Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Enid I think JDSTER uses a BHA face wash (or used to) I'm thinking corsX maybe this one

www.lookfantastic.com/cosrx-salicylic-acid-daily-gentle-cleanser-170g/11540297.html?rctxt=default?rctxt=default

I like really like the Vichy clay mask, it's better than the glamglow one IMO and significantly cheaper.

Koko I've not ordered anything from cocoon centre, hope your stuff arrives soon. If you don't want to re-order the cerave from Amazon I'd go with the one I have. The boots one does have ceramides but they are much further down the ingredients list and it doesn't seem to have niacimide.

Boots

the one I have

I meant to say about ageing, I looked young for my age until after I’d turned 40, started to go really down hill after 45 Sad

But I seem to age in bursts and then don’t change for years - I looked older than my age in teens and early-mid 20s, but barely changed or aged at all from late 20s to 40 when it all seemed to catch up on me, I’ve put weight on too during the last few years which doesn’t help.

I’m late 40s now so hoping I might stand still during my 50s especially now I’m taking care of my skin and using Spf. I do want to/am trying to lose weight but also love sugar Grin and I don’t want to lose too much as I think that can be ageing too once you’re over 40.

EnidButton · 27/09/2018 20:59

Thank you Sallie I'll look at that one now.

I think it's the stress of this year showing a bit. Or perhaps just the way I'm feeling in myself as I don't think it's anything much noticeable to anyone else. We have a mini holiday coming up and I'm looking forward to getting into Autumn so think I'll feel better soon. Smile

Good luck with the healthy eating. 🍏🥥🥦 I'm also trying to eat much more veg etc. I slipped a bit the past few months.

Pupsiecola · 27/09/2018 23:16

Sallie I know what you mean about ageing in bursts. I'm late 40s too; soon to turn 49, which I can't quite believe. Just how the eff?!

I'm hoping too that what I've been doing the last couple of years will go in my favour eventually lol.

Ollivander84 · 27/09/2018 23:21

Best single eyeshadows are makeup geek
Depends whether you want matte or shimmer - homecoming is one of the ones I keep coming back to, it's a slight shimmer
MAC do a gorgeous green one called sumptuous olive that's like a green gold khaki

EnidButton · 27/09/2018 23:37

Sure I've asked before Ollie but what shades would you say for khaki green eyes with a bit of amber around the iris? Hazel basically but turning more green lately and I want to bring that out.

Ollivander84 · 27/09/2018 23:43

My eyes are green and amber, I find bronze/copper colours make them really stand out and also purples. More warm toned I guess so the orange type copper colours? Think shiny penny type!

EnidButton · 28/09/2018 04:13

Thank you! I have a few copper and bronze toned ones, I'll have a play around tomorrow. Not sure I suit much warmer ones but I'll try them and I like the sound of purple shades. There's a Bobbi Brown one that's like a taupey mauve colour that could work.

Biologifemini · 28/09/2018 06:50

Korres khaki olive eyeliner chubby stick and also Clinique khaki quick liner eyeliner (I smudge both) are great for hazel eyes..
I think everyone should wear khaki. Both have a hint of bronze to them. Really flattering colours.
The Korres one is slightly tricky to get hold of in the UK. I think look fantastic sells it. It is more of a shadow stick though.

mintmagnummm · 28/09/2018 07:29

Thanks Olli where sells make up geek? I'll check out that Mac one as that sounds lovely, I also have tiny amber flecks in my eye.

mintmagnummm · 28/09/2018 07:30

Also my eyes look different colours depending on what I'm wearing, sometimes they look blue, sometimes green and sometimes grey

Ollivander84 · 28/09/2018 07:37

Beauty bay Smile their colour swatches on there are rubbish but there's great ones on the makeup geek website and they're broken down into matte/shimmer etc

mintmagnummm · 28/09/2018 08:02

Thanks Olli 😊

Pupsiecola · 28/09/2018 12:06

I have hazel eyes. When I met Bobbi Brown MUA Hannah Martin she suggested I try their Dusty Mauve Long Wear Cream Shadow Stick (I already had 2 shades and knew I liked the product). It really makes my eyes pop; she was spot on. So easy to apply too, and stays put all day.

SallieSallow · 28/09/2018 16:34

Does anyone know what eye shadow shades are recommended for very dark brown eyes?

I always used to go for silvers, blues, bright greens and purples as don’t think anything brown/taupe/bronze/khaki etc really suits me. Unfortunately I don’t think the vibrant shades suit me any more either now I’m older as they are a bit too ‘much’ so I’ve just been sticking to very pale neutrals. I’d like to find something a bit more noticeable for nights out but no idea what would work.

Ollivander84 · 28/09/2018 16:39

What about golds?

Ollivander84 · 28/09/2018 16:47

I think technically plum colours and greens are recommended. You could look at using a (hate the word!) pop of colour on the lid so something like the stila eye toppers
Or even do your lower lash line in a brighter colour
Greens you could tone down by using more muted shades and go for the more plum side of purple

Have a google of makeup geek - take two, venom, dirty martini and ritzy, those kind of greens

For purples - makeup geek prom night, mesmerised and sensuous

SallieSallow · 28/09/2018 17:18

thanks Olli gold might be an option as would be nice for winter/Christmas dos.

I’ll have a look into the others and will also pull out all the palettes I own and see if I already have anything similar - which is likely as I have literally dozens of palettes that I don’t use Blush

EnidButton · 28/09/2018 21:03

Pupsie that's one of the ones I'm looking at! Not keen on the two shadow sticks I already have from other places but BB do a similar shade called Heather in a cream pot and a powder shadow so might have to go to a counter and swatch. Their sticks might be a better formula.

Making a list of shades to check out, thank you everyone. 👀

(The Burberry shadow stick I have is called Dusky Mauve, it's a good colour but dries way too fast and then won't budge so I can't blend it at all. Clumps together in places too. Not sure why Sali H raves about them but maybe it's my technique.)

EnidButton · 28/09/2018 21:39

Ooh the khaki eyeliner looks nice Bio

Trying very hard not to get carried away and buy All The Things. Grin

EnidButton · 28/09/2018 21:42

Mint My friend has blue/grey eyes with a tiny tint of green in them and she uses a slate grey shadow one from Bobbi Brown and layers it over a grey cream pot. That really makes them stand out. There's so many shades of blue though. All bloomin gorgeous.

EnidButton · 28/09/2018 21:46

That didn't work. It's the shade just called "grey"

JDSTER · 28/09/2018 22:14

Enid Sallie is right, I use a daily BHA wash which is great. Cosrx low ph good morning cleanser. It’s not drying at all. I know that neutrogena grapefruit one doesn’t get good reviews. Neutrogena also do a salicylic wash ‘visibly clear’ that’s an amber sort of colour. Not meant to be as drying. Overall I’d recommend the Cosrx
