Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

I think sls free and 'natural' are worse for my hair/scalp!

SallieSallow · 29/04/2018 14:04

My frezy was £15ish, that was the cheapest I saw it but I didn't look super hard as I prefer to order from amazon if possible as it's easier to return. They never seem to argue or quibble and will often just refund without even wanting the item back.

Mint I think you've already tried my shampoo recommendations (Eucerin shampoo and scalp tonic only on my scalp, leave in conditioners and oils on the lengths) plus washing as infrequently as possible (my hair hates getting wet and throws a hissy for a couple of days after it's washed) and it didn't work for you.

I know I say this every month but I really need to stop spending, I bought a Gtech cordless vacuum yesterday, (my mum was the enabler for that purchase) & I really need to start saving £££ for a new car this year.

JDSTER · 29/04/2018 20:54

Grin at sallie and her gtech. I won’t be a 🐑 with that one. I definitely don’t need another vacuum cleaner!

miffy2 · 29/04/2018 21:20

mint prime doesn't really work for Ireland, as i found out after signing up for a trial last year lol. So I am waiting and will be waiting for a while too. Yes I ordered it, lol, along with a tinted/gradual tanning version of the Australian Gold one that I picked up in Spain. That should be me sorted for summer!

EnidButton · 29/04/2018 22:19

Can I share something because I feel like we all kind of know each other? Sorry if it's inappropriate. My Dad was diagnosed with cancer last week and he is dying. He's very very ill. I'm scared and don't know what to think or what to do.

I think I'm due on which is obviously not helping. I have cramps but don't know if it's worry or period pain. Hope it's my period so it's out of the way for this month. I have a few spots in places I don't usually have them and I look like poo. So yeah.

I'm going to buy lots of fancy make up and anything else that'll help and throw it all at my face. Like it's war paint or something. I don't know.

EnidButton · 29/04/2018 22:20

Don't let my post grind the thread to a halt btw. Flowers

JDSTER · 29/04/2018 22:37

Enid I’m so sorry. Your post took my breath away. I understand. I shared the news last year on here that my dad had died and you all helped in some small way. Those cramps may well be a physical manifestation of your inward pain Flowers

Just look after yourself as best you can and take comfort from friends and family around you.

TantricTwist · 29/04/2018 22:55

Enid Flowers.
No-one ever really knows how they are going to think or feel when this happens so just go with it.
It helps if you have someone to talk to about it, or to keep a diary to write your thoughts and reflections down.
Everyone is different so it's hard to explain how you are feeling to someone else.
If you are religious talk to your Parish Priest they are very good at helping you through a time like this.
And talk to the palliative care team.

TantricTwist · 29/04/2018 22:59

enid be honest about your feelings even if it's just to yourself or your diary no matter how complex they may be.

You're allowed to feel the way you feel whatever that may be.

SallieSallow · 29/04/2018 23:04

I'm so very sorry Enid Flowers & I agree the pain is probably stress/worry/sadness. Share as much as you feel comfortable with, we have all got to know each other and it's not inappropriate at all to talk about such a huge thing in your life.

Take care of yourself as best you can and buy lots of lovely makeup and Elemis, whatever it takes to helps you get through this.

TantricTwist · 29/04/2018 23:04

Grin at Sallie and her Gtec

I've given up on shampoo esp as I'll buy another bottle of something I think I like and works completely differently Confused

botemp · 29/04/2018 23:17

Flowers Enid

It's totally normal to feel a bit lost now. And it fucking hurts, it just does until you're able to catch your breath again. You've been shocked into grief before the event, up and down just no longer make sense. It's an odd process, and I wouldn't worry too much about irrational behaviour. Do whatever feels right to you and don't worry about anyone else thinks or expects of you.

EnidButton · 30/04/2018 00:39

Thank you all so much. Writing it down feels weird and I feel a bit guilty posting it. I won't go into any more detail just if I seem off or whatever it'll be that. Flowers I will definitely take all your advice and carry your kind thoughts with me.

JD and Bo I thought of you both before posting. Flowers I don't want to bring stuff up for you on a thread that's a nice sanctuary from the awful stuff. It's good to have somewhere to go to chat about lighthearted things. I'll definitely need it.

Love to you all. Cake

EnidButton · 30/04/2018 00:43

Sallie and Tant sorry didn't mean to miss you out. I really do appreciate your kindness and good advice. Flowers

EnidButton · 30/04/2018 01:10

(God so sorry, I'm over worrying atm. I should have said will die rather than dying. It's not the end part yet.)

mintmagnummm · 30/04/2018 06:42

Enid I know no words will help but just wanted to say I'm sorry 💐. Pain can definitely be from grief, I actually think my fibromyalgia has stemmed from grief in my case. I lost my step-father in law then 3 weeks later lost my dad very suddenly and unexpected 5 years ago now but I'm still broken, then found out my mum had cancer although luckily was early enough but it was an extremely difficult time. Have actually lost a lot of my family all in a short space of time.
I'm sorry I didn't mean to go off on one, didn't even plan to say anything on here tbh as I'm quite private but it just kind of came out. Anyway Enid I didn't mean to turn this around to me and my grief but just so you know your not alone. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and I hope you can all find a way to cope and get through it all together. Much love 💐💐

SophieLion · 30/04/2018 09:36

Oh Enid. I'm so sorry to hear your sad news 💗. I never know exactly what to say in these situations but the other ladies have written such supportive and wise things and I echo their kind words. Thinking of you: such a difficult time and you must take care of yourself. ❤️

Flowers for you too JDSTER for the loss of your father and for you too Mint for your grief and pain.🌸🌸

Tsmummy08 · 30/04/2018 11:16

So sorry to hear about your dad Enid - I've been where you are, it's devastating news.... sending love and hugs, take care of yourself and know whatever you feel is OK, be that anger, worry or numbness. Grief takes many forms xx

EnidButton · 30/04/2018 12:12

Thank you FlowersFlowers

JDSTER · 30/04/2018 17:49

I’ve ordered some more innis free powder which came surprisingly quickly, direct from Amazon. I’ve been much less oily since I’ve stopped using RMC powder. Always useful when you finally understand that a product isn’t working.
My frezyderm (my phone knows that word now Grin) was due today but no sign as yet.

mintmagnummm · 30/04/2018 17:58

I've been recommended Aveda scalp benefits shampoo and conditioner but it's soooo expensive I don't think I can justify spending that much on such small bottles!

JDSTER · 30/04/2018 18:01

mint Aveda are usually really generous with samples if you can get hold of them? I’m in town Friday so I’ll try and pick one up, if they have one

JDSTER · 30/04/2018 18:03

You’ve reminded me I always used aveda shampoo and conditioner. I’m not sure why I stopped getting them 🤔. They always smell divine.

SallieSallow · 30/04/2018 18:28

Enid you can always PM any of us if you feel you want a 'neutral' listening ear but don't want to post publically (says she who has not a clue how to PM on here but I'm sure I can learn!) Thinking of you and sending love ❤️

I have a frenzyderm update Grin have had it on all day to day in work under a full face of makeup and it's brilliant!! I think it's very primer like as my makeup went on very smoothly & has lasted well and I seem to be less oily than usual. So it's a winner for me so far 👍🏻 👍🏻 👍🏻

No sign of the hourglass palette yet - or my Gtech! I have a corded Shark that I love but it's a bit of a pain digging it out if I just want to vac up a few crumbs or something, & I kept borrowing my mum's Gtech to do my car so she persuaded me to get my own - she's the enabler in chief at the moment.

TantricTwist · 30/04/2018 18:28

I'm a bit baffled Confused by shampoos and conditioners at the moment esp as they stay on for such a short time anyway and seem much of a muchness for my type of long lank hair.

I'm just going to stick to using my Batiste shampoo to eek out a couple more days as seems to be the only thing that works.

Anyone used Philip Kingsleys Elasticiser with any success here? I don't want to try it and end up with a greasy, gloopy, sticky mess on my head. esp as so much effort is required in the pre shampoo stage ie getting my head wet 30 mins before shower >>shudder
