Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

Sorry, not going to respond to everything and everyone but if anyone does have something they wanted my opinion on that didn't get answered on the thread previously, just repost and @ me (within reason) to make my life easier Smile

Enid, same offer of PMs stand for me. If it helps, you can always make the subject line 'Don't read unless I ask you' as it's 3AM and certain spinning thoughts are keeping you up, but by morning you've changed your mind on the need to discuss it. I don't consider the subject triggering at all and as far as I'm concerned this thread space can be whatever you want to be. Also, feel free to tell us to shut up about it, no offense will be taken.

Ivy, technically no, the original Obsessed with Asian Beauty threads (I think that's what they were called) sort of withered out but we discuss it on here too as some of us migrated out of that thread into this one.

Mint, I use 8 pumps, applied in two thin layers of 4. If I was doing one single layer I'd use at least 6 pumps. By my estimation that looks to be about the recommended amount of sunscreen (a large dollop, large coin sized) by my estimation. That's just the face, I use a similar amount for neck and chest area, depending on how low cut my top is.

So May 1st has come and gone Blush time for the roll call:

Since it's now been the first of the month again it’s time for the monthly overview to get a good idea of what everyone's been using up an trialing and how it's been working for them. I've drawn up a simple format for everyone to use, but it's a guide really no need to adhere to it to the letter Smile.

What do you ladies use on your brows?? I'm looking for new brow product as I'm not loving the maybelline satin one anymore! I tried Mac Pro long wear but it made my brows stiff and clumpy! And wasn't impressed with benefit 👌🏻

mintmagnummm · 04/05/2018 11:22

That was meant to be a 😫 not a 👌🏻 stupid phone

mintmagnummm · 04/05/2018 11:24

Bo thank you, that seems ALOT!! You're gonna go through that tube in no time. Are you still living it? Must say I'm very impressed so far, skin not as oily as it usually is by now either

EnidButton · 04/05/2018 12:09

bo Thank you, I really appreciate that. Flowers

botemp · 04/05/2018 12:14

Well, I should really weigh how much an average pump of Frezyderm is to give a more conclusive answer but I don't have one of those precision skill scales that do micrograms. But considering you need ±1.25 grams of SPF for the (average) face alone that means you'll be through a bottle within a month and a half or so, not taking in account top-ups on days when venturing out into the sun for long periods of time. So I'd say a month realistically, I usually switch to using a separate body SPF when coats are no longer necessary to wear out and then cover the neck with that instead of facial SPF.

I'm probably overdoing it by one or two pumps, but I'd rather be overdoing it than underusing it.

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 04/05/2018 12:23

True bo if I were using on holiday I'd use way more but for here 3-4 pumps is enough for my skin. I use the lrp kids one on my body it's best one I've ever used and only one my son doesn't react to!

TantricTwist · 04/05/2018 15:33

My Nars TM likes my LRP antihelios matte fluide SPF which is good because that stuff really does leave a very white cast so I'm pleased the Nars doesnt slide off.

I'm back home and my Frezy delivery hasnt arrived so hopefully should come anytime now.

I tried the new Hourglass veil powder but couldn't see any difference to what I use already tbh.

I also tried out in Space NK a lovely eye gel called Space defence bright eyelift gel by 111 Skin which did have magical immediate results but it is very £££.

TantricTwist · 04/05/2018 16:22

Yay my Frezyderm has arrived, I'll leave it a bit till I try it out as I don't want too many SPF open at the same time.

JDSTER · 04/05/2018 18:56

Bloody Frezyderm Angry.
Definitely making my skin oily. There’s obviously a particular ingredient in sunscreen that causes that with me. I had to return a LRP SPF once for doing the same, yet a different LRP is ok. Very disappointed Sad

Ollivander84 · 04/05/2018 19:42

I bought a salux washcloth from Amazon. Wow, it's definitely scrubby!

mintmagnummm · 04/05/2018 20:09

Oh no JDSTER that's a shame! Today was only my first day using it so too early to know for sure if it's a winner for me but first impressions are really good! I think my skin was less oily tbh. I'm poorly again, got tonsillitis now after only recently having an ear infection! My immune system is definitely low.

mintmagnummm · 04/05/2018 20:10

And to top it off a migraine is making an appearance! Had to stop the beta blockers as they were affecting my asthma

SallieSallow · 04/05/2018 20:19

Frezyderm most definitely does not make me oily but my skin is going through an oddly dry phase. I still think it's hormonal as feeling a bit periody but no sign of anything yet.

I don't think I'm using enough though as I'd been doing 3-4 pumps, but I use a different one (cicabio) on lower neck and chest. I don't use any spf at all on my body apart from the backs of my hands but I'm usually covered up in clothes.

I've looked at salux Olli but I think you have to soak in the bath for a while before using otherwise they don't work? I get really bored in a bath and want to get out as soon as I'm in.

I am starting to really like my hourglass, I watched some of the YouTube videos Miffy recommended and got some good ideas though I don't think I'll use the palest colour much for everyday. I used the beige colour as an all over powder and the darker one as a bronzer today (sorry I keep forgetting their names and too lazy to get up and look!), didn't bother with a mattifying powder and thought I looked a lot fresher than usual.

SallieSallow · 04/05/2018 20:20

Mint Sad Flowers tonsillitis is horrid, have you got antibiotics for it? I hope you feel better soon.

Ollivander84 · 04/05/2018 20:40

Sallie, nope! The salux are ones you can use in the shower, the others are like hand mitts that you have to soak with

mintmagnummm · 04/05/2018 20:45

Thanks Sallie yes I'm on antibiotics which as you may know really upset my skin so am popping piriton every 4hrs which I'll need to continue even after my antibiotics have finished, even on piriton I still get the reaction from the antis

Jozxyqk · 04/05/2018 22:26

APRIL EMPTIES, TRIALS, AND PLANNED PURCHASES

ROUTINE

Assuming I'm not having a migraine:

AM

LRP cream cleanser / Sukin foaming cleanser, depending on if my skin feels a bit dry or oily. Also I tend to use the cream in the shower, & the foaming one lives in my wash bag to use at the sink. So it varies.
Rose water as toner.
Occasional sprays of LRP Serozinc throughout
TO Vit C lotion
Vichy aqualia thermal serum
Avene hydrance light moisturiser
Biore aqua rich watery essence SPF 50

PM

LRP cream cleanser / Sukin foaming cleanser, depending on if my skin feels a bit dry or oily. Also I tend to use the cream in the (not very hot) shower, & the foaming one lives in my wash bag to use at the sink. So it varies.
Rose water as toner.
Occasional sprays of LRP Serozinc throughout
COSRX BHA if I have time, then at least 20 minute break.
BR P50 5x per week, TO retinoid 2x per week
Vichy aqualia thermal serum
Avene hydrance light moisturiser
LRP Cicaplast on any healing blemishes overnight, to reduce red marks

If I have a migraine:

Either cleanser - depending which type of migraine I have, warmth on my head can be excruciating or helpful. So I might get a quick shower, or not. Then rose water toner & sit in a towel until I'm dry. Then back to bed. Occasionally I have to skip it entirely as I can't move.

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL:

Clinique All about eyes cream (not the rich one). I only got a tester amount a few days ago, to check that I'm not allergic, & bought a pot today. So far it's definitely been better - as I usually don't use anything around my eyes except for cleanser & sunscreen, and makeup / remover very occasionally. It remains to be seen if it diminishes my dark circles at all, which is what I'm really hoping for.

PLANNED PURCHASES:

I'd really like a recommendation for a different serum. I didn't get on with the TO Buffet at all...I still have a couple of marks several weeks later. Someone mentioned that the Vichy is quite siliconey and as it's not especially cheap to begin with I'd like to look at possible alternatives.

SPECIAL MENTION:

I've been doing that Japanese facial massage, not every day but reasonably regularly, as part of my cleansing ritual, for about a year now. I use whatever I'm cleansing my face with, as the lubricant - so I usually do it in the shower, with LRP cream cleanser. I think that the 11 lines that had slightly started to show between my eyebrows, & some fine lines around my eyes, have reduced. I have no other wrinkles so far. Am 37. TBH, even if I found a cleanser I really preferred over the LRP cream cleanser, I think I'd still repurchase it for this reason.

TantricTwist · 05/05/2018 00:20

I thought this might be interesting esp for people like me Blush who think it's ok to get away without wearing spf under their spf makeup when outside for short periods of time, clearly it's not.

Joz really pleased you like the All about eyes its great stuff although I really did like that ridiculously expensive Space defense bright eye lift gel by 111Skin today. However I'll be sticking with Clinique for now.

Bioderma Micellar water
or Murad anti-blemish face wash
LRP Thermal Water
NIOD CAIS (I have a coupe of uses left)
LRP Toleraine Fluide non oily
LRP Antihelios matt SPF
Nars TM

PM
Bioderma Micellar water

LRP Thermal Water
NIOD CAIS (I have a couple of uses left) It's lasted ages as you only need 6 drops for your whole face
Neostrata skin active retinol
or PC 2% BHA skin perfecting
LRP Toleraine Fluide non oily
Sea Kelp Coral either mixed in with LRP or on its own layered before or after LRP
Neutrogena Hydro boost water gel or cream a couple of times a week or so.

EMPTIES:

NIOD MMHC - Its ok I'm just not a fan of HA at the moment. This is my favourite HA product though as I hated TO buffet and Hylamide sub Q - both sticky and horrid.

NIOD CAIS - I really like this and it seems to keep my skin looking fresh and youthful. I'm not going to repurchase till Autumn because I want to see if there is a difference and try other products.

Neostrata skin active retinol - I love this stuff it seems to really suit my skin but do not use after an acid because your face will burn otherwise it's fine. I will repurchase this but not till Autumn if I think I still need it.

Till then I will use up the TO retinoid I still have and try other products.

Mini reviews of finished products and your thoughts and whether you’d repurchase or already have.

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL:

Sea Kelp Coral - Active Formula - I really like this because its a gel that can be mixed in with your moisturiser or used alone. Its great for oily skin used alone.

Liz Earle skin repair Moisturiser - I've gone off that already but will use up slowly on a rare dry skin day - I just cant use it every day like my LRP my skin is too sensitive.

I have and am about to trial
Omorovicza moor cream cleanser
and
Goldfaden MD Wake up call
and
Frezyderm
and
SR Skincare copper peptide serum

mintmagnummm · 05/05/2018 06:51

How do you copy and paste the routine sheet??

mintmagnummm · 05/05/2018 06:51

Oh and tell me more about the Clinique eye cream???

Jozxyqk · 05/05/2018 07:05

Ah, @Botemp - sorry I just realised you asked that you asked we tag you with any specific queries. Please see my query above re the serum, under "planned purchases". I don't have a specific one I've got my eye on, I just suspect that the Vichy might not be the best fit for me? I don't do well with niacinamide, or wheatgerm oil (have reacted to products with both ingredients in).

mintmagnummm · 05/05/2018 08:44

Joz try the Vichy mineral 89!

botemp · 05/05/2018 08:58

The Vichy Mineral 89 is an alternative but so are the Japanese hydrating toners which are a lot more economical. I like the Kohaku Hada lotion (the amber one), but many like the original Hada Labo. I suspect the HL premium one would be too much for your skin.
