Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Enid what Sallie said 'you can always PM me if you feel you want a 'neutral' listening ear but don't want to post publically'. Flowers

SallieSallow · 30/04/2018 18:33

Tant I got elasticiser from Qvc a few years ago, it did nothing for me at all (was hoping for frizz control) and it was a faff, my hair takes ages as it is so adding an extra step wasn't ideal. I sent it back as it wasn't cheap. I've not had much success with PK at all though, his flaky scalp stuff didn't work for me either, I found Eucerin much better and it's less than half the price.

TantricTwist · 30/04/2018 18:34

sallie looking up Eucerin as we speak

SallieSallow · 30/04/2018 18:51

Tant Eucerin is a very functional shampoo for dry scalps, I use their scalp tonic as well as 'nice' shampoos and conditioners make my head and forehead dry and itchy.

Beautylish are enabling me now as have emailed me about this
www.beautylish.com/s/hourglass-veil-translucent-setting-powder
I'll wait and see how I get on with the ambient palette first though.

Tsmummy08 · 30/04/2018 18:51

Oh yes, and I ordered the Frezyderm as well, ahem, Grin in spite of the fact there's a fair chance it'll make me spotty due to the silicone content - I'm a dick!

JDSTER · 30/04/2018 19:30

Look what just arrived Grin.
I’ll give it a go in the morning. Tant I was given a PK set with elasticiser in and I really didn’t rate it above any other deep conditioner I’ve ever used. I think we have similar hair type, fair and fine?

TantricTwist · 30/04/2018 21:36

JDster I like the way the Frezy bottle looks irl

Sallie yes that Hourglass powder looks interesting.

I wonder how it compares to their ambient light powder and if you would wear the latter over the former or what exactly. Too much choice

I will dodge the PK.

mintmagnummm · 30/04/2018 21:44

Thanks JDSTER that's very kind, but I don't think I want to pay that much money and if I love the samples I'm screwed! Thanks again tho!

I might try my eucerin shampoo again tomorrow, I just really struggle with conditioner as I need one I can safely apply near my scalp as just applying to mid length and ends has never worked for me! My hair is so coarse and damaged but gets greasy really quick so finding something that is moisturising enough yet not too heavy has been a disaster so far! I'm prone to getting breakouts and rashes on my hair line, temples and anywhere my hair touches if there's anything really fragranced or greasy! And all serums contain that cyclo shit silicone!

mintmagnummm · 30/04/2018 21:45

I WANT MY FREZYDERM 😤

SallieSallow · 30/04/2018 21:59

Awww Mint it will be with you soon. I know how you feel though as I want my hourglass (and my Gtech) Grin

My scalp and skin react to a lot of shampoos and conditioners but I'm fine with Eucerin shampoo and tonic only on my scalp, I do smooth a little bit of argan oil over any frizzies at the top of my head but I don't put it on or near the scalp. My hair is super dry though and never gets greasy. Not sure why my face is so oily as the skin on my body is quite dry too Confused

peonylover22 · 30/04/2018 22:02

Catching up!
Flowers Enid I’m sorry to hear your news.
Looks like there has been quite the Frezyderm frenzy 😂 I’ll jump on the bandwagon once I’ve finished the current tube of Biore watery essence which I’m now getting on well with now I’ve paired it with the LRP ultra toleraine moisturiser on the cheeks.
My Effaclar double cleanse is still going well too. It’s 20 days since I stopped taking Yasmin / Lucette and I was really expecting a big breakout but so far, so good. I’ve just added in the Effaclar duo as moisturiser on t-zone rather than a clarins one I was using up.
I’ve also started with the acids. Went for nip+fab glycolic pads after reading rave reviews and even though I’m only using them twice a week there has been an immediate reduction in fine lines. Also tryingvthe Paula’s choice BHA in the hope of finally clearing up slightly congested chin but no similar dramatic improvements yet.
Finally using Vichy aqualia eye serum too and really liking it, but underwhelmed by all over face serum. Is the mineral 89 one any better?
Where to next? Vitamin C?

EnidButton · 30/04/2018 23:56

Sallie and Tant*, thank you that's very kind. I'll bear that in mind. ❤️

EnidButton · 01/05/2018 00:10

Tant I use and really like elasticizer. I get the best results if my hair isn't soaking wet when applied and if I leave it for about 45 minutes. I think the key thing with it is to rinse and rinse and rinse, and then rinse a bit more, before shampooing. I also use a clarifying shampoo with it (well, the lush one). Feels counter-intuitive but leaving any trace of it seems to have the opposite effect to what you want. It makes my hair feel stronger and bouncier and generally very healthy. Gives a good shine too. They do little tubes of it you can try before getting a big pot.

I had olaplex the last time I had my hair coloured (the over straightened annoying fringe cut) and it's brilliant! The ends were incredibly soft and smooth with no trace of dryness or frizz at all. Think it's wearing off now but it's been a few weeks.
You could have used the back of my head as mirror by the time she finished overstraightening it, the gloss was so impressive. I'm definitely going to get it done again.

I looked at getting the step 3 for home but it's such a small bottle for the price. Tempted though.

My hair is very thick, slightly wavy ends, roots can be oily and ends are prone to dryness.

EnidButton · 01/05/2018 00:16

Thank you Peony and MrsD 💗

Tant I wouldn't recommend the PK if your hair is fine. From reading threads about it in the past, it does seem like it's better for thicker hair. People with finer hair don't seem to get on with it.

The Frezyderm bottle is very nice for an spf.

TantricTwist · 01/05/2018 01:36

Thanks Enid I think therefore the PK will be too much.

I remember now from previous photos around fringegate that you have enviable thick, dark, glossy locks.

That's pretty amazing the Olaplex has lasted so long.
I'm up late because I've been reading, now my eyes are too tired to concentrate but I still feel awake, off to listen to audio book.

EnidButton · 01/05/2018 12:56

I think it kind of bonds to your hair Tant. I did have enviable locks. Atm it's just very thick, heavy feeling and annoying.

MrsDOnofrio · 01/05/2018 13:56

Frenzyderm update - used it for a couple of days now. I really like how it feels, I really like how it looks, doesn’t make my eyes sting, like the fact I can’t smell it on (I know I keep banging on about smells but they can trigger migraines), not keen on the packaging. My only problem with it is that it’s so unlike a sunscreen that I don’t feel convinced it is a sunscreen. Does that sound weird? My sunscreen and I have trust issues Grin

mintmagnummm · 01/05/2018 14:47

Ohhhhhh MrsD you have just made me think about FREZYDERM again, had put it out of my mind but now all I'm thinking of is I WANT IT NOW NOW NOW 😂. It says arriving Thurs, I can't cope! And my avene made that noise like it does when it's at the end 😫😫

miffy2 · 01/05/2018 15:43

Mint think of me here in Ireland...mine wont get here till Saturday!

A quick update on my recent SpaceNK hauls. Full disclosure I went back and also bought the new Hourglass veil powder. For some reason I am all about face makeup this month.

So:
today I tried out NARS TM in Groenland. I thought it might be a tad doo dark but in fact it is a perfect spring/summer shade for me. Underneath I had applied DE tinted spf which is VERY dewy so the overall finish was verging on shiny. I will try it with a different spf tomorrow. Then I used NARS creamy concealer in Vanilla which went on like a dream.
The veil powder is interesting. Definitely not a matte finish, at least on my face this morning. Very very light. It made my face feel tight for about 30 seconds but most powders do that anyway. My face feels lovely after 8.5 hours of wear. Again I will try the powder with different foundations to see how it works. Packaging is just gorgeous though!

The TM has not held up as well as IT Cosmetics CC cream or Revlon Colorstay but it is a TM so it has done very well for that.

The ambient powder is lovely - again one of those hard to describe things, let's just say it blurs the face a little bit ;)

The final product was the NARS wanted palette (the lighter of the two). They look very pale in the pan but are very pigmented; I used one of the lighter shades today and was like 'woah!' when I put it on very lightly. Blush is not really my comfort zone, I have 2 or 3 that I really like but they are all very light in pigment. I will work with it and see how I get on.

MrsDOnofrio · 01/05/2018 15:45

Sorry mint but just think about how extra special it will be when it finally arrives Smile

miffy2 · 01/05/2018 15:47

On a very different note I gave my peach fuzz a little shave last night! I have been thinking about trying it out on my jawline particularly as I have awful peach fuzz there. I was very cautious and used an eyebrow razor on clean, dry skin. I just did a patch on one side of my face, from the ear down to the chin, so it is not very noticeable that I have done one side, IYKWIM. Today the area feels lovely and to be honest not 100% fuzz-free, but I am going to give it a couple of weeks and see how it grows back. Shouldn't be any different to waxing or threading I imagine. Has anyone else done this?

Jozxyqk · 01/05/2018 16:30

Miffy2 - yes, I have tried it a couple of times recently as my hair is super short. TBH I didn't like it. My skin is on the oily side & the complete lack of hair made the feel of my skin very strange to me. I doubt anyone else would notice, but I wasn't keen. I went back to plucking out any unwanted visitors. Of which I have not a few, thanks to untreatable PCOS. I used to get the occasional ingrown hair but no more since I started using gentle chemical exfoliating products.

Tsmummy08 · 01/05/2018 16:41

MrsD I felt exactly the same about my Frezyderm today - I kind of don't think it'll work! It doesn't feel like any sunscreen I've used before and I'm not entirely convinced Hmm.... given all the actives I use, any failings will be extremely obvious...

SophieLion · 01/05/2018 17:26

I get your distrust MrsD as the same thing crossed my mind too. It's so different to normal sun creams. But, honestly it must work as I've got friends here who have used it for years and haven't seen them with burnt faces Grin

Had to brave the beach today (I've started the tret so was a little nervous) but kept my hat glued to my head, sat in shade and reapplied sun screen I don't know how many times!
