Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

actually its Aspire the A was written in another colour I couldn't see

Ollivander84 · 07/05/2018 20:34

Tested the Frezyderm today by using it as my SPF to ride the horse in the lunchtime sun! No burning, and I used banana boat spray on my body

EnidButton · 07/05/2018 21:53

Yes bo Grin

Of course you are Olli! I know what you sound like then.

TantricTwist · 07/05/2018 22:44

Ooo I like your top Olli very nice

Ollivander84 · 07/05/2018 22:56

Thanks! V old cheap one from yours clothing, I don't tend to wear it much

TantricTwist · 08/05/2018 01:05

I like colourful patterns on a black background

SophieLion · 08/05/2018 07:46

Me too Tant. In general - not just for clothes. Check out Rita Ora's dress from the Met Gala.

Tsmummy08 · 08/05/2018 09:27

Sophie Sorry for the late reply, I've got dry skin and have been using Retin-A for anti-ageing rather than acne so can't comment on your query I'm afraid.... I do notice a few little whiteheads the morning after using it sometimes, which I assume is a little purging but other than the normal flaking/face falling off when I started using it, I've not noticed any issues...

SophieLion · 08/05/2018 09:50

Thanks Tsmummy. What strength are you using and what strength did you start with?
How did you build up your use of it? Sorry, a lot of questions.... curious as my derm is being very cautious with me. I'm not allowed to keep it on all night. Only a few hours in evening.

TantricTwist · 08/05/2018 10:17

Sopjie yes I absolutely love Rita's dress there, I just got caught up in the rabbit hole of looking at all the other dresses, I really like Rosie's dress too.

Tsmummy08 · 08/05/2018 11:49

Sophie I started with 0.05% but had been using OTC retinols like SkinCeuticals etc for years. I found the strong 1% retinols very irritating but haven't experienced the same degree of irritation with retin-A YMMV!

mintmagnummm · 08/05/2018 12:17

According to that cosdna website the frezyderm doesn't offer very high protection from the UVA rays

JDSTER · 08/05/2018 13:41

mint just throwing it in there about frezyderm (makes me feel better Grin)
Seriously, I’m still not feeling the love for it but I’ll try again in autumn.

Geordie shore Grin (never actually watched it). I’m originally from slightly further north so don’t have a Geordie accent but do sound northern!

I’m currently trying to reduce wheat in my diet (I’ve started reading ‘wheat belly’ by American cardiologist). Had yogurt, what free granola and blueberries for breakfast and just enjoyed a red pepper and feta omelette, sat in the garden. I was at the beach at the weekend and I’ve got a triangle of sunburn on my lower shin Shock. I had spf on face, neck and arms but didn’t bother with legs. I was actually sat in a tent most of the time but ankles sticking out so one leg obviously just caught the sun.

botemp · 08/05/2018 14:01

Hate to ruin the Frezyderm bashing but IIRC it has Unival A plus (considered one of the most superior and highly stable) as the UVA protection along with one or two other filters with a lower UVA spectrum, but all together it makes for a comprehensive full spectrum. Or it was Tinsosorb M or S, but the same arguments appy to that.

For summer I'll still switch out to my Japanese old faithful physical-chemical mix SPF as I do like to see Zinc Oxide in there in high amounts along with other superior UVA filters but that's in line with my overcautious approach to SPF. I should really consider moving to a crypt Grin

Cutting out wheat never did much for me, but it's never been a large part of my diet and I eat long fermented stuff so I think that probably makes a difference. I've been aggressively cutting out soy in the past few months as I started noticing a correlation with headaches (and one terrible migraine a few weeks back that was the result from an emergency protein bar that used soy protein but I hadn't paid attention to the ingredients) and that seems to be making a massive improvement.

mintmagnummm · 08/05/2018 14:28

Oh really JDSTER why are u not loving it?
I also try to limit wheat intake (I haven't cut it out but try not to eat too much and have the free from pasta) I find it can trigger my ibs if eaten a lot. That omlette sounds lovely how did u make it??

Bo I've actually heard that soya can be a migraine trigger

SallieSallow · 08/05/2018 19:13

Just catching up - I've decided that I definitely do like frezyderm (now my skin has settled down) so I'm glad it passes the Bo test Grin

My dry skin from last week has gone away and my skin is actually going through a good phase now Confused didn't get a period though still feel one might be looming. And I'm very pleased with the hourglass palette, I think it does make me look fresher and healthier.

No change in my routine since last month (apart from using freezyderm as my spf) but I'll be adding tret starting this week, twice a week mixed with moisturiser and will work up from there very slowly if no reactions. And SPF will be absolutely slathered on, especially if the weather stays sunny though it's back to rain already again here.

I need to lose weight too as I'm a 14-16, I'm tall so not massive at that size but my BMI is in the overweight category and same as you Tant I hate seeing myself in photos Sad I've been trying since January and I do lose a few lbs but then I'll have work travel and/or social stuff on and it's back to square one. I'm a really, really fussy special snowflake eater so I can't do anything too restrictive as I end up with nothing left that I'll actually eat, I just count calories and aim for less crap/more veg.

I'm another Northener, I think I'm not that far away from Enid and Olli (based on our space NK chat!) so we probably sound similar-ish.

TantricTwist · 08/05/2018 19:46

I realised today that if I don't wear moisturiser under my LRP spf helio stuff my Nars TM stays on all day whereas with moisturiser then spf then Nars there is wierdness in texture later on in the day.

Sallie I'm doing quite well so far with the healthy eating plan and exercise, I think its all this sunshine. I'm more of a 16 / 18 at the moment and average height. God knows how that snuck up on me so quickly Shock
I'm enjoying the cross trainer so that's good, went on it again today for 5K (15 mins) was aiming for 10 mins so thats fine by me.

I'm definitely sensitive to wheat so my body likes me eating less of it.

I watched Ian Marber on CH website and bought his book Food Doctor Ultimate diet which is nice to flick through and have to hand esp with regards to portions etc.

TantricTwist · 08/05/2018 19:47

in that I was aiming for 10 mins regardless of distance

SallieSallow · 08/05/2018 20:03

I'm not sensitive to wheat at all, in fact if I cut carbs too much I get a bad stomach, I'm the most contrary person ever when it comes to food and eating. And I'm rubbish with exercise too, I have knee problems which rules out anything high impact but I really need to start walking in the evenings again now we finally have some better weather.

Weight gain does sneak up very fast though doesn't it, I was an 8-10 till I turned 40 and it's been a slow creep ever since Sad

SallieSallow · 08/05/2018 20:05

Which actually doesn't make sense as I'm saying it's fast and slow Grin I think what I'm trying to say is I didn't notice the creep until I got to a certain point, and then it was a massive shock.

mintmagnummm · 08/05/2018 20:48

I'm now debating whether I should give frezyderm another go, may try in morn and if eyes sting again I know for sure it's that....

Ollivander84 · 08/05/2018 21:36

Managed to swipe a load of the seventeen HD falsifye mascara for £2 each in boots and hand chemistry 30ml for £4 Grin

JDSTER · 08/05/2018 22:06

olli that’s just showing off Grin
mint frezy makes me oily, which I definitely do not need. Omelette was just red pepper fried off in a bit of butter to soften it (dint like crunchy peppers in an omelette Grin) then add beaten eggs and lots of feta at the end 😋
I’m not completely cutting out wheat just trying to reduce it as it definitely bloats me. I cut out wheat completely during my first pregnancy, following a particular pregnancy regime, and I didn’t put much weight on during pregnancy. Baby weight obviously but the rest of me was lean and I pinged back into shape straight away. Anyway, the point being, for me, less wheat is good.

EnidButton · 08/05/2018 22:26

I got shower gel for 30p in the bargain section of boots. No hand chemistry though! 😩

I have a bloody migraine again. Feel sick with it and my thumb tapping this out is going right through me.

I haven't had wheat or gluten for a few weeks now and my stomach has felt much better. Some cfs/me symptoms seem improved too. I find it quite easy to do so I'll carry on.

Actually I do fancy an egg now you mention them JD. Maybe my head will feel better after food.

Sorry for whining on again. Getting it off my chest. Night night Brew
