Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

By nature stuff is lovely - if you ever see the lemongrass and ginger hand/body wash, buy it! The plumber used my bathroom, and sheepishly asked if he could take a photo of the hand wash as it "smelt proper nice" Grin

TantricTwist · 02/10/2018 23:58

Olli what long staying power lipsticks do you recommend?

TantricTwist · 02/10/2018 23:58

what brand

Ollivander84 · 03/10/2018 00:09

Stila! They don't budge
I've actually just bought the set called "play it cool"

BabyPigeon83 · 03/10/2018 15:04

Has anyone tried the stunna liquid lipsticks from Fenty ? They used to have just one colour, a bold red, but now they added a few more. They are supposed have a very long staying power.

Ollivander84 · 03/10/2018 15:13

I've worn the red at a photo shoot and it seemed to come off really easily

BabyPigeon83 · 03/10/2018 15:23

Oh no 😭 Thanks for the info...
Which Stilla lipsticks are the long lasting ones? The liquid lipsticks I assume ...

Ollivander84 · 03/10/2018 15:24

Yes called stay all day

EnidButton · 03/10/2018 15:56

Thank you Tant I cant use HA but I'll look out for those brands.

TantricTwist · 03/10/2018 17:13

Enid I can't use use HA either in other products but I've always been absolutely fine using these face masks.

Thanks Olli I will definitely check out the Stila stay all day ones, here's hoping they have a colour that suits me.

Ollivander84 · 03/10/2018 17:28

I think patina is the most popular colour. I wear baci a lot but it makes most people look half dead unless they're pale and cool toned!

BabyPigeon83 · 03/10/2018 17:32

Thank you Olli. I had a look on cultbeauty and it seems the lipstick has a sheer version for some of the shades. Is that similar with the original version as staying power but maybe less drying ?

Ollivander84 · 03/10/2018 17:38

I've never tried the sheer ones TBH! Just spotted them now

TantricTwist · 03/10/2018 18:07

Olli Patina is the one I am drawn to the most.

Ollivander84 · 03/10/2018 18:10

It's nice, looks darker on me as I'm so pale!

BabyPigeon83 · 03/10/2018 20:02

I've ordered from amazon the Stila lipstick in "beso". If i like the texure, I will order patina (I also like that one).

Hi everyone,

I'm a fairly long time lurker, but thought fans of the discontinued Toleriane Fluide, might be interested to know that is seems to have a new replacement: www.laroche-posay.com/products-treatments/Toleriane/Toleriane-Sensitive-Fluide-Protective-soothing-moisturiser-p24927.aspx

It's available on Lookfantastic and Escentual, but the ingredients aren't listed on either site.

Looks interesting! What do you all think?

ElspethFlashman · 04/10/2018 16:13

babypigeon take a glance at the blog Atlantic Pacific. Its super luxe so I long ago stopped looking at it, but she wears Beso pretty much 300 days out of 365. It does look perfect on her.

Today I ventured into TKMaxx and there was a ton of Lipstick Queen. I got a Saint lipstick in Deep Red. Seems lovely from my hasty try on once I got home. I don't think I'd pay full price for LQ, as I've heard the staying power isn't great, so I was delighted to get one for 6 quid.

BabyPigeon83 · 04/10/2018 18:01

@ElspethFlashman OMG that girl looks so elegant and fashionable. I'm afraid I live in the land of cotton tunics and black leggings. The lipstick shade does look great on her, I never dreamed to use it day to day, I got it for special occasions. It would be too bold otherwise and honestly I know I can't pull it off :))

@Kokoloco I've linked some body lotions that I use and like some pages ago, but I can link them again. These are all not scented and samples are available. The brand is also available on lookfantastic and feelunique.

There are some options for dry skin from eucerin (10% and 5% urea) avene (cold cream), la roche posay (lipikar I think).

mintmagnummm · 04/10/2018 18:16

I've just bought two Bobbi brown long wear eyeshadow sticks.....

JDSTER · 04/10/2018 18:17

Hi user toleriane fluide isn’t discontinued. I’m a long time fan of it The one you’ve linked is from La Roche.com site and not all products are the same or indeed available in U.K.

I’ve never tried lipstick queen elspeth but intrigued by those blue and green lipsticks they do

botemp · 04/10/2018 18:22

user, I've found the ingredients on the linked page. It looks like the Fluide with Niacinamide in it? I haven't looked at the Fluide inci in quite some time though, maybe it's the same?

Kokoloco, KP is really a trial and error thing. It's a cell turnover issue (basically skin debris getting stuck in pores) so you need some sort of kerolytic (exfoliator). High percentage Urea works well for many, the Eucerin 10% body lotion is good. For some it's AHA acids, specifically lactic, BHA works well for others. Some find Retinol to be the best. It's really individual and sometimes it's a combination of ingredients, eg. Lactic and urea or urea and BHA. Usually whatever you respond well to on your face can give an indication what works well on the body, so oily skin with bacne tends to work better with BHA, drier skin prefers Urea, etc. Vitamin D supplements help as well as does a good intake of Omega 3 through diet (but a good quality supplement is a viable alternative if not achievable through diet).

Sorry forgot who asked about cruelty free cleansers, but it sort of depends how strict you are. Technically something like Superdrug is cruelty free but in all likelihood it will be produced in a factory and/or use base products from companies that will be selling in China, so inevitably your money does move into companies that don't prioritise animal cruelty. It's hard to be completely out of that loop though. I think Pai is a decent cream cleanser and IIRC they produce everything themselves from scratch and take the supply chain very seriously so that would be an authentic cruelty free option that doesn't contain any common irritants. Medik8 also has some good cleansers, they've recently changed the names of them, but it was called gentle something before, they also produce products themselves and don't sell in China are cruelty free, etc. Probably less fastidious about the supply chain than Pai but European suppliers do have to adhere to strict rules WRT animal cruelty. Pai will send free samples, Medik8 has trial sizes but will probably also have samples if asked.
