Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

thanks everyone, I'll buy it and see if my skin improves. Might as well pick up a matching toner while I'm at it.

mintmagnummm · 30/09/2018 21:40

Fluffy I personally would swerve that cleanser, it's highly fragranced and has questionable preservatives which lots of people have had adverse reactions to. You may be absolutely fine with it but I personally wouldn't take the risk on my skin.

Is this any better?.

Is it really so bad to use oil for both cleanses?.

SallieSallow · 30/09/2018 22:05

Fluffy no I wouldn’t use an oil twice as I think it would clog your pores and cause breakouts, maybe not initially but I don’t think it would be good for your skin in the long term.

Those Superdrug ones do have a lot of ingredients listed but if you don’t have sensitive or reactive skin they might be fine, I can’t remember your skin type though or how reactive you are to things.

Olli your hair looks so gorgeous in that photo.

Sallie my skin is getting very dry after using BHA on evenings I don't apply differin. But I find I need to use it because I want to slough off the dead skin cells. The face mask sheets I mentioned earlier work wonders though to rehydrate afterwards. I do like how my face is less oily from using differin it helps my Nars TM stay on longer.

My Routine is quite simple at the moment but I'm happy with it and the results esp now I've introduced Differin.

fluffy I always use a face wash for my second cleanse.

SallieSallow · 30/09/2018 23:07

Tant I thought my face was going to disintegrate when I tried adding BHA into a routine with differin or tret, even using the BHA once a week and leaving a couple of days gap in between. I might look into sheet masks though as I’ve never tried them, do you have any recommendations?

EnidButton · 01/10/2018 01:00

Tant Which sheet masks are you using for hydration please? I missed that post. A quick look in Boots today didn't come up with much ". Think the change in weather is making a lot of people crave some hydration.

SplatPancake · 01/10/2018 10:28

Hello knowledgeable persons.

I have a quick question about niacinamide, which you may have already answered. I use TO niacinamide + zinc and it has done wonders for my face. As I’m sure you understand I don’t want to repurchase while Brandon Offhisrocker is still in charge.

I think some of you were looking into alternatives - I was just wondering whether you’d trialled any successfully? I think I have about 2 weeks left of current supply, so am in the market for something else.

Thank you!

Tsmummy08 · 01/10/2018 11:19

Splat Garden of wisdom at Victoria Health do a niacinamide serum, which is probably similar to TO. I haven't used this one but have tried some of their other offerings which I've been happy with.

Olli looking lovely :)

Miffy bit envious of your US haul - no trips for anyone I know this year so I'll have to cough up my pennies to Space NK on Wednesday!

Does anyone have a recommendation for an oil from Space NK? I need a replacement cream cleanser and an oil and was thinking of using the Space NK £15 off offer today... They do a Caudalie cream cleanser that will probably be fine but not sure about an oil. I tried the Caudalie C15 a couple of years ago but really didn't enjoy the smell. Any ideas? For ref I'm a crepey 45 year old :)

Reminder for 1/3 off French skincare at escentual. Started today, I've just placed my order

Nadine's skincare serums video, part 2 (includes make up revolution skincare )

ElspethFlashman · 01/10/2018 15:26

Splat I'm using a couple of things fro. Gow. I think either one or even both have niacinimide, but go back a few pages and I mentioned it. So far they're v v v easy to use. Slippery and foolproof. Obvs too soon to notice any difference but I'm pleased with the consistency.

And Victoria Health delivered super quick. Impressed with them.

EnidButton · 01/10/2018 17:20

Thanks Mint

The skin in my nose is peeling off like I've used footner on it. This is an example of why you should take things very slowly and cautiously. If a clay mask can make me she'd like snake just because I used it too often then god knows what acids etc do to those who get carried away buying the top strength straight away. (Thinking of The Ordinary threads when it first launched.)

I've used a gritty scrub (sorry bo!) and an exfoliating mask then layered on two layers of Vichy thermale, a thin layer of cicaplast and a thick visible layer of cicaplast on the very peely bits. Pray for my snout.

Wondering if those of use with SFs actually need some of them. They're gone for the moment but my nose is the Sahara now and dry flakes are more difficult to disguise than a few darker dots. Just a thought.

JDSTER · 01/10/2018 17:28

I think a gritty scub is sometimes required Enid when skin is flaky like that.
I’ll be getting some Vichy clay mask when the current origins one is finished (maybe I’ll just use once a week though Wink)

EnidButton · 01/10/2018 18:00

Think that's wise JD It's actually pretty mild and gentle so it could be other factors contributing. It's a good mask.

SallieSallow · 01/10/2018 18:31

I’ve got a flaky nose too - no idea why as I haven’t used anything new and (unlike some Grin) I have not being over doing the Vichy mask on my snout 🐽 think it must be the change in temp/having heating on again as it’s got very cold here suddenly. I agree that I find SF and oilyness easier to deal with than flaking, it’s one of the reasons I’ve gone back on ret/tret yet. But I want the long term benefits so will have to take the plunge soon.

Splat this is the GOW niacinamide serum, I’m looking into it myself but I use a cerave moisturiser with niacinamide so not sure if I really need it. I didn’t like TO one as found it a bit tacky and did not find it really did anything for me either.

www.victoriahealth.com/product/Niacinamide-Serum/12852

Would be interested in a review if you do decide to try it.

SplatPancake · 02/10/2018 12:01

Thanks all, have ordered the GOW, and will wander into Superdrug this week to see if Revolution version stocked near me for comparison’s sake!

I’ll report back 🔬

JDSTER · 02/10/2018 14:50

Drunk Elephant launches tomorrow at Space NK.

C firma (the Vit C serum) is £80. I’m enjoying using it although I struggle to know whether one particular product makes a difference. For me, it’s a combination of products that seems to make the difference - so I know I want Vit C in my routine but does it have to be Drunk elephant 🤷‍♀️

I’m on bottle one of two so it’ll be a while before I’ll swap it out anyway.

Tsmummy08 · 02/10/2018 16:24

Thanks for that JDSTER - I'll be buying mine tomorrow. I was thinking about £80, I'm pleased it's not more! :)

EnidButton · 02/10/2018 19:35

Just checking in to say the Footner I used on Sunday evening has worked and finished doing its thing already! Shock I only soaked them today for 20mins and it all peeled off in big bits. I'll do another soak tomorrow to get the last very thin bits off the tops and sides but that'll be it. Maybe I used it fairly recently (July I think) there wasn't much to get through. First time I ever used it took 2 weeks from application to finished.

Snout 🐽 much less peely today but still going. Doing the same layering technique as yesterday. Hopefully it'll go in a couple of days.

Remember that thread years ago where someone asked about applying it to their face?! I wonder if they did it. I know there's one where a poster put it in their hands and it was carnage after a couple of days. Think that's still on here somewhere.

SallieSallow · 02/10/2018 19:48

My snout is still a bit peely 🐽

Tant I cant find your post with the sheet mask recommendations if you wouldn’t mind sharing again? Or anyone else who uses them and has any recs Smile

Shock Shock Shock at footner on your face, I’m too scared too use it on my feet. I don’t really have hard skin though that I’ve noticed but as I’m almost always in boots or trainers I don’t usually pay much attention to what my feet. I did have to break out the sandals this summer with the unusually hot weather but I slapped on some tea tree moisturiser at night, painted my toe nails red and called it good.

Connie5858 · 02/10/2018 20:03

After reading about footer on here I tried it. Couple of weeks ago.
Nothing happened for a week and then it started .
I had to miss two yoga classes because my feet looked absolutely ridiculous with all the peeling skin. Never againSmile

EnidButton · 02/10/2018 21:10

Ah I love it Connie Grin Super smooth baby soft feet with very little effort. Makes me feel really groomed. Did you soak them and peel rub the skin? That speeds it up.

Can't believe how fast they've worked this time though. They'd probably work very quickly on you then Sallie. I think the less dry skin there is, the faster they are. Or they've made it stronger recently.

Going to paint my toes tomorrow. Red of course. Smile My fave.

TantricTwist · 02/10/2018 23:29

Hi sorry Enid and Sallie for the late reply, my sheet masks are by 'By Nature' and 'lanocréme' they are pretty much identical. They both include HA, manuka honey and collagen and are both from New Zealand and I bought them in TKMaxx. I leave them on till they start to fall off pretty much, so around half an hour.

TantricTwist · 02/10/2018 23:38

I have the day off tomorrow so I'll hopefully be getting my eyebrows threaded, popping into Space NK to try out Drunk Elephant products and then finding the perfect lippy from MAC for super duper staying power. I really want to find a red that suits my colouring ( haven't found one yet) so I may just probably go for Velvet Teddy or Faux, we'll see. That's if I even have the energy to leave the house.
