The sunshine might be fading from our passion fruit punch but we're looking forward to what autumn will bring.

Hi @Methenyouplus4, I think the blouse is lovely, and agree with you about removing the bow or reducing the size to minimise the weight.

I think the suede skirt would be lovely with a slim fit turtle neck or roll neck. I'd personally go for black, but maybe one of the richer brown / rust colours which are very big this season would match well too?

The MK top would work with black cigarette pants with heels for evening, or black skinnies instead.

I'm no help with the black cashmere though, but commiserate over the shrinking. Cashmere is beautiful but so high maintenance.

Methenyouplus4 · 15/09/2018 23:13

Quirky- apologies! That should have said excuse my ignorance when asking about your dd, not my innocence. Annoying bloody phone.

Falling- Thank you for advice. What colour tights/boots/style of shoe would you put with the suede skirt? A turtleneck would be a nice idea with it.

FallingForRosie · 15/09/2018 23:52

I'd say black opaques and heeled ankle boots.

Personally knee boots feel a bit retro, and I don't think my pasty legs would cope with autumn without tights.

I nipped on to Pinterest and think this would be a lovely combo. Bo has posted some lovely jumpers recently, which might pair nicely.

Forgot to say black boots to go with black tights.

Methenyouplus4 · 16/09/2018 06:44

Thank you falling. I am always put off wearing it due to grubby hands of kids, but was only about £28 in sale (and it's real suede, originally £89) so need to get out of that 'for best mind set, especially as it's a casual skirt!

quirkychick · 16/09/2018 08:49

Methen my dd has Down's Syndrome (DS, should have been capitalised?), so we've pretty much dealt with that since birth, so she's always been that way. Our good news her glue ear is clear this week and she no longer needs a hearing aid Grin.

Lots of lovely clothes, Methen. I love the picture FallingForRosie posted, I went back into tights on Friday and then went back to bare legs yesterday, but the weather seems to be too warm for tights but too chilly for bare legs. The Michael Kors top is lovely, would it work with LL or a slim cut skirt? I agree that the bow is quite big, but would probably need a seamstress' expertise to adjust. Can you spray protector on the suede in the way you can with shoes, I wonder, as I've suede boots that have lasted rain etc. with good protector on them. The suede skirt might look good with burgundy or berry shades too.

FallingForRosie · 16/09/2018 09:32

Ohhh I really like quirkychicks suggestion of burgundy with the skirt.

I absolutely get the saving clothes for best, especially with young children, they seem to ooze stickiness from their pores. However, spending a little time to wear lovely clothes can really lift how you feel, and sod it, at the end of the day they are only clothes and can be cleaned. And that skirt is such a great bargains, it will look fab.

P.s. great news about the hearing aid quirkychick Smile

botemp · 16/09/2018 10:08

Methen, the suede skirt should give you lots of options. It really is a versatile colour, I like it a lot with the colours already mentioned but other hues of blue work really well, like a bright sky blue, denim shirts work really well. Ochre and orange work well too for the full-on seventies feel. For below I'd say ankle boots too, you can also do brown opaques and brown ankle boots if you have them.

Think the Jaeger cashmere knit can work with it too. Have you tried unshrinking it with conditioner already? Not sure what you mean with pockets would be covered, on the trousers or are there pockets on the jumper that I can't see?

Sorry, not a fan of the Micheal Kors, it does feel dated but it's more what it does for you proportionally, maybe it's the bum covering length? It's also somewhat counter to the current silhouettes which are more waist centric and bottom heavy. I'm not sure what I'd pair it with, could you still move your arms if it were tucked in? Possibly some more dramatic wide legs in a heritage fabric in the brown family would work if it could be tucked in?

Is the bow fixed or can you have a play with it? I do like it, but agree the bow needs a bit of altering not to overwhelm you, as for the view in, would a lace camisole work underneath?

Methe, I have that exact cashmere jumper, there are little pockets just above the waistband and it's got 3/4 sleeves?

Strangely enough I always wore mine with a suede skirt, grey not tan though (it's got holes in the elbows now from where I sit at my laptop so it's been relegated to a gardening jumper, shame because I was very fond of it).

ILikeyourHairyHands · 16/09/2018 15:32

Re saving clothes for best, I'd never wear my entire wardrobe if I did that! (I have learnt to wear an apron in the kitchen though after one splash of fat on silk too many).

And it does make you feel great wearing lovely clothes everyday. I have a pathological aversion to 'slobbing around' clothes.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 16/09/2018 15:50

I like Bo's suggestion for a denim shirt with the skirt Methen. I saw a really nice one in Arket the other day here it was sold out in most sizes though which is a bummer as I was up for a bit of dark double denim.

So if anyone's seen similar let me know!

Also am totally dithering about the Marant's Bo, lovely boots and the fit in the 41 seems right and comfortable, I'm just unsure about how much wear I'm going to get out of them. Not entirely sure what they'll work best with.

The velvet jacket I took a punt on though is gorgeous. A definite keeper.

botemp · 16/09/2018 17:42

I think it was the ever judgemental Karl Lagerfeld saying something about wearing leggings is like giving up on life or something? I'm not that extreme but I do think he's a got a point in there somewhere, definitely have an aversion to stained and irreparable clothes hanging around, they just make me sad.

Well it depends, Hairy, did you get those boots as they're actually an addition to your wardrobe or were they a frustrated stopgap buy from lack of eligible candidates in the knee high camp?

I think their wear is limited in a sense but you may have peak times wearing them and be grateful for their existence then. So this mildly warm autumn weather without rain where you'd wear them under a denim skirt or boyfriend jeans but you'd have to put them away as soon as rain and snow sets in but come spring when it's still cool but with enough promising sunshine they'd come out again with lighter denim. If we get a normal summer next year you'd get more wear out of them, but otherwise probably just the limited nice weather periods in early autumn/late spring which is usually when getting dressed gets confusing so in a sense it is nice to have something you know that works.

Possibly they'd work on a crisp winter day when no salt has been thrown about, you could wear them with navy opaques or dark skinnies? They'd be great under those utilitarian jumpsuits with the hems rolled up as well.

As an addition I guess Bo, I think they will find their place. I've a pair of 70 navy woolfords that have to be cracked out yet. Probably with the burgundy leather skirt.

Peregrane · 17/09/2018 05:01

www.wmagazine.com/story/exclusive-daniel-day-lewis-giving-up-acting-phantom-thread Based on this interview, I think we should be offering Daniel Day-Lewis honorary membership of this thread.

Peregrane · 17/09/2018 05:21

Oh yes, quirky, great news about the hearing aid! An aside, I used to read and enjoy Michael Bérubé’s (US academic) blog in part about his son Jamie, who then published a book about his exceptional child with DS. I don’t know how many people it has reached but it must have opened up some eyes.

Methen, that is quite an impressive and strategically placed bow!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 17/09/2018 06:46

Daniel Day Lewis is 60????

We're all old.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 17/09/2018 06:52

Or are we?

Off message but here's my 75 year old father

Climbing on the Apalations.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 17/09/2018 09:53

Right, here's the Marants, leather skirt, navy Wolfords. Think they make my legs look short but I've worn out today. So they're staying.

quirkychick · 17/09/2018 11:03

Dp is a similar age to Daniel Day-Lewis, your dad is cool, Hairy, my dad is a little older but still climbs on the roof to mend it Shock. Much to my mum's displeasure.

How do the Marants look with a different length skirt? Does that make any difference? I do like the leather skirt, though.

Thanks for the kind words about dd2'ss hearing aid, she's always had glue ear with no fluctuations, so to be suddenly clear is great. She's taking awhile to adjust to her new louder surroundings, though...

ILikeyourHairyHands · 17/09/2018 11:55

Not sure Quirky, will try them out.

Great news about your DD. My DD is autistic, it's been gruelling. She was out of school for nearly two years. It took a social services referral and a huge amount of shouting from me to get her the help she needed. She just got her EHCP that takes her through to 25. I have to say it's not what I imagined when I thought about my progeny.

Cest la vie.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 17/09/2018 12:01

That may have sounded a bit wrong. She is the most wonderful person. I adore her more than anything.

It's the old adage, you're only as happy as your least happy child. I worry about her.

quirkychick · 17/09/2018 12:06

Hairy, that must have been tough. Dd2 was only really full-time in school last year when she started at Special School. Mainstream used to send her home regularly until I pointed it out that it's unlawful exclusion.

FallingForRosie · 17/09/2018 13:24

Thanks for the article Peregrane, think I'll have a hunt on Netflix / Amazon to see if Phantom Thread has been released yet.

My MIL used to see Daniel Day Lewis out running a fair bit in Glendalough, not jealous in the slightest. Apparently a very nice man.

ILikeyourHairyHands very impressed with your dad's climbing skills. Lead climbing out doors, very hardcore Shock

Love the boots with the skirt, the little touches like the layered sleeve really pull outfits together and make them look polished.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 17/09/2018 14:06

We can talk about unllaawfiul exclusions.
