Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

connie I use Biore brightening makeup milk spf and also have the watery essence. The brightening milk leaves skin with a more matte look, after applying, than the watery essence. I too have used LRP anthelios (the milky one in a square type bottle) and it was disastrous. I was a shiny mess at lunchtime. I do however like LRP anthelios anti shine one. Both photographed are my two HG SPFs for oily skin

Just put my nails in the shot there GrinI just tried the Essie gel polish last night, which is meant to last for 10 days! I’ll see how it lasts but it went on beautifully.

SophieLion · 25/08/2018 11:55

JDSTER, is the Essie gel polish the one with the twisty lid?

Connie5858 · 25/08/2018 12:04

Jdster*
Thankyou
I tried the lrp antheos and it’s really Bobbly even when I pat it then try to put a bit of makeup on.
I much prefer the Biore watery essence but feel a bit shiny.
I will definitely try the milk
Thanks for the suggestion.*

EnidButton · 25/08/2018 13:34

Do you need to use the twisty lidded top coat with it JD or will any do? Looks gorgeous. Love that colour.

So I don't really use much eyeliner, if any, but yesterday I tried out a Rimmel waterproof one and taking my make up off in the evening was carnage. It got me thinking, when recommending cleansers I think I automatically assume the level of make up is about the same as mine or less, full face but nothing waterproof or very heavy, but some people are going to be full contouring and 3 layers of waterproof mascara etc. So I should stop assuming basically and ask more.

I also need to watch Sali H's In The Bathroom with Claudia Winkleman because that's another thing I kept thinking during the 20 minutes it took to get that eyeliner off...how the feck does Claudia W deal with this shit every night?

(If anyone is after a pitch black, soft eyeliner pencil that would last through an apocalypse, it's this one www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0742CVQW4/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_a_it?ref=plSrch&keywords=rimmel+scandaleyes+waterproof+eyeliner+in+black&dpPl=1&dpID=31SboTVHohL&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1535200390&sr=8-1 It is quite soft though, more kohl than pencil.)

SallieSallow · 25/08/2018 14:27

Enid I've cut right back on eyeliner as the flicky/cats eye look I used to for nights out was starting to make me look older, but I've got a Tarte one that I still use for tightlining on my upper lids and it's an absolute beast of a thing to remove. I still only wear it for nights out though as couldn't be bothered with that palaver on a daily basis. I dislike waterproof mascara for the same reason, but I love tubing mascaras as they don't budge all day but come off easily with hot water and a flannel.

botemp · 25/08/2018 15:09

Doesn't SH usually only recommend about 3 things? I was a bit confused that she described the Dr Sam cleanser as glycerin-rich when there's no glycerin in it Confused

Thanks for the chime in, JDSTER Smile

Enid, on the rare occasion I have a lot on my eyes I do the Lisa Eldridge removal trick on them. 3 cotton rounds where you cut one in half then soak them all to the bone with Bioderma micellar, put half moons under the eyelash line, close eyes and place rounds on top and apply light pressure to keep it in place, count to thirty then slowly wriggle from side to side and down. Another swipe over with the back of the pad and that usually gets most of it away, especially if followed by an oil based cleanser.

Ollivander84 · 25/08/2018 15:30

It can be tricky, I wear pencil liner in my waterline and gel liner most days plus 3 eyeshadows or so, lid primer and mascara Blush
And that's a basic look! After photo shoots I sometimes need to cleanse 2/3 times

Ollivander84 · 25/08/2018 15:58

Should have said if I have done a shoot - this usually means I have primer, about three layers of long wear foundation plus powder and setting spray and eye makeup like god knows what Grin
I use an eye makeup remover first and let it sit on for a few minutes. Then a balm cleanser and then a lighter cleanser, final wipe with my kikumasamune toner stuff. Then pray for my skin!

JDSTER · 25/08/2018 16:01

sophie/enid yes twisty lid one and yes I used the twisty lid top coat too. Buy one get one half price in Boots a few weeks ago. I’ll report back on longevity!

I was browsing in Space NK this week. I don’t go in much but so many lovely brands. Some gorgeous lipsticks and glosses etc. I looked at the new mascara from hourglass (recommend by SH last week in fact). Brush looked good, not one of those plastic wands which I’ve decided I don’t like. The assistant said the chantecaille one is lovely and doesn’t dry out but one of them is £62 Shock they do have a cheaper one but still £36. I do recall ?bo mentioning their mascara.

botemp · 25/08/2018 16:10

Ahem, yes, most favourite mascara ever. The £62 one. They indeed don't dry out, but I find most high end ones don't so long as you don't pump them like a madman.

I've been uhming and ahing over ordering the Hourglass mascara one with my Cult Beauty store credit but I'm wondering if it's more hype than anything else. It's just beauty journos and influencers praising it which is part for the course with Hourglass. I do tend to like the mascaras SH likes and they are rather individual.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 25/08/2018 17:23

Thanks for the eye liner tips. I'll let the remover soak a bit longer next time and try the Lisa E trick. I also used a Burberry eyeshadow stick (color an contour) as Sali H has raved about them and the jury is firmly out. Love the color I picked (dusky mauve) but it dragged a bit and I found it hard to blend. Think I need to have a play around with it, I want it to work. Didn't budge or fade at all though so another very long lasting product.

I've seen a couple of reviews about the Hourglass caution mascara that say it flaked after a couple of hours and one that said it kind of faded away. The potential flakiness has put me off. For now at least. Maybe when it's been around slightly longer there'll be more realistic reviews.

SophieLion · 25/08/2018 17:41

I am using the twisty Essie bottle too JDSTER and so far v happy. Been away for 2 weeks (sand, sun and sea and lots of hand washing) and my nails aren't an absolutely catastrophe! Where finger nails are a state it's mainly due to strong mosquito repellant. Think the lady who does my nails uses the twisty top coat too Enid. I don't think a base cost is required.

What tubing mascaras do you all recommend? Not used it before but thinking of trying one out. Thank you!

SophieLion · 25/08/2018 17:47

And for eye make-up remover: years ago a lady at the check-out (till? - I've forgotten the proper English word Blush) with a ridiculous amount of eye make-up on suggested a L'Oreal one which has oil in it (again I'm not sure if oil is the right word in English but the bottle has two layers which mix when you shake it). Anyway took her advice (on the basis that if it got all her make-up off then it must be good Grin) and it's the most effective remover I've come across. Better than the Bioderma micellar - although I've never tried the technique that Bo describes above.

SallieSallow · 25/08/2018 17:51

Sophie I use the DHC tubing mascara, I love it but it's not overly dramatic, it won't give you the full on 'false lash' look. I've also got a trio of eyeko minis, I don't like them as much mainly due to the brushes which are quite bushy & I like a small, skinny brush.

Brandon from Deciem has posted on Facebook 'cocaine is a helluva drug' it's aimed at someone in particular I think but not sure who. I meant to unfollow the Deciem page but think I'll keep it for entertainment value.

botemp · 25/08/2018 17:57

I like Sensai Volumising 38° for a tuberSophie, but would warn most tubers aren't anything special, it's just a good formula for those who are prone to panda eyes. I tend to use a tuber to lock in a normal formula. The Sensai on its own is quite subtle.

What you're describing is a bi-phasal eye makeup remover which is half oil, half micellar and you shake them to use. The one from Lancome is famously good and I quite like the Chanel one (all L'Oréal brands, I think) but a lot of people find the bi-phasal ones irritating . I suspect they're heavy on surfactants and the fragrance probably doesn't help either.

botemp · 25/08/2018 18:02

I had a glance at the Deciem Instagram when first mention of drama was made, Sallie, and did notice there was a weird photo slide show of him and Gill (of Victoria Health) where she looked progressively worse with every picture and drunk or out of it (but probably just photographed at the wrong moment, and looked like someone who didn't particularly enjoy being photographed) and thought that was an odd thing to share Hmm I'm guessing that was the groundwork for that FB comment. Horrid if that's it.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 25/08/2018 18:34

I keep meaning to try tubing mascara over the top of another one as I loved benefit roller lash until it started panda-ing on me.

I don't have Instagram and am a bit useless with twitter so these Brandon things just appear on my Facebook without much context but from what you've said Bo it sounds like the post was aimed at Gill, how horrible Sad He's getting a right slating in the comments though (apart from one superfan defending him) & most were saying they will no longer be using/buying Deciem products so it's just himself he's hurting at the end of the day.

botemp · 25/08/2018 18:42

I'd post screenshots but it really feels wrong to do so. I'm not on Instagram either but can access it on a desktop. It feels really vile and mean spirited if this is the case and I'm so glad I decided well before this not to use any of it anymore but also not to recommend it on here either.

OP posts:
JDSTER · 25/08/2018 23:12

sophie I asked for tubing recommendations on here for tubing mascara, around Christmas time. Clinique flutter to full, I think it’s called, is what I got. I do like it but hate removing it. As bo and sallie said, they’re not particularly dramatic.

SophieLion · 26/08/2018 07:48

Thank you Sallie, JDSTER and Bo. If that's what you all use tubing mascara for (ie as a top coat) then I might re-purchase a product I had years ago: Clarins double-fix mascara. I think it's the same as what I had but mine is so old that all the writing has worn off. It is basically a water-proof coating that goes over your mascara (so perhaps more tricky to remove than tubing mascara from the sounds of things).

Pupsiecola · 26/08/2018 09:03

The best mascara I've ever found is Bobbi Brown's smokey eye. It goes on really well doesn't clump (pet peeve), looks pretty dramatic with one coat and has a short wand would easy to use. On my second bottle.

I had a look at that Deciem IG post Bo. I found it super creepy and very distributing. Sth about the way Brandon is looking straight into the camera in each shot, especially the last shots where he her head is on his torso, and another where he's only just in shot. I actually found it really chilling.

BagelGoesWalking · 26/08/2018 09:29

I felt exactly the same, Pupsie. Being very new to IG, I hadn't realised there was more than one pic to scroll through. Horrible, unprofessional but chilling is definitely the word.

botemp · 26/08/2018 09:32

Sophie, that's the issue I have with waterproof mascaras, when you need a lot of effort and friction to get it off you end up ruining your lashes. I've never used them but mascara bases are a thing as well, the Sensai 38 line has one too but I'm always a little hesitant of more products to do what one is supposed to do.

I hadn't swiped through the entire slideshow before, *Pupsie, by photo 4 I hadn't gotten the gist but that last picture Shock It feels like being exposed to revenge porn. That's a new low and so beyond any normal business conduct. I am surprised that Estée Lauder still hasn't intervened, it's reflecting rather poorly on them too as a major investor. Boycotting them and their brands would be pretty easy for me (just Tom Ford which due to high prices I buy only occasionally), so not much of a sacrifice but I may be inclined to depending how this develops. I'm really tired of this controversy is content nonsense. It was just sad and pathetic before, this is just malicious.

Pupsiecola · 26/08/2018 09:36

CH did an empties video last week and made a comment that's it's important to her nowadays that the brands she uses have decent people behind them; I assume she was talking about Deciem. It may even have been around the time of that photo.

BagelGoesWalking · 26/08/2018 10:41

I'm quite cheered by the fact that a lot of ppl on the Ordinary FB group are looking at alternatives (way before these pics). I noticed that on CH's video and she commented fairly recently (before these pics) on one post about Victoria Health "giving a damn about people" or similar.
