Mother of groom dress; keep or return?

mumblechum0 · 06/04/2018 23:55

Bearing in mind:
Wedding is in a Tipi in a field, so I need to wear wedges which I hate, ergo going for a maxi

I know my arms are massive but I’m working on toning them and losing weight

Wedding will be relatively low key, son is only 23 so loads of young people and not many ppl in hats etc.

So my question really is, is it too evening wear-y? Trying too hard?

Honest answers please, I am happy to return it, wedding isn’t till August
TIA

I really like both the dresses OP. (Sorry) if the weather is chilly but not too wet then the long one , with a wrap, will be fine, especially if you get it taken up a little, as you say.
If the weather is glorious go for the short one with bare shoulders. So I say get them both and decide on the day! (or day before)
Your arms look good in the first dress and will definitely look just as good in the second dress too.

halfwitpicker · 07/04/2018 01:49

Green dress is beautiful but might be impractical for a tipi wedding. Definitely don't return it, you look fab. I'm guessing the wedding is in the UK - so it'll either be cracking the flags or raining, I'd worry about being cold all day in that dress tbh.

Love the other dress too.

GeekyWombat · 07/04/2018 02:03

Love the first dress - I’d be tempted to get some funky wellies to go with as a back up for wedges.

allchangenochange · 07/04/2018 02:13

It is a lovely dress and you look great in it, there is no problem with your arms. However it is an evening dress and I think you might struggle in a tipi. I would go for the shorter dress for that event. Hope you enjoy it.

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/04/2018 04:39

You look amazing!!

I would probably go for dress 2 - it's just a bit more field-y wedding-y, though the first dress is lovely.

I think you will nail it in dress 2, though.

Congrats to your son!

As someone that used to organise marquee/tipi weddings, please don’t wear the long dress, I think it will get ruined. It doesn’t have to rain on the day for grass to be wet, it can simply be a heavy dew. You also have to access the site in the first place, and unless it is exceptional weather it gets damn cold after 10pm so think comfort and practicality. I do think the long dress looks fantastic on you, but if you are having lots of photos outside it may be camouflaged by the backdrop. I think the second option is much more practical and very glamorous.

Obviously all this advice depends on the site. If it is a tipi in the immediate grounds of a posh hotel then less of a problem!

wonkylegs · 07/04/2018 08:19

My SILs wedding was on their farm, marquee not tipi but still fields galore and outside portaloos and it was a very dressy affair and as it was bone dry that summer no problems with mud. We had to walk from the church to the farm as well so the whole thing was very outdoorsy.
Lots of people wore the first and second styles you've picked without any problems. The green looks good on you and I'm sure the blue would too.
It's hard to tell because it's such a way off you don't know what the weather and the ground will be like so having 2 options is not a bad idea.

mrsreynolds · 07/04/2018 08:23

It's lovely
And your arms are fine!

MsWinters · 07/04/2018 08:27

Hmmm. I think I need to see photos of the dress in lots of other rooms in your house before I can offer an opinion.

gettingtherequickly · 07/04/2018 08:31

That dress is beautiful, really suits you, please don't send it back. But I wouldn't wear it to a teepee wedding either.

QueenieBuchanan · 07/04/2018 08:35

I like the dress but couldn't wear green as I've always thought it was unlucky, so not suitable for a wedding.

I'd go more Bohoo for a teepee, less evening gown and more funky, especially for a younger crowd.

You've got a fab figure by the way so can wear anything Wine

LadyLapsang · 07/04/2018 08:36

I think the dress looks great on you and you should keep it, but for an evening occasion. What about something like this - www.net-a-porter.com/gb/en/product/1042753/borgo_de_nor/ingrid-ruffled-wrap-effect-printed-silk-crepe-midi-dress BTW, there is nothing wrong with your arms!

SparklyMagpie · 07/04/2018 08:36

It's beautiful as is your wallpaper 😍....and house !!

Tiddlywinks63 · 07/04/2018 08:38

It's a beautiful dress op and I love the second one too.
Just be warned that sitting on straw bales will wreck any clothes made of chiffon or similar material; it catches on the fabric.
We went to a similar wedding and several people were really upset at ruining expensive outfits.
I would make sure anything I was wearing was a close-woven material, or be prepared to bin the dress afterwards.

gettingtherequickly · 07/04/2018 08:49

Love that borgo de nor dress lady linked to!

Qcumber · 07/04/2018 09:19

The dress looks amazing and your house looks beautiful.
Forget about your arms they're not big at all.
I like the back up as well. You'll look great. Enjoy the wedding x

Northernlass99 · 07/04/2018 09:23

Beautiful but completely wrong for tipi wedding. I love the netaporter one lady linked to. I also love wedges.

windchimesabotage · 07/04/2018 09:27

The dress is very beautiful and suits you! The hem may get a bit ruined if it is a 'rustic' wedding but if you dont mind about that then go for it! (I had my wedding in the centre of a forest and still wore a full size traditional wedding dress)
Your arms are in great shape what are you talking about?

PS I also love your wallpaper!

Pixel99 · 07/04/2018 09:35

Love the back up dress. With a shawl, shrug or beautiful cardie for when it gets cold though.

Didiusfalco · 07/04/2018 09:46

I think you should keep the dress because you look gorgeous, but having been to similar weddings I think you would feel overdressed and might be more comfortable in something different.

Didiusfalco · 07/04/2018 09:47

Ooh back up dress is perfect!

ladyratterley · 07/04/2018 09:53

Back up dress! The green one looks fabulous on you but might look a bit “try hard” for the type of wedding.
The back up dress is less formal, will still show off your lovely figure and is gorgeous!
If I’m doubt maybe ask the bride if you have a good relationship with her.
Enjoy OP, it must be a very exciting time for you.

FreshStartToday · 07/04/2018 09:53

Yy to the back up dress for the wedding and keeping the green for an evening event. And Yy to both looking fantastic

Hope you all have a lovely day

BigGreenOlives · 07/04/2018 09:58

RIXO London have some great options, there’s a lovely red maxi (not solid scarlet) that would work on you. Net a Porter & Selfridges, generally under £300.

maggiemuff · 07/04/2018 10:15

I like it, as someone else said though, if it rains you would have to hold it up.

Lovely dress on you though.
