Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

Finally caught up with this thread, it moves fast. Glad to hear mint that things weren't as bad as you first feared.
I haven't tried my LRP Anthelios yet, I figured it was more than enough to introduce the CeraVe and indeed Ha until I see how I get along.
Does anyone use a facial tan? I'm very very pale and I suppose that's not going to change at all during summer with a high spf. I'm wondering what impact Retinol and glycolic acid will have on using a facial tan, will it just take it straight off? I'm considering the drops you add to moisturiser. If my face had colour I could get away with bare face a lot more.

sallie I must check out that cc cream I'd love something really light and natural.

Bo you'll have to take a pic if you make the lamb cake, I'm not sure I'd be able to put a knife into that innocent looking thing though😆

OCSockOrphanage · 30/03/2018 19:57

For Bo, who asked how I was getting on, on another thread. I am five months into using the mini NuFace facial tool. I bought it to alleviate the cat's bum wrinkles around my lips on a special offer.

Given my age (nearer 62 than 61) and with generally clear blemish free skin, after a couple of Botox treatments/consultations for my forehead 11s, my main issue was the bar code above my top lip. Initially, I used it according to the directions, four consecutive days at least, then a two day rest. After a couple of months, it's suggested that you drop back to two/three days per week. Not sure this is the best advice; I notice that maintenance needs to be at the higher end of usage.

I do think it helps smooth out the lines, but I didn't take reference photos so it's hard to prove improvement. There's improvement, or at least a slowing down of the deterioration, I think.

Bo asked if the programme was about endlessly selling the consumables (basically a gel that transmits the vibrations through the skin) and the answer to that is, not really. It comes with a starter tube, but reading the ingredients, I reckon any sensible hyaluronic gel would do, and there are some on Amazon/Ebay at about £17 per 500ml. I have been using a mix of NuFace starter gel and aloe vera to eke it out as I had a bottle but am now out of the NuFace gel so planning to buy generic hyaluronic.

Tant I switched to using NARS radiant finish tinted moisturiser. I’d normally steer clear of anything ‘radiant’ with my oily skin but it’s actually oil free and non comedogenic. It’s a consistent recommendation from Dr Sam and I’m very pleased with it.

mintmagnummm · 30/03/2018 20:19

JDSTER where did you get the nars from and what are the shades like? I'm nw18 in Mac so any suggestions?

Tant I'm still using the ITcosmetics cc cream, I do like it but don't love it. The shade light is too dark for me so I have to blend very well.

cad186 · 30/03/2018 21:03

Tant I recently bought the Bobbi Brown tinted moisturiser but the coverage is very very minimal, definitely not enough for me, so if you want some coverage I would give that one a miss!

JDSTER · 30/03/2018 21:31

mint mac shades don’t mean anything to me. I don’t think there’s a huge range of shades in the tinted moisturiser (you could check on NARS website to get an idea) but I got a good match. I purchased from John Lewis but concessions in lots of dept stores and space NK so you could be matched and try.

mintmagnummm · 30/03/2018 21:45

Thank you JDSTER

Tantpoke · 30/03/2018 22:05

I'm looking at Korean Brand Touch in Sol and their Flawless Skin Top Coat anyone tried these at all, there are only 2 shades.

Jdster I have heard nothing but good things about Nars tinted moisturisers but when I tried out a tester from Space NK of their Sheer glow a good while ago I wasn't that impressed for some reason or other. ( My skin was much worse then though)
I will test out the Radiant Finish tinted one esp as you like it Jdster and Dr Sam has recommended.

mintmagnummm · 31/03/2018 07:42

Ok so I used my avene spf 50 on top of my mineral 89 this morn rather than using my moisturiser aswell and IT BURNED! how odd! It subsided after a while but don't usually have that issue! I'm considering going back to my eucerin spf 50 lotion

mintmagnummm · 31/03/2018 07:42

My skin also feels a little tight

SophieLion · 31/03/2018 08:15

Hi Mint, I often put my Avene SPF directly on top of Mineral 89 when I'm going straight out so not liking loads of stuff in my skin (just did it actually) and have never had any problem with that. I can't remember your skin type I'm afraid but burning sounds very odd.

SophieLion · 31/03/2018 08:16

Piling (not liking)

Lonesurvivor · 31/03/2018 08:24

Is it a new bottle mint?

I've given myself shouty claps this morningdeserved a slap across the face really I realised I've bought skin and not face LRP. I've no explanation why or how I didn't realise until today. I'll take it back later, at least it wasn't open.

mintmagnummm · 31/03/2018 09:31

It is odd Sophie but my skin is odd 🙄. Highly reactive, dehydrated and combination. I have lots of issues with my skin.

Lone yes pretty new, I bought it couple months ago.

JDSTER · 31/03/2018 09:40

Tant this is what I use

Thank you Sock Flowers that's what I was mostly interested in, whether results were maintained, and how, and whether results waned with decreased use.

Lone, I'm not sure if I'll get round to making the lamb this weekend. My health is acting up massively Sad Enid, I know you mentioned having low blood pressure issues too, how do you deal with it? It's been a bit simmering for a while, couldn't take baths anymore, etc. but since yesterday it's a full whamy of faintness, blurry vision, lightheadedness, etc. I'll be calling up the GP first thing on Tuesday for some blood tests to make sure it's not my thyroid or something else but in general the low blood pressure thing has always been waived off as aside effect and not to worry too much about it.

Mint, indeed that doesn't sound good, I'm guessing the moisturiser previously acted as a barrier hence you didn't notice the irritation immediately as it does sound that a, or various, chemical filters aren't agreeing with your skin. In that regard it may be worth trying a mineral SPF for a bit, was the Avene Mineral SPF you were looking at previously a nano one by any chance?

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 31/03/2018 10:34

JDSTER could you swatch that colour for me if you don't mind?

Bo yes that's what I was thinking about the barrier. The mineral one was nano is that good? I just bought a eucerin anti age one, it says it's non greasy, easily absorbed and ok for under make up and in hot humid weather. I think it might be new? I'll attach a pic.

mintmagnummm · 31/03/2018 10:36

Pic...

mintmagnummm · 31/03/2018 10:36

Omg my hands always look deformed in pics 🤣

botemp · 31/03/2018 10:38

Well depends who you ask about nano as some go a bit mental about it, but yes, basically nano will be more cosmetically elegant and less clogging. There is a downside that it's not as impressive in blocking UVA rays as non-nano but not enough to get worked up about.

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 31/03/2018 10:56

Thanks bo. I'll try the eucerin one and if no good I'll try the mineral avene.

Does anyone use the it cosmetics cc cream in fair? I'm not sure whether to order this shade next time as the light is a little orange on me but I'm concerned the fair will be too pale 😏

SophieLion · 31/03/2018 12:26

Mint, do you get the same burning feeling if you put the Avene SPF straight on your skin (ie without any serums etc underneath)? It might be the SPF itself causing problems or it might be how the SPF and the serum react together on your skin.

Bo, sorry to hear you are not feeling well. When I have low blood pressure then normally eat salty foods which helps. Doctors here also say to have some orange juice. Anyway fingers crossed for good results from the blood tests and hope you feel better soon ThanksEaster Smile

SophieLion · 31/03/2018 12:32

Do you think you might have low iron too Bo? It doesn't sound pleasant. Poor you Easter SadEaster Sad Hope you can relax and take it easy.

botemp · 31/03/2018 12:33

Thanks Sophie, I've actually been craving salty foods and I tend to listen to my body so good to know it's helpful beyond tackling the nausea. I tend to avoid drinking juices due to the high sugar rush that comes with them, but I can definitely get some oranges in.
