Mother of groom dress; keep or return?

mumblechum0 · 06/04/2018 23:55

Bearing in mind:
Wedding is in a Tipi in a field, so I need to wear wedges which I hate, ergo going for a maxi

I know my arms are massive but I’m working on toning them and losing weight

Wedding will be relatively low key, son is only 23 so loads of young people and not many ppl in hats etc.

So my question really is, is it too evening wear-y? Trying too hard?

Honest answers please, I am happy to return it, wedding isn’t till August
TIA

I think dress 2 is more suitable for the tipi wedding and equally lovely, I would keep both!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 07/04/2018 11:01

What about the shoes? Maybe we can help find wedges you don’t hate!

Atalune · 07/04/2018 11:27

Wedges would ruin that dress it’s much too glam for wedges.

The net a porter dress it heavenly though. Wear that!!

Floisme · 07/04/2018 11:29

I think the first dress looks amazing on you and gives you a great shape. I love the way it fits really well but doesn't cling. I guess it's likely to stand out a bit in the kind of wedding you've described so the thing to consider is whether that bothers you, and maybe whether it would bother your daughter-in-law to be. Is she likely to start a thread in aibu about you for not complying with the dress code? Wink There's also a good chance it'll get trashed so it depends on whether you can afford for it to be a one-off occasion dress.

I think the second dress looks absolutely fine but nothing like as wow! as the first. So again it goes back to how much of an impact you want to make.

My own view is that it's your son's bloody wedding and if you can't get dressed up for that, then when can you? But then I don't know the people concerned.

Amomentofbeauty · 07/04/2018 11:35

I think the green dress is lovely.

The only thing I'd add is that I've been to 2 tipi weddings in August and they were both absolutely freezing. Could you get a fabulous coat just in case?

mumblechum0 · 07/04/2018 11:41

I’ve just come back to this thread and am blown away by how many lovely people have taken the time to help.

Sooo, to answer various questions,

It’s a proper field on a farm. Just portaloos.

I adore my DIL to be and it’s an excellent idea to ask her, though I know she’ll tell me to wear whatever makes me happy.

I love the shape of the net a porter but don’t do patterns, or only very simple ones. Tend to go for simple shapes in jewel colours olouring is dark auburn, green eyes.

V good points about practicalities, have taken on board.

Mother of groom in ankle length grey which she picked up in India.

Thank you all so much, I never go to black tie things any more, dh is retired and I’m semi retired so I’ll never wear the green so will send it back I think and get the back up plus a more boho one ( can I wear boho at 55😂?)

You look crazy hot. Wear it!!!

thethoughtfox · 07/04/2018 11:43

The second dress is a lot more frumpy.

thethoughtfox · 07/04/2018 11:44

Green dresss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mumblechum0 · 07/04/2018 11:46

Oh and bedroom is Graham and Brown Chinoiserie with Laura Ashley dark eau de nil emulsion and gold leaf on the mouldings for those who liked it 😂😂😂

Op, go for it, the green dress is gorgeous! Who cares about practical? Just hoist it up whilst walking across the field, you'll be fine once you're in the tipi. Love it and if you can't go full on glam for your son's wedding, when can you?

mumblechum0 · 07/04/2018 11:47

😂thought fox!

Or could I get the green one taken up to mid calf?

MorningsEleven · 07/04/2018 11:48

I agree the green is stunning on you but backup is more suitable, especially with portaloos.

skippykips · 07/04/2018 11:56

Calpol for no reason is not ok! My DC would not be going there supervised let alone unsupervised.
That is not ok and I wouldn't care who I upset! I would be having some strong words! Yes it is your DPs mum so it makes sense him talking to her. If he didn't I certainly would as it is your child! Just on that point alone! X

ShmooBooMoo · 07/04/2018 12:06

Gorgeous, love the colour and style and it looks wonderful on you. Also, your arms are fine!

ShmooBooMoo · 07/04/2018 12:13

Also, the guff about green! It's just superstitious nonsense! it's a beautiful shade and looks amazing on you!

Notonthestairs · 07/04/2018 12:17

Beautiful dress and looks lovely on you but not right for the occasion - I think a shorter dress in cobalt would be perfect ( but not the one you've shown as I think it's a bit busy - might look better on you though).

goldface · 07/04/2018 12:25

You look fabulous! Both dresses are gorgeous and you could carry anything off x no issue with your arms, they look great.
And I'm def with the others your house, and esp that wallpaper, is beautiful x
Whatever you wear, have a wonderful day x

Talith · 07/04/2018 12:29

Sorry I'm too busy lusting after your house Grin You look lovely and your arms look fine to me. I agree my first thought was "evening dress" so keep it but maybe something less formal for the wedding.

SwedishEdith · 07/04/2018 12:37

The 2nd dress is patterned though. I don't like off the shoulder so don't like that but it may sit you.

The net-a-porta one is gorgeous. And silk.

SwedishEdith · 07/04/2018 12:38

But I've just noticed the price Shock

wizzywig · 07/04/2018 12:42

Oh i dont know! The green dress is stunning! You look amazing! But its a bit formal/ structured for a boho wedding. But the second dress is a bit blah (after seeing how glam you look in the green dress). Im so excited for you. Can you post what you eventually wear? I love a wedding.

RebeccaCloud9 · 07/04/2018 12:48

More house pics needed please!

Glug44 · 07/04/2018 12:50

A lot of Indian weddings happen in tents and tipis. Most are indistinguishable from halls. Depending on budget you can get wooden floors, glass windows, proper toilets, silver service etc. I would check personally if I were you and then decide on the outfit.

3stonedown · 07/04/2018 12:51

I think you look fab but think it might be too formal for that kind of wedding.

P.s you look so young to have a 23 year old!
