Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

My skin is being a bit weird too, no more whiteheads but it's really dry today, well my lower face is anyway but my forehead is oily as usual Confused I think it might be hormonal, my periods are sporadic/irregular but I've got a feeling that one might be imminent.

No hourglass yet Sad

Ollivander84 · 02/05/2018 19:07

So frezyderm SPF... after moisturiser?

JDSTER · 02/05/2018 19:17

Yes olli. It’s feels just like a silicone primer. I didn’t use it today but I’ll try it again tomorrow.

mintmagnummm · 02/05/2018 19:31

Yes I think mine is hormones too as it's that time at the moment. From around day 13 it all goes tits up and sometimes I don't come on until 40 odd days! On average it's 35-37 for me so it's a long period of shit symptoms 😫

TantricTwist · 02/05/2018 20:04

I think I was a bit overzealous with my flannel last night post 1st balm cleanse. I forget actually that because the Nars isnt as heavy duty as foundations, even though it gives great coverage, it comes off much easier. I could probably have got away with just my second cleanse.

EnidButton · 02/05/2018 20:05

I'm starting my period now. Thank god, because my worrying brain needs to chill. Realised a weird thing. If I shave my legs when I'm on my period, I get razor burn and sensitive, burning skin. Any other time of the month it seems to be ok if I use a fresh razor and the shower oil afterwards.
Just realised because yet again I'm sat here with my shins on fire. 🙄 I'm going to leave them alone for a couple of weeks. 🐻

JDSTER · 02/05/2018 20:35

I hate it when that happens enid. I’ve got some aloe vera gel for such occasions

mintmagnummm · 02/05/2018 20:42

That's funny u should say that Enid as the same happens to me!

EnidButton · 02/05/2018 23:05

I think the skin is more sensitive due to hormones or something Mint. I read to avoid plucking eyebrows as it might sting more, but never thought it might be why I get shaving burn sometimes.

Aloe Vera! I knew there was something I meant to get for it last time I posted. Will add to my shopping list for tomorrow. Thanks JD

I think treating skin extra gently in the week up to a period, and during it, is a good idea. It's tempting to do extra things to it as it often looks worse that week but the opposite is probably best. Must remember for next month!

Tsmummy08 · 03/05/2018 07:33

Are our periods synchronising or something? Grin

I'm trying Frezyderm again today - I've had a few small spots the last couple of days and I'm really hoping it's hormone related rather than SPF related... although my skin has been less than perfect over the last month and I'm wondering whether it could be due to increased testosterone levels from my weight training?..... (thinking aloud there)...

Ollivander84 · 03/05/2018 08:09

Frezyderm on under EL DW today, fab. Love the formulation, best SPF I've tried

mintmagnummm · 03/05/2018 09:37

Mine should be here today!

mintmagnummm · 03/05/2018 13:12

I HAVE MY FREZYDERM 🤪. Now do I put it under or over my usual moisturiser??

Tsmummy08 · 03/05/2018 13:14

Over! Like a normal SPF :)

mintmagnummm · 03/05/2018 14:00

Thank you! Looking forward to trying it in the morning (and a little scared lol)

SallieSallow · 03/05/2018 18:33

Woo hoo Mint!

I have big news too as my hourglass has arrived!!! (and my Gtech Grin)

I couldn't resist testing the hourglass and it does give a lovely soft focus glow but think I need to play around with it and try different brushes etc as the palest colour is a bit too noticeably sheeny/shiny on me for day wear, think it would be good for night out though. Plus my skin is not at it's best right now (still dry round my nose and chin) and I slapped it on over the makeup I'd been wearing all day in work.

Those who use it, do you also use any other setting or mattifying powder and do you use the hourglass over the top of that? I don't think I can ditch mattifying powder in the summer but I don't want to look caked in powder either.

Someone mentioned watching YouTube videos for some ideas but I didn't like the ones I found, so if anyone can steer me towards some that are a bit less screechy and ideally not a youngster who slaps on 27 layers of makeup to take selfies in that would be appreciated Smile

Off for a fiddle with my Gtech now Grin

JDSTER · 03/05/2018 19:18

Frezyderm used again today. Multiple blotting papers required during the day I’m afraid. It’s not lived up to my expectations unfortunately. I’ll use tomorrow on a day off and see.

miffy2 · 03/05/2018 19:30

Yay, Sallie!!

Have a look at Wayne Goss, Jessica Braun and Stephanie Nicole on YT, they are some of my favourites (and all over 30!). You can search for hourglass in their channels. Also Stephanie Marie, Mrs Ginger Beauty and Elle Leary.

I definitely use the lightest shade as a highlighter. The one to the left, dim light, is my favourite; I dust that on my cheekbones and forehead and nose after everything else is one, including setting powder. The one to the right I would use as a summer bronzer.

TantricTwist · 03/05/2018 19:55

I have accidentally bought Frezyderm off Amazon and now it's due tomorrow Confused

SallieSallow · 03/05/2018 20:15

Miffy the darker one on the right is definitely the best for me, it doesn't show up much on me as I'm not pale so it wouldn't be a bronzer, it just sort of blends in and gives a nice soft focus look. I'll need to play around with the two lighter shades but I think the very pale one might have to be kept for nights out only. And thank you I'll check out those people you've mentioned, so many youtubers annoy the crap out of me, if I hear one more 'Heeeyyy youuuuuu guuuuyssss, welcome to my channel' guff I think I'll launch my iPad Angry

Ha more frezyderm frenzy Tant Grin

Sorry you don't like it JDSTER it's definitely not making me oily but my skin is oddly dry/flaky at the moment Confused I hope it's not the frezyderm causing that but I might go back to bioderma for a few days just in case.

EnidButton · 04/05/2018 00:28

Tomorrow I'll mainly be watching YT thanks Miffy Grin

I'm looking for things to make me look glowing and fabulous and extra polished for a thing I have to go to in a couple of weeks. Can't find anything to wear but looking for make up and beauty bits is more interesting.

EnidButton · 04/05/2018 00:32

I am so glad that my period has started properly btw. I was totally wired today. Can feel myself calming down already.

IvyFluids · 04/05/2018 00:39

Is this the original snail/asian beauty topic? I left MN for a year or so and decided to come back Wink

EnidButton · 04/05/2018 00:42

🐌 welcome back Ivy, yes it is. 😁

mintmagnummm · 04/05/2018 07:08

Ok so how many pumps of frezy is everyone using?? I did 3 full pumps which felt adequate and spread all over my face and neck nicely, is this enough?? It's very odd, feels exactly like a primer which scares me as I can't use silicone based products however there is none of that cyclo silicone that is my usual trigger and the first ingredient in 90% of primers. Here's hoping!!
