Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

Does anyone rate Clinique TTDO balm?? I need a balm cleanser for my first cleanse to remove make up and spf

mintmagnummm · 29/03/2018 17:12

Actually scrap that I've just remembered I've tried it in the past and loved it at first but then it started to dry my skin out and clog my pores!! Any other balms rated here??

JDSTER · 29/03/2018 19:02

There’s a thread on S&B asking where the ‘crepey’ thread went. Another long running thread like this. Someone said they were outed on Facebook. What does that mean?

EnidButton · 29/03/2018 19:24

My answer on this thread was a bit rubbish so if anyone feels they can help this poster www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/3207895-how-can-i-smooth-forehead?msgid=76721460#76721460

JD Not really sure. Maybe it was on MN Facebook page as discussion of the day or something? Not sure why that would be a problem though so maybe not.

botemp · 29/03/2018 21:16

I don't know what happened to the crepeys, I never knew what they were on about to begin with Confused. It's a bit of a shame MN doesn't do more with the long going threads, I think it's the nicest part of MN. I don't think I would have stuck around without them. Though for whatever reason people like to target them too Hmm so maybe that's what made the crepeys move to a more private sphere?

Zo and Sophie, questions are just as valid an input into this thread. Admittedly I used to get a bit annoyed at people just popping in for random recs or a check my routine thing and then never to hear from these posters again but then I figure there's plenty of people reading along who it will benefit or act as a refresher.

mint, I wouldn't go for a balm but rather an oil. Balms tend to be preferred by drier skin and combo/oily tend to do better with an oil cleanser.

Love this thread!

I’m nearly 25 and have started taking an interest in looking after my skin more. I have always worn spf but I’m starting to develop a routine now, but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for retinol and AHA products? I don’t have sensitive skin, sometimes if I don’t moisturise it can be slightly dry. Sorry if this has been asked before!

TheShaniaTwainExperience · 29/03/2018 21:33

Also I have been using coRX (I think it’s called?) power liquid stuff and I love it so much. I only use it a couple of times a week but I’ve noticed an improvement in the clearness of my skin after about a month

botemp · 29/03/2018 21:47

At nearly 25 realistically there is no need for acid toning or retinol unless you're managing or acne or similar. Save the heavy duty stuff for when you actually need it, focus on moisturising, daily SPF (and reapplying, staying out of the sun, etc.), possibly get a Vit C in your routine if there's need for it at 25+, but honestly your skin is very much self-sufficient at this point and working at optimum levels. Your main concern should be on tackling the influence of external elements (pollution, UV rays, etc.) from a defensive standpoint. If you're prone to blackheads and clogging than a BHA can be helpful in that regard but beyond that, I really don't see the need to go mad with a full-on actives routine.

Bo oh ok thank you. Any oils you can rec that I can buy from boots or Debenhams/house of Fraser beauty counters?

botemp · 29/03/2018 22:24

The only one that comes to mind with those parameters is the Simple one, looks to be on offer at Superdrug but as you know simple can be a complete crap shoot with sensitive skin.

Hi y'all I'm using TTDO and like it- I use it after micellar water. Just got prescribed low dose antibiotics for my Grade 1 roseacea (again) . Have used Nip & Fab extreme glycolic pads on my feet and ingrown hairs on my legs (how charming?) I will not put those near my face again !

TheShaniaTwainExperience · 30/03/2018 00:02

Thank you bo!

I love the information sheets you put at the beginning of the thread, they’re fantastic x

mintmagnummm · 30/03/2018 08:24

Bo is it ok to just put my avene spf on top of the mineral 89 rather than moisturiser aswell? I'm finding it a bit too much with all 3

botemp · 30/03/2018 08:47

Provided it's sunk in that's fine mint, I personally only moisturise in the AM in the depths of winter on very cold wind days, otherwise my SPF usually is moisturising enough for me.

mintmagnummm · 30/03/2018 08:51

Thank you!

JDSTER · 30/03/2018 09:51

Just agreeing mint that serum then SPF is actually a great combo if you don’t need the moisturiser. It’s certainly what I do if I’m on holiday and using a more heavy duty SPF like LRP. I hope everyone has a nice Easter weekend.

SallieSallow · 30/03/2018 13:38

Not fully caught up but just popping in to say hello and mark my place on the new thread - loving the title Grin I'm away at the moment - in the U.K. so still experiencing the delights of the ever changing weather but really enjoying the lighter evenings.

Routine is quite basic at the moment but skin is behaving well, it's always better (less oily) when I'm not at work. And this is definitely the best time of year for me skin wise - not cold enough to make me dry/flakey but not warm enough to make me oily.

I've been paid and need to do a big Easyparapharmacie order, think I'll have to give in and do a deciem order too, though I'll probably try the Vichy 89 as a substitute for hylamide sub q.

JDSTER · 30/03/2018 15:31

What will you buy on easypharmacie Sallie

Tantpoke · 30/03/2018 16:17

Jdster yes I was thinking the same thing re SallieS purchases, do tell

Tantpoke · 30/03/2018 16:24

I know this has been asked a gazillion times but what foundation or tinted moisturiser are you enjoying wearing these days.

Light enough not to look caked on yet enough to cover and even skin tone and not slide off by lunch.

EnidButton · 30/03/2018 17:16

My local largish Boots doesn't have the hand chemistry hand cream in anymore. Dammit. Wish I'd looked last week now.

SallieSallow · 30/03/2018 17:47

Mainly just repurchases on EPP and getting spfs in for summer so nothing too exciting - bioderma spfs, LRP cicaplast (the balm and the anti peeling gel thing), the Vichy deodorant that I really like as doesn't make me itchy, and most likely the Vichy 89 serum. Oh and I need my Eucerin shampoo, scalp tonic and both of the face and body moisturisers that I use.

I think all I really need from deciem is the hand chemistry HA body spray so will try and hold off, I'm ok for the HC hand cream and body oil for now as still working my way through the bargain sets I ordered on Black Friday but didn't arrive till January.

Before I came away I had an unexpected delivery of a Eucerin 10% urea shower oil from Escentual that I had no recollection of ordering. Turned out I had ordered but absolutely months ago before I got the bioderma shower oil, it was out of stock so they waitlisted me and I'd completely forgotten about it. It must be at least 6 months ago, I'd have cancelled if I'd realised Confused

SallieSallow · 30/03/2018 17:50

Tant I use IT cosmetics CC cream and really like it, there's a couple of others here using it too as far as I can remember Miffy loves it like I do but Mint wasn't all that keen, think the colour wasn't great on her.

EnidButton · 30/03/2018 17:51

I didn't know that existed Sallie, sounds good. (The shower oil) Must add it to my list of products to look in to. I have to buy some more toleriane fluid. Hope you're having a nice break.

Tantpoke · 30/03/2018 18:03

Sallie fab I'll give the IT CC cream a try thanks

I've just used my impulse purchase of Mane n Tail shampoo and conditioner and I really like it so far.

I'll have to wait for tomorrow though for the real test - is my hair flat or ok for another day - and see if it compares to Syoss Olio 21 which does pass the test.
