Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Pupsie I've been to Berkshire and Hampshire. Hampshire was actually nice as I was near the coast, it felt like being abroad with the smell of the sea but Berks (business/industrial park) wasn't pleasant. I have (thankfully) managed to avoid having to go to London.

Pissing it down here today, it's reminded me of how crap British summertime in the north usually is, I want my sunshine back!

Violet18 · 29/07/2018 15:03

@MrsDOnofrio I have used both LRP dermo and Dr Sam's. I prefer Dr Sam's, as my skin feels squeaky clean after using it. The texture is a bit weird (thick gel) but doesn't leave any film. I wash it off with a flannel.

MrsDOnofrio · 29/07/2018 17:22

Thanks Violet. I shall give Dr Sam’s a try then 👍

EnidButton · 29/07/2018 17:22

I don't Sallie, I'm loving the rain atm. Think I might be part frog.
Hampshire sounds really lovely.

I've just repurchased some of my staple products and had forgotten how ridiculously overpriced Emma Hardie balm is. I still bought it, because I can't be doing with trying new ones at the moment, but good grief they're taking the piss.

Ordered Elemis salt glow from All Beauty as it was £13 cheaper than direct. Never used them before so hope they're legit. (Might've asked way back actually...if I did then they were fine.). Also face razors, sorry I mean "brow shapers" like anyone uses them on their brows lrp moisturiser and redken heatcure masks.

I'm making the most of the cool temp and having a bath in Elemis milk bath. Really love this stuff. So soothing. Due on, so my skin is super sensitive. and I'm an achy moany cow

If someone can pop down to the kitchen and fetch me some tortillas up that'd be fab. 😎

Violet what kind of skin do you have? Sorry if I missed you already saying. I'm interested in the new Dr Sam cleanser. The gel texture sounds nice.

TantricTwist · 29/07/2018 20:13

Violet I much prefer Dr Sams cleanser as I never got on with the LRP one.

It has been absolutely boiling down here in the SE on the coast so it's been nice having a bit of rain although it was treacherous driving on the motorway today in it, quite scary actually Shock

Violet18 · 29/07/2018 23:38

@Enid, I have oily, sensitive, spot prone (hormonal, so occasional) skin with large pores. Fine lines starting round my eyes but nowhere else yet. I've got sensitive eyes too...

Originally I didn't think the LRP dermo was leaving a film, but once I used Dr Sam's, I realised it was!

banivani · 30/07/2018 09:26

Thank you Bagel for the GOW tip, but I think I'm quite happy with TO for now (just not with the company haha). It also has the benefit of being more easily available, as it's sold in H&M in my town. Easy availability really trumps a lot of things for me. :)

I wouldn't say I'm happy with my skin, but I had a kind of revelation that it's not as bad as I'm thinking the other week. I took out a little pocket mirror in my office to try and pluck a moustache hair I could feel under the surface Angry and my actual skin is ... ok. It didn't look at all as patchy as it did in my head, and my pores didn't look as big. I often see my skin under harsh fluorescent lighting in bathrooms and it throws off my perception of it for sure.

My big cysts on my left jawline are going, albeit slowly. This is still my biggest problem, that I get these cysts when my period comes.

EnidButton · 30/07/2018 11:24

Violet Sounds similar to me, thanks, I think I'll try it once my lrp gets low. Something is causing congestion so I need to start slowly swopping things out.

SophieLion · 30/07/2018 19:23

" I often see my skin under harsh fluorescent lighting in bathrooms and it throws off my perception of it for sure." Completely agree with you Bani!!

JDSTER · 30/07/2018 20:14

I’ve just been watching Dr Sams morning routine video. It’s fairly lengthy! She’s extremely thorough with her gel cleanser. Also interested to see she uses an AHA in the morning. I certainly won’t be switching to doing that. I’d like to see her go an updated evening routine.

MrsDOnofrio · 30/07/2018 21:11

As an ex-water company employee I’m horrified that she keeps her tap running while massaging her cleanser Hmm. Surprised she doesn’t take products onto her chest. And why doesn’t she look as red as me when I’ve finished exercising

JDSTER · 30/07/2018 22:45

Lots of people commented on the water running MrsD Grin. She does apologise saying she doesn’t usually but distracted by filming. The whole thing is a good advert for her new cleanser of course Wink

SallieSallow · 31/07/2018 19:08

I might try Dr Sam's cleanser when I'm next in the market for one, I have a big LRP toleriane hydrating to use up first though and I'm happy with it but being able to ditch the first cleanse would be a bonus. Is it good at removing eye makeup or do you need a separate eye make up remover? As most of them irritate my eyes.

JDSTER · 31/07/2018 19:21

Dr Sam recommends a separate eye makeup remover although on the video she does take her cleanser just under the eyes

SallieSallow · 31/07/2018 20:47

That's a pain JDSTER as I've never found an eye make remover yet that doesn't sting my eyes. I'll probably just stick with a first oil cleanse followed by the LRP.

Violet18 · 31/07/2018 22:44

Anyone using GOW vitamin C?

Tsmummy08 · 01/08/2018 07:43

Violet Yes mine came last week and I'm pleasantly surprised - I won't say I prefer to DE but it feels much nicer to apply (more serumy) than the Vichy or Active Formulas (who it seems are ceasing trading?) vit Cs. Definitely a thumbs up from me :)

I've also been using the Pestle & Mortar retinoil as an alternative to Retin-a over the summer and it's great, my skin doesn't feel particularly sun senstive as it does when using tret (obvs still using loads of Frezyderm). Thanks to those who recommended that one, Miffy and someone else?

And thanks Bo for the new thread... I've been quiet for a while in Summer mode :)

Pupsiecola · 01/08/2018 07:53

TS tis I who has also been using P&M retinol.

I'm in San Sebastian at the moment. It's stunningly beautiful and the pharmacy shelves are too! Off to Bordeaux tomorrow for a week Smile.

botemp · 01/08/2018 09:23

Since it's now been the first of the month again it’s time for the monthly overviews to get a good idea of what everyone's been using up an trialling and how it's been working for them. I've drawn up a simple format for everyone to use, but it's a guide really no need to adhere to it to the letter Smile.

JUNE & JULY, TRIALS, AND PLANNED PURCHASES

ROUTINE

AM

Biologique Recherche Lait U
Vichy Thermal Water (patted dry)
Granions de Selenium
GOW Vitamin C 23%
Frezyderm Velvet Face SPF50 (tinted version)

PM

DHC Cleansing Oil
LRP Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser
Vichy Thermal Water (patted dry)
Granion de Manganese (on P50 nights, I use this after P50)
Mo-We-Fr Medik8 R-Retinoate and Verso Super Eye Serum
Tu-Th-Sa Biologique Recherche P50
Su If I can be arsed I use up masks/sheetmasks/etc. but realistically, I usually just skip straight to moisturiser
LRP Toleriane Ultra Nuit

Also: not technically skincare but after applying the granion I apply Kruidvat Super Lash Serum to my eyelashes nightly.

Also (II): when it’s over 27 degrees my oil production really ramps up, I tend to use P50 AM and PM on nose and chin, followed by a quick clay mask (the same Vichy one Enid has) after cleansing. I don’t have BHA in my skincare wardrobe anymore, otherwise I’d use that (without the clay mask) but I didn’t have time to get the BHA before going on holiday and this routine actually works just as good.

EMPTIES:

LRP Toleriane Ultra Nuit - now a long time staple had a backup and have RP more

Edenens Cleansing Oil - have RP old standby DHC cleansing oil as it worked out cheaper

Uriage Thermal Water - tried it, didn’t love it as much as the Vichy Thermal Water

Chantecaille Perfecting Eyebrow gel (with hair growth peptides) - this was a bit rubbish as an eyebrow gel but great for growing them. Am looking into a solitary hair growth serum instead at the moment, is it rapidbrow that people on here were using, I think Enid was using it successfully but someone else with sperm brows had limited results?

Avene Extremely Gentle Cleanser - still like this cleanser but haven’t RP yet. May do so again in winter.

Biologique Recherche Creme Masque Vernix (sample) - I was a bit bored with my minimal but effective routine in June so started shopping my sample stash. This is a bit mumbo jumbo skincare as it’s selling itself as one of the few products available that uses amniotic fluid to stimulate the production of that waxy protective layer newborns are born with (vernix). Further inspection revealed the other ingredients are all great barrier restore ingredients (ceramides, lipids, etc.). Does it give you newborn skin, yes but temporarily. It’s a mask but can be used as a night cream, addictive as it was I was tempted to purchase a full size for occasional use, especially in winter but it’s a hefty price tag. I don’t need it but if I’m ever in need of it I know where to get some.

Biologique Recherche P50 - have RP, obvs.

A313 Pommade (2 tubes) - been using this on my body (as suggested by my dermatologist), initially mixed 1:1 with LRP Cicaplast but I found that too heavy so now it’s about 1:2 with Kiehl’s Creme de Corps body lotion. I’ve been really impressed with it, it’s an excellent exfoliator, it’s worked better than anything else for my KP. It’s also helped with elasticity, I physically felt my skin pulling as suddenly there wasn’t as much give. It’s a bit too sun to judge for stretch marks (main reason I’m using it) but going by results so far I’m expecting just by the skin around it improving at the very least the stretch marks will be less noticeable even if they themselves don’t improve much. It’s a lot more gentle than I expected but then again my body skin isn’t as sensitive. It does heat up briefly after being applied but it’s not bothersome. Have RP 6 tubes.

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL:

Granions de Selenium and Manganese (I also have Cuivre, but yet to use). Officially these are homeopathic ampoules that you drink, diluted in a glass of water. They were suggested to me at Joelle Ciocco when I wasn’t all that interested in their products (they contain a lot of irritants for me). You have to get them OTC in the French pharmacies but they’re available online as well and quite affordable (less than 10 euros each for 30 ampoules), they’re just a high dose of the element in purified water, applied like a serum. The Selenium is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. The Manganese and Copper are trace minerals and whilst they have some support behind them as more than just anti-inflammatory agents I’m not crediting them with more than that.

The science behind it is iffy, but I was a touch bored with my routine and when away on holiday almost without actives (bar the P50) and my skin was being a bit annoyed by the heat preceding that already and this all seemed harmless enough. I can definitely vouch for the anti-inflammatory effect, my skin calmed down a lot and it’s very noticeable (my face usually remains a bit red after cleansing for about 30 mins, this takes it down instantly). My skin does appear to be a lot calmer overall and the concept of the ampoules works well in a skincare setting as the actives are suitably high and well preserved for single use and it’s not that different from Serozinc which is just one giant ampoule in a spray can. Incidentally for those with active acne the Zinc and Sulfur granions, known anti acne ingredients, are recced for breakout prone skin.

GOW Vitamin C 23%

Have to say, not that happy with this. Formula is fine (though I’ll switch back to Vichy or Skinceuticals in the winter as I do find the high concentration a touch drying) but the packaging is shit. Had several malfunctions before it finally gave up and broke down completely. To their credit after failing to reply to an email, the live chat on VH was very helpful and sent me a new one within approx. a week (it arrived when on holiday). The new one isn’t that much better though, it works but it squirts out at a ridiculous pressure which usually means I lose about half of it to the mirror Hmm

Biologique Recherche Lait U

They gave me this as a sample when I RP P50, I really enjoyed it, it’s like a nicer version of the LRP Toleriane Dermo cleanser but lighter and without the heaviness but it doesn’t feel strippy either. It’s pricier than LRP but it’s not ludicrously expensive either and you use less of it. Enjoying it so far.

PLANNED PURCHASES:

Just the eyebrow growth serum, would love to hear about Rapidbrow as mentioned above as this has the same peptides as the Chantecaille which did work well for me.

If the heat does continue reaching the high temps again, I may contemplate getting a travel size BHA from Paula’s Choice in.

SPECIAL MENTION:

Kruidvat Super Lash Serum (sorry only available in the Benelux, I think) I mentioned starting this in my last empties. I’m not supposed to be seeing any results yet for another month but at six weeks in my lashes already were noticeably Bambi. They’re also a lot thicker, I’ve stopped using tight liner as it’s just a bit much altogether. Bit scared what they’ll be like at the visible results date.

Also loving the new Dior pump n volume mascara, though it can be a bit Bambi on acid with the above lash results. I need a light hand and then it’s pretty damn perfect, this is the first mascara that I’ve used on its own in a long time (the only other being the Chantecaille Faux Cils mascara), it doesn’t smudge on me, even in 38 degree heat so it’s been very impressive. Thanks, Fools, for egging me on to get it.

The food's amazing in San Sebastian Pupsie, I'm well Envy. Have some Gambas a la plancha in my absence, please (provided you like them). They have a special kind that hardly leaves the area (think they only ever make it to the Rungis market in Paris where they're instantly snapped up by Sushi restaurants and Michelin starred chefs) and they're so delicious.

Ts, I also included the P&M Retinoil in my retinoids guide as a best (budget no object) pick. Never used it myself but I do believe it's one of the better formulated and packaged HPR ones.

Good to hear your skin has been faring well, Violet, thanks for the heads up on the Rosette Ceramide Gel repackaging/reformulation, I'll keep an eye on it as I do like recommending it. The Japanese tend to repackage a lot though, so I'm not too concerned.

PickledHoneybuzzard · 01/08/2018 10:08

Hi Bo lovely to see your monthly round up. I'm sorry you're having packaging problems with the GoW Vit C too, but also sort of pleased it's not just mine. Mine hasn't broken, yet, but feels like it might do and I'm now really fed up with the amount of product wasted with each pump. violet is yours working ok?

Pupsiecola · 01/08/2018 11:43

I'm using the Rapid Brow Bo and am seeing good results. Even my wax/tint lady commented on it and I'd not been banging on about it by any means.

We've just left San Sebastian for Biscarosse where we will spend a week chilling.

Went for a lovely 5k before we left and a dip in the sea with DH and DSs.

I've got a couple of spots. I hope it's not the pink Biore. Could be the LRP spray. Nothing else new. Also left all actives at home.

SophieLion · 01/08/2018 12:28

Bo - may I ask why you haven't progressed to using your retinoid every night? Is it because you want to use other products on the other nights or do you feel you don't need it every night?
And is P50 not a BHA or have I got confused? Or not understood what you meant in your post? thank you.

Enjoy your hols Pupsie! Are you enjoying the hat? that just reminded me that Ive had no response from Global Babes about the carrying bag for the sunhat.Angry Will chase them now....

botemp · 01/08/2018 12:47

I don't really need to use a retinoid every night, Sophie, I'm only using it preventively. I did use it every night for the first 14 days to assess their claims of magic results (which I did see, to an extent) but using it 3x a week has the same effect/maintains those results. When not using it on holidays, the absence was also noticeable. Considering it's €169, I'm also being cheap and making it go further, though I am surprised how long it's lasted so far. I probably just cursed myself and it'll be finished tomorrow Angry

P50 is a PHA (polyhydroxy acid), it does contain a tiny amount of BHA but not enough to be comparable to a standalone 2% BHA. They do different things, BHA is more targeted towards oil control and blackheads.

Thanks, Pupsie. I'm uhming and ahing whether to splash out on the Revita brow version which is twice the money with a proprietary peptide complex or the Rapid brow. I know the Revita lash version is highly rated and considered the best on the market but Rapid brow seems like a solid bet as I know that peptide works for me. Think Lisa Eldridge also rated it a while back.
