🐌 Fantastic Skincare: The One Where Sallie Swallows Dermaplaned a Lion Named Fabio

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

Have any of you heard of altruist spf 50? If so how does it compare to the frezyderm? The altruist is very cheap but has amazing reviews 🤔

TantricTwist · 05/05/2018 13:54

mint you just hold your mouse down and drag over the words you want to copy so they're highlighted
then press the copy button on the top of your screen, usually under edit followed later by paste

If you have a Mac press you can these shortcut buttons - the cmd button and the C to copy and later Cmd and V to paste.

If you have a normal PC / laptop ie not apple then press ctrl and C button and ctrl and V button to copy and paste

How do you not know this mint >>hugs

mintmagnummm · 05/05/2018 14:10

Tant I thought Mac was a brand of makeup 😂

TantricTwist · 05/05/2018 17:58

Oh mint Grin

TantricTwist · 05/05/2018 18:03

Big fat hairy Glitterball I have no idea what to wear out to a big party tonight - there will be dancing, god help me.

Black skinny jeans and a shirt or an LBD as no one will really care too much and it'll be bloody hot or something else entirely.

TantricTwist · 05/05/2018 18:26

Meh my tummy is far more rotund than I thought Shock So I'm wearing a shirt with some 3/4 length linen trousers. Now what shoes Confused

EnidButton · 05/05/2018 19:37

Did you get sorted Tant? I'm still hunting for a dress for an evening party. I just want sleeves goddamnit but it seems to be the wrong time of year for them.

There's a review (sponsored) of a medik8 product from Caroline B m.youtube.com/watch?v=8H2hPP-go0M

Haven't watched it all yet but thought you guys might be interested.

As an aside, is her forehead/eyebrow angle the result of slightly too much Botox? I'm still considering it myself so trying to weigh up how much I'd want to get. Don't mean to be mean, she looks great.

Also what is her accent? It's identical to Lisa Eldridge and Sali Hughes. Is it just a generic London accent? I'd quite like to sound like that instead of 'friendly Northerner' Grin

mintmagnummm · 05/05/2018 19:51

Tant meant to say earlier I'm on a iPhone not a computer 🤔

mintmagnummm · 05/05/2018 19:52

*an iPhone not a!

EnidButton · 05/05/2018 20:31

Long hold a word in the bit you want to copy. Expand the blue highlighted bits until it covers everything you want. Then tap 'copy'.

Long hold the blank space you're copying it to and tap paste.

SophieLion · 05/05/2018 21:35

Hi Enid, she sounds like she has a normal London accent to me (that's where I'm from).
I don't profess to be any kind of expert in Botox but she looks to me like she's had her forehead done. I have seen a woman here who had too much Botox in forehead and it pulled her eyebrows right up. Don't know if that's what's happened to the you tube woman too but the angle of her eyebrows is very severe....

Hope you had a fabulous evening Tant! I'm sure you look gorgeous Smile

SophieLion · 05/05/2018 21:38

I'm clarifying: the eyebrows are ok until she raises them. Like you Enid, I'm not quite sure what's going on there! Confused

mintmagnummm · 06/05/2018 07:39

Thanks Enid x

mintmagnummm · 06/05/2018 07:47

@botemp what are your thoughts on altruist spf 50? It's very cheap (amazon) and has rave reviews! How does it compare to frezyderm?

TantricTwist · 06/05/2018 07:51

Thanks guys yes I had a brilliant evening catching up with lots of friends and talking to new people. I was very happy with my outfit choice esp as you only really notice the top half unless someone is wearing exceptionlly lovely shoes or an amazing dress or skirt as a couple of friends did.

Thank god I always have something useful in my wardrobe ie the shirt I wore yesterday with a beautiful pattern that doesn't seem to ever date.
Again I was told quite a few times by various people that I look at least 10 years younger, I always say its because I'm a bit chubby to which I'm kindly told no you are not actually >>whispers I bloody well am I'm a size 16 and couldn't zip myself into my chosen outfit earlier

TantricTwist · 06/05/2018 07:54

Enid I love a friendly northerner accent, always have always will

botemp · 06/05/2018 07:54

I have a natural inclination to be very mistrustful of anything too cheap in something like sunscreen. Realistically, it will probably perform as advertised for UVB rays but not for UVA rays (B is for burning, A is for ageing) as the regulation on UVA rays aren't regulated at the same degree and the UK 1-5 stars system is deeply flawed. So in short, if all you care about is UVA rays (not the best position to take, but better than no sunscreen) then it's probably perfectly serviceable, the best performing UVB filters are more expensive, hence you'll rarely see them in cheaper products. Full disclosure, haven't looked it or the INCI up.

botemp · 06/05/2018 08:01

Enid, I'm trying really hard to read your posts in a friendly Northerner accent. Not working, the Mallory tower accent still persists Grin

Funnily enough, Sali Hughes and Lisa Eldridge sound like import Londoners to me (an adopted accent rather than their original one), LE even sounds like she grew up abroad for a bit, but what do I know as a total non-Londoner.

SophieLion · 06/05/2018 08:35

Morning all,

Enid, mean to ask yesterday: how are you doing? Thanks

Hope you're feeling better now Bo (and everyone else who was poorly).

Tant - sounds like you had a fantastic evening and great compliments!! Smile

Who here is/was using tret/Retin A/ differin (ie a prescription retinoid) for acne? I recall JDSTER and I think someone else (Sallie?). I have some queries about my experience with it.....

botemp · 06/05/2018 08:59

Enid can speak for herself, but just from personal experience going through a similar thing as Enid, it was hugely frustrating when people continually asked 'how I was doing' as it's pretty easy to make an educated guess that the answer was not a socially preferred 'fine' or 'better' when those have become abstract concepts for the foreseeable future and not every person who asks is entitled to the confusing emotional state you're in either. I know it's meant from a good place but it's a frustrating question to continually get as you're basically being poked on a sore spot, reminding you of pain that you just managed to surpress for the sake of getting by and then getting a startled response when you respond with 'ow'.

Not meaning to pick on you Sophie, but when I mentioned upthread this space should be whatever it needs to be for Enid, I hoped to convey that it's hers to decide what it is. Support when she asks for it, mindless distraction the next, different things at different moments, whatever she wants it to be. That means (to me anyhow) that she dictates the terms on that, so it's her subject to bring up or not when and if it suits her. She may be of completely different mind which is also completely fine but I do think it's important to keep in mind.

Sorry for being thread policing, but just wanted to give a bit of insigh with hindsight. If you do want to be supportive show concern, etc. moreso in RL situations, it's always better to frame questions as an offer or choice, 'do you need anything from me', 'do you need practical help', etc. That way it allows someone to say yes and share when they want to, or say no without social repercussions. Practical help is massively valued as things just slip as they become less important but rarely is this need observed or catered to.

SophieLion · 06/05/2018 09:21

I've read what you say Bo. Understand what you are saying and where you are coming from. But two paragraphs "educating" me on how to behave in such situations (and in RL too) when I was just trying to be kind seems a bit excessive. I appreciate why you have seen my question as insensitive but I don't think it warranted that kind of telling off. FYI I've been up half the night with an ill DC and perhaps wasn't thinking 100% when I phrased my question to Enid. Of course you are not to know that...

Enid. - I'm sorry if I caused upset. Was just trying to let you know I was thinking of you. no need to respond. I'm always of the opinion that people can respond to what they want and ignore what they want.

Anyway wishing you all a good day. I'm off to donate blood now so hope I don't end up feeling even more wrecked and floppy than I do right now!

mintmagnummm · 06/05/2018 09:54

Thanks bo but I'd prefer an answer based on you looking at the ingredients lol but sorry I forget that your probably busy and don't want to constantly be looking up stuff for people!
Sophie I too have been through similar shit and I wouldn't take offence to your comment, yes it can get frustrating but I would know that it came from a good heart and showing you care. I hope your DC is ok, my son is poorly at mo too.

Ok so I'm not sure about frezyderm as much as it pains me to say! I bloody love the texture and the way it glides over the skin leaving no trace of grease or white cast but I think it's causing little whiteheads and it's making my eyes smart!! Now I'm stuck as I'm not sure I want to go back to avene now I've experienced something without the dreaded shine etc but I don't know what else to try! Also when I clicked on return on amazon it says this item is non returnable!! Not impressed!
