys or tweed greys, or silvery silk greys (not my colour though sadly). Very rarely I see good greys in anything synthetic.

banivani · 27/08/2018 21:16

Oh and paisley! I love a good old fashioned paisley pattern. I’ve saved a jersey top from approx. three dress sizes ago because the pale paisley pattern is so lovely. About ten years ago I forgot to bid on a beautiful vintage paisley scarf on eBay and I’ve been kicking myself since. It went for a song. There was a beautiful paisley print on one of the Brora ones there. Russian shawls have been quite popular here. I have one but it’s a very classic red that not too keen on. Would like one with a green base. Paisley is too much to hope for!

botemp · 28/08/2018 07:54

Elle, I usually go on a Saturday and it isn't like the racks were empty. I did go on a Thursday last time but it just meant I was standing in line to get in a whole lot more, and then again to fit things. On Saturday it would only be at Dries most likely. Some mark down extra on Saturday supposedly, but I've never seen it, but I've never gone to all the separate sales either. I would say it's doable in one day depending on how much you want to see as they're spread out all over the city and I don't think you've ever been, right? Also at what time you would arrive and depart will make a difference as most close at around 6 or 7.

Love the neckline on that jumpsuit, it's very flattering, I love it for myself too, it's just the right amount on the shoulders but I rarely see it in the shops.

You're so right about synthetics impacting colour perception, Bani. I think the way it interacts with light makes it look really flat and lifeless, and it's especially noticeable in dark colours. It's usually by that dullness that I know something is synthetic before ever touching it.

OP posts:
quirkychick · 28/08/2018 08:11

Well, I've made the mistake of looking at the very gorgeous Brora, Paisley stoles, they do look great with tweed! My jacket (above) is one I wear most years, it's at least 13yrs old, but not proper tweed, in that it's 40% wool and 60% acrylic/polyester, I think. Also, unlined, so not very warm. Which I think comes back to bo's point about fit and traditional, heavy tweed, when I was looking for a tweed jacket at the time, I was prepared to splash out on a more expensive one, but they all looked very frumpy and not very tailored,so I ended up with a "fashion" one, even so till it's lasted well. Anyway, I ended up wearing it yesterday with a small, grey, paisley scarf, pale denim flares and pale grey trainers, trying to dress down the formal tweed and lighten it up as it's still summer-ish.

To answer about curls, both pregnancies were girls, so no difference there, I just think my hair is very susceptible to hormones. I'm not sure about the porosity test, my hair definitely floated (though, maybe I should try again when it's freshly washed, no product) which is supposed to mean low porosity, but it fizzes like mad in humidity and soaks up oil like no one's business, which surely means it's porous Hmm.

Love the cape, Gah and all the other pics. Elle you always look very chic. I agree with flo this thread discusses some very lovely, interesting clothes and how they work on our bodies.

SophieLion · 28/08/2018 17:34

Your hair sounds lovely Bani. Long and straight and thick . Must be very easy and simpleEnvy (that's an envious face!!)

Schrodinger, I think the comments about you looking English were from Bani, not me Smile I like the colour of your hair. Red/auburn is my favourite colour. Sadly I don't think it would suit me otherwise I would colour it in a jiffy.

Bo, will have to investigate about uniqlo delivery once DCs back in school. Running round like a lunatic trying to get all their stuff as they go back next week.
Levi's 501s! Haven't worn them in years. Used to love them. Especially second-hand ones from Camden Market!

I'm not sure I look particularly French either Floisme and Schrodinger. Not quite sure what I look like. Have been mistaken for a Greek many a time (I'm probably morphing into one) and an Italian.

Your top is a lovely colour Bani.

Thanks for all the info on the hair products Xing. I know what you mean about having enough hair products to start selling them Grin Not heard of Mane & Tail but how bizarre it was developed for horses! Mine so was Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream and I use that.

Regarding hormones and hair, I think mine changed a lot after my third pregnancy. It was definitely more frizzy and much harder to manage. Just did my head in really.

Oh
Got to go and didn't manage to read all the posts. Will be back!!

XingMing · 28/08/2018 18:07

Some wonderful pictures posted in the last few days: thanks to all. The Gentlewoman pictures were wonderful, so I've subscribed! And have been inspired to excavate the tropical wool trousers I had made in Singapore 11 years ago to see if they hang like that still. They stopped looking current for a while, but are classic menswear styled, so probably time for another look.

I shall also be bringing out an old tweed jacket from the storage wardrobe. An Irish company, Brien Tucker, which doesn't seem to exist any more. some images

XingMing · 28/08/2018 20:11

Hmmm... bit dodgy, but the pictures are probably pre-social media. I will try to find a good location to do snaps of my jacket, although I think it's cropped a little short to inspire this year. In case it starts an Ebay trawl, the tweed the company used was always very fine (not Harris weight) and quite light and soft. I am remembering the link that was posted on an earlier thread (last autumn) to some rather elegant Scottish tweed jackets. I was tempted at the time.

My much loved Kuhl (American) jean shaped climbing trousers are now not fit for anything more than gardening and dog walking, but I would like to replace them. As no UK stockist has them in their main range any more, I've blind bought some black ones from a previous season in a style I hope works, in an outlet.

XingMing · 28/08/2018 20:13

And, to complete the triptych of posts, I will put my art glass penguin in shot as the colours will be fab with the jacket.

Plumpciousness · 28/08/2018 23:05

There's an article in today's Evening Standard saying the French clothing company Sezane is opening in London.

Of any interest?

www.standard.co.uk/fashion/s-zane-opens-its-first-store-in-london-westbourne-grove-a3921456.html

ToElleWithIt · 29/08/2018 10:56

Plumpciousness That’s exciting. I’m not a Londoner, but would definitely go to a bricks & mortar Sezane if I was in town.

XingMing the jacket sounds great.

I might think about flying in late on Thursday and staying til Saturday morning so I’d really just have a full day on the Friday. The flight times back at the weekend aren’t the best.

A rather niche request, but has anyone seen any nice block heel gold sandals? I am eyeing the attached Marmont style, but I’m not wild about the logo.

Also saw the attached suede shoes on Topshop website and thought they might be nice for work. They come in a vivid pink too which I like.

Looking forward to the pictures, Xing, especially of the penguin. Does he have a name? I'm tempted to suggest Marco Polo as a fellow Venetian with Chinese ties Wink

Thanks, Plump, not in London either but surely of interest to others on here. I thought they weren't opening up until later in the year.

Elle, the only gold sandals I've seen lately probably won't fit the bill. Ehm, they're very very gold, in a 70s porntastic way. Also have a little YSL logo on the heel so probably not much of an improvement. Uterque and Stories usually do have those type of shoes in the collection, not sure if there's any gold among them. Are they for the wedding to go with the green dress?

I'm assuming you've looked at the Brussels airports, but you could consider Eindhoven airport. It's an hour by car and I'd guess about twice that by train to Antwerp. I think Ryanair still flies there for cheap. Friday actually sounds like a good day, not the busiest first day and not as busy as the weekend. If you need hotel recs I'll have to have a think, don't stay there often.

I've been further drooling over the Chloe FW2010 collection and even more pissy that Hannah MacGibbon is a little known name after leaving there. Love this pop of bright denim in between all the camel. Screw the heritage patterns, I want to be head to toe camel. I'll take a pass on the toe...
