Seeing as the Spencer wedding thread in S&B was so popular, here's a thread to discuss all royal fashion.

(If we could stick to critiquing the clothes rather than the women wearing them then that would be great!)

She could have worn bright blue: Air Force colours.

I really do think she would suit strong colours, maybe she'll let loose a bit more in Ireland (not emerald green tho, purlease!)

Great minds eh Seneca Grin

QueenOfTheAndals · 10/07/2018 15:17

The eye-banging is CONSTANT with those two! Grin

sorry I know I am being dim but what is a coat dress? is it a coat or a dress?

OlennasWimple · 10/07/2018 15:23

Can we go back and talk about gloves? I was thinking about this last night (MM wore gloves to the christening, and it seems to have divided attention)

My DM and my grandmother told me that to be properly dressed for a formal church event, one should wear a modest dress (ie covering shoulders, probably longish sleeves, no cleavage, past the knees), a hat and gloves - in fact, one glove should be worn and one carried (though neither could tell me why). I think I'm correct in saying that glove wearing to church was definitely something done in smart society in parts of the USA, but I'll bow to SenecaFalls and mathanxiety's superior knowledge on that.

My point is that maybe MM is dressing "smartly" as she has been brought up to do?

On wedding cake, fruit cake lasts surprisingly well if it is stored properly (icing etc removed first and wrapped well) and laced with brandy or fruit juice before it is re-iced. We had the top tier of our wedding cake at our DS's christening and you wouldn't have known that it was a two year old cake (I didn't even freeze it, just kept it well wrapped)

QueenOfTheAndals · 10/07/2018 15:29

@petrolpump It's a silhouette that Kate favours - lighter than a coat but heavier than a dress and can be worn both indoors and out.

I am not sure about the gloves Olenna. I do know that back in the day when women did wear hats in the US, gloves were always part of the ensemble. Dressing to that degree of formality in the daytime, for church, weddings, etc. has for the most part diminished considerably, except in African American communities, where there is often an especially high standard in dressing for an occasion.

OlennasWimple · 10/07/2018 15:36

I suppose the question, Seneca is what would Doria have worn to a very formal christening?

Laiste · 10/07/2018 15:39

DH and i put the top tier of our cake safely away to keep for our 1st wedding anniversary. God knows where we put it - we're at year 6 now and have never been able to find it! Grin

WipsGlitter · 10/07/2018 15:53

So does Kate not have a dress on underneath?

OlennasWimple · 10/07/2018 15:57

Proper coat dresses don't have dresses underneath, but there are also lots of longer length jackets worn over dresses - Camilla likes these (she had a floor length version for her wedding to Charles, and often has a knee length version on for smart occasions)

WipsGlitter · 10/07/2018 16:03

I can see now from the pics she has a very light looking dress on underneath.

The church up the road from us which is predominantly (if not entirely) african american has amazing outfits every sunday, not just for occasions. No one would be out of place at a formal royal event - including the children (well Charlotte might be considered a bit casual). Amazing hats, dresses and yes, gloves, even in the summer.

user1457017537 · 10/07/2018 17:10

Yes I always say how amazing the congregations look. The women old and young look beautiful and the children are very smart and well presented.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 10/07/2018 17:12

Meghan’s dress is stunning. However she is definitely out of sync colour wise. Too dark today, too drop yesterday. However the tailoring, proportions and fit of her Dior today and Ralph Lauren yesterday were spot on.
Kate’s dress looked off the peg. Normally her fit is impeccable but the fabric was too lightweight, so looked a bit creased and droopy.

Clionba · 10/07/2018 17:13

Meghan looks absolutely stunning. That is a gorgeous dress. She doesn't often wear skirts that full, but it's very elegant and flattering. The dark navy or black is a bold choice, royal ladies go for summer pastels and I know they tend to reserve black for funerals. Gorgeous though. Camilla looks lovely in white. Kate looks good, but I'm not a fan of those Alexander McQueen pastel coat dresses myself.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 10/07/2018 17:18

Tom and Lorenzo, fashion commentators from the US are usually pretty spot on. here

TSSDNCOP · 10/07/2018 17:18

Given the solemnity of the occasion, I think the navy was a good pick. She looked immaculate and very respectful. As to yesterday’s olive, again I thought that lovely but agree a little dark given the occasion.

She suits that navy/khaki/grey/white palette. I’ve been trying to channel it myself but keep getting diverted.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 10/07/2018 17:24

TLo on the christening outfits

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 10/07/2018 17:34

I’m just quoting Tom & Lorenzo here from their commentary on Meghan’s banana yellow sheath dress the other day.

We’ve read a few fashion writers suggesting that, as someone who used to be a blogger and influencer herself, she’s craftily “dressing for the slideshow.” In other words, knowing that fashion sites tend to put together galleries of one person’s looks, she chose to spend the first few months post-wedding sending out a consistently rendered image that practically begs to be included in a slideshow of images.

So Meghan will have a pretty varied selection of outfits when we look back on her 1st year as duchess. If someone was to do the same for Kate, it would be endless pastel coat dresses and a flowery hat / fascinator.

I am also very surprised the Meghan has worn hardly any British designers. She had a flirt with Burberry, Stella McCartney & does Emilia Wickstead count? (UK based kiwi?).

Now it’s just US and French designers getting the press coverage.

QueenOfTheAndals · 10/07/2018 17:39

Tbh if I had a choice between Dior and Givenchy or Stella and Sarah Burton, I know who I'd prefer...

Meghan Slideshow.

Bearing in mind she only got engaged in November, Meghan has got so polished in 8 short months.

Looking forward to seeing photos from Ireland. They should be landin* anytime soon

Whitesea · 10/07/2018 17:48

First photo when they got off the plane in Dublin. Meghan is wearing green but a beautiful stylish green dress instead of the more obvious green KM would choose. It is lovely though as there is a heatwave, she must be so hot!

As for Kaye being too busy to worry about what she wore today.....seriously? She has so much help!!!! She has people to shop for her, present the dresses to her, everything! All she has to do is give them instructions on what to look for and then choose her favourite. Too busy my foot!!!!!!!

nervousnails · 10/07/2018 17:57

What is MM wearing!!! I am fed up of her plain jane outfits with really mismatched shoes. Sad

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 10/07/2018 18:20

Skirt and jumper. Silhouette is nice but colour reminds me of one of my school uniforms.
