Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

mintmagnummm · 09/05/2018 06:05

I'm an Essex girl (not your typical one 🤭)

mintmagnummm · 09/05/2018 07:14

Hmmm very strange, no stinging eyes this morn with frezy 🤔🤔

TantricTwist · 09/05/2018 08:56

No moisturiser for me today just straight in with my LRP antihelios matt spf and absolutely no stinging, so I guess for me at least the answer is to avoid moisturiser around the eyes before applying SPF.

mintmagnummm · 09/05/2018 09:10

I think I'm back in love with frezyderm 😂

zoClueless · 09/05/2018 10:00

Just catching up after a couple bust weeks at work and a hen weekend over the bank hol.

I’m doing the same as a few of you guys with wheat – just trying to cut down how much I am eating, and not cutting it out altogether as I don’t think removing an entire food without being diagnosed with something that requires it is good. I had a period where I found every meal included wheat, e.g. toast for breakfast, sandwich or wrap at lunch, pasta for dinner, and I was always bloated. Now I try to only have wheat with one meal and I do feel better for it.

In other news I STILL haven’t purchased a new spf Blush I know this is terrible and I’ve consequently spent a lot of time hiding my face from the sun over the past few days! My issue is that my skin has not improved enough from my recent/on-going breakout for me to be confident in testing a new spf and knowing whether it was causing me problems or not, but I also know that relying on spf in foundation only is not good at all so I am determined to order something today!

JDSTER · 09/05/2018 16:39

mint you’re so fickle Grin
Actually I used frezyderm today on bare skin after cleansing, no Vit C, no moisturiser and it worked ok and I seemed less oily.

JDSTER · 09/05/2018 17:33

Zo same here, I could end up eating wheat at every meal. No wheat today so far but I’m off to pizza express with a friend tonight so that will change Grin. Do you have your eye on a particular SPF?

mintmagnummm · 09/05/2018 18:10

JDSTER Grin** i think u know my personality very well 😂

mintmagnummm · 09/05/2018 18:11

Oh and I'm the same re wheat! Could easily eat it at every meal!

TantricTwist · 09/05/2018 18:41

I managed to steer clear from any wheat today at an Italian restaurant for lunch by eating risotto and I felt full but not bloated and it was delicious, usually I eat one of their pizzas.

My skin is definitely feeling better after spf straight onto cleansed skin followed by Nars TM so I'm sticking to that.

zoClueless · 09/05/2018 20:46

JD definitely agree, could live on bread, pizza, pasta....all the wheat. I was out for drinks and dinner with a friend this evening so did end up having a burger but no wheat at lunch so happy with that.

Spf wise, I've been meaning to purchase the Elta MD spf 46 one as I suffer from acne which has taken a turn for the worse since coming off the pill and stopping using Epiduo/Adapalene for ttc. I think I'm probably going to have to purchase through amaz

zoClueless · 09/05/2018 20:47

Argh.... hit send by accident.

Was going to end with, going to have to purchase though amazon which makes me nervous for skincare.

EnidButton · 09/05/2018 21:47

Bit late now JD but Pizza Express do gluten free pizza and it's really nice.

JDSTER · 09/05/2018 22:24

zo I’ve bought skincare on amazon and not had any problems.

enid I had one of the leggera pizzas with a hole in the middle for salad. Mozzarella and tomato salad for starter so not too bad.

EnidButton · 09/05/2018 22:56

That sounds gorgeous JD! I haven't seen that one. I'm resisting going on a kitchen raid right now. Finally lost the 5lbs I wanted to shift and would prefer to drop another 2-3. I do love food. Grin

I might start a thread on this, but asking here first as you're all women of good taste Wink, what kind of dress does one wear to a wedding evening reception/party? Just the night part not the day.

I haven't been out out for ages either so feeling bit clueless about how dressy to go. I'm assuming it's not the same, or as formal, as you'd wear to the day ceremony/breakfast but dressier than a normal party?

I thought I'd found a dress earlier but it's sold out in my size. Only have a couple of weeks to find something and I want to make the effort and look really nice.

EnidButton · 09/05/2018 22:57

Thank you for any advice btw. I need guiding in the right direction. Grin

ignoring my hair for now

mintmagnummm · 10/05/2018 07:07

Sophie remind me do you use moisturiser before frezyderm? I'm trying it today without any. Still very nervous about the silicone texture, if I start getting those tiny whiteheads that can be scratched off then I know my skin doesn't like it! But also I've just finished a course of antibiotics and they also give me the same reaction!

MrsDOnofrio · 10/05/2018 08:40

mint I use Frezyderm without moisturiser. Use Vichy vit c and mineral 89 and put Frezyderm on top of that. But my skin is oily, less so currently than it used to be but I still get shiny. Finding the Frezyderm really helps with that. I really like it still

mintmagnummm · 10/05/2018 09:54

Thanks MrsD I used my Vichy mineral 89 this morn then frezyderm on top of that and it feels fine, thought it would struggle to hydrate my dehydrated skin but skin feels comfortable:-)

SophieLion · 10/05/2018 10:15

Hi Mint. No I don't use moisturiser or any actives at all now (not allowed!). So I put the Frezyderm straight on my skin.

Enid, can you get any clues as to what to wear from the venue (I mean how formal/posh/casual it is)? The invitation etc? The type of people he couple are? A nice jumpsuit for the evening might be good - it can look both formal and yet more casual because it's trousers. Probably also depends on your body type/shape. Again dress length probably depends on formal-ness of occasion and what you like/feel comfortable in. Sorry not very helpful but I'm better at clothes when I have seen the person they are going on! Smile

botemp · 10/05/2018 10:20

I just use it over a hydrating layer as well mint, it works fine. The technology used is quite interesting as it really sets as an occlusive layer (what moisturisers function as too) but it's different to other silicone products.

Enid, despite my chattiness on all things fashion elsewhere, I'm probably not the best to consult as weddings are far and few between here and not quite the formal affair they seem to be in the UK. You were looking for something with long sleeves, IIRC? I did see quite a bit of that at COS but &Other Stories is usually a good bet too. I'd go for something cocktail length and style but not full party glitzy sparkly type.

Speaking of wheat free, I have another glut of avocados so I'm going to make this recipe for avocado chocolate chip cookies subbing a banana for the sugar. I'm not sure how diet friendly they are, then again they are only 75 cals each.

National holiday here today (Ascension Day) so am enjoying to a long weekend, hopefully will get my empties up today.

Tsmummy08 · 10/05/2018 11:13

Enid How about a cocktail dress/little black dress for an evening do? I've got a few black dresses which I pair with cardis/scarves for such occasions...

mintmagnummm · 10/05/2018 11:32

Thanks Sophie and bo. I definitely prefer the frezyderm without moisturiser and it didn't sting like the avene did without a moisturiser underneath, also no eye stinging either the last two days so maybe that was something else 🤔.

EnidButton · 10/05/2018 14:15

Thank you! I was thinking cocktail dress. Is that about the right level of dressed up?
Maybe a pencil dress with some killer heels. Don't want to wear black as I don't suit it and my bum doesn't like jumpsuits but it was a good idea, thank you. A coloured version of a LBD. Smile
I've given up on sleeves which will make finding something easier. It's a fancy country hotel venue. I'd be fine if it was the full day, the evening part is throwing me. Easy for men, suit and tie for day, tie and jacket off for night. 🙄

I need a bloody hairdresser again too. I shouldn't be stressing over this, it's silly, it's just a night out, but I am a bit.

Anyway, thank you all, good advice. Wine
