Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

I ordered mine yesterday too MrsD but I don't have prime so it says expected weds-thurs 😭

SallieSallow · 28/04/2018 18:02

My frenzied frezyderm arrived this morning (Amazon prime) and I'm wearing it now.

Same as MrsD I wasn't keen on the colour (yellow gel) smell (not perfumed just slightly medical) or texture (slippy/siliconey, bit like benefit porefessional, which I don't like) at first. But when I rubbed it on my face it disappeared completely, I've honestly never known any product to absorb without a trace like this stuff does Shock

It's absolutely fine under makeup but I'm only wearing a light layer of it cosmetics cc cream and no powder today and wasn't outside for long, but given how well it absorbs/disappears I think it will work fine under heavier makeup too & I can't see it making me oily or greasy, but the true test will be a full day in work.

But so far I'm impressed, thank you Sophie for recommending and Bo for seconding Smile

Jozxyqk · 28/04/2018 20:32

I would also be interested in eye cream recommendations. Especially anything that helps with dark circles, which I've had since childhood.

Also, I'm on the lookout for a new serum. Am currently using Vichy aqualia thermal dynamic hydration, but it seems pricey considering it's half full of silicone fillers. I did not react well to TO Buffet.

EnidButton · 28/04/2018 21:23

I managed to give myself a small patch of petechiae (tiny blood dots) under one eye. Had bad news, cried- seemingly a bit too hard-, washed face, and there it is. Hopefully will go by tomorrow but if not, what is a high coverage concealer and do I have to use a certain colour? Like I use peach for under eyes? That might work actually...

Sorry, Debbie downer over here. Also, EH balm is so so comforting to use. If anyone lurking reading has no particularly tricky skin needs and what a luxury cleansing balm to use, Emma Hardie is the one.

JDSTER · 28/04/2018 21:37

Sorry Enid you’ve had upsetting news Flowers. I’m sure they will go soon and your usual concealer will be fine. No one else will scrutinise and notice. I had a sniff of the EH cleansing balm this week actually, when I was in M&S (underrated beauty dept if you ask me) and thought of you as I know you love it and you may have mentioned it once or twice Wink

JDSTER · 28/04/2018 21:40

I may have ordered frezyderm.........
🐑
To be fair, reviews say it’s good for oily skin and you can’t have too much SPF right? Grin

EnidButton · 28/04/2018 21:50

Thanks JD I'm sure it'll go. It felt a bit insult to injury y'know?

I do like a nice smelling product. Which is daft really because all the really good stuff either has no scent or smells terrible. I do think it adds something though, even if it's washed off.

I'm keeping all my basics basic and not adding anything for the time being so no frenzyderm yet. I'll have to go into automatic pilot mode for a bit so no new stuff.

EnidButton · 28/04/2018 21:51

I do think it adds 'it' being the eh balm not scent itself.

EnidButton · 28/04/2018 21:52

I'm at it now. Frezyderm.

mintmagnummm · 28/04/2018 22:02

😩😩 everyone has amazon prime and I don't!

I'm still really struggling to find a shampoo and conditioner for my damaged coloured hair which doesn't make my scalp itchy!!

ChangoMutney · 28/04/2018 22:05

Could I ask you skincare gurus a couple of questions?

I've started using TO retinol, I've used retin a in the past and never got past the flaking stage so thought I'd give this a go. Can I use anything else in the evening or can I use serums/oils?

Anyone using a Nu Face? I'm on day three and see a small non permanent difference immediately I wonder how others have got on with it.

Jozxyqk · 28/04/2018 22:49

Enid - I regularly used to get petichiae around my eyes due to asthmatic coughing (it used to be very poorly controlled; I'm quite severe). It almost always cleared up within 24hrs. TBH, within 12hrs or so it had usually dispersed a bit so it just looked like I'd not had a good night's sleep. Sorry you've had bad news.

EnidButton · 28/04/2018 23:29

Thanks Joz. I didn't even realise I'd done it but I bruise easily and have had large patches of petichiae on my legs and chest a few times for no apparent reason so shouldn't have been surprised. I'm not doing anything in particular for a couple of days so hopefully it'll go. Hope your asthma is more under control these days. Sounds very scary.

Tbh it doesn't matter at all. I needed something pointless to be annoyed at I think.

TantricTwist · 28/04/2018 23:48

Enid Flowers

I didnt get round to pressing the buy button for Frezyderm but it's sounding like I will soon. I too have amazon prime mint

As for eye cream Joz the best one I've ever used is the Clinique all about eyes.

I've never really needed eye cream tbh but people love the Kiehls one with avocado oil.

The main reason actually I've started reusing my Liz Earle skin repair moisturiser is because it has avocado oil in it and I wanted to hydrate under my eyes, so I guess I do need eye cream. LE is fine for now.

Turns out my bioderma removes my waterproof mascara so no need to repurchase eyemake remover ever again thanks Bo for suggesting that pages ago to someone.

Chango I've used TO retinol in the past and will go back to using it.

I found it very mild and never flaked. I use the 2% granactive retinoid.

SophieLion · 29/04/2018 07:09

Oh Enid, I'm so sorry to hear that Thanks

Hope the Frezyderm lives up to expectations for all of you Grin

Thank you but not sure I can really take the credit Sallie. I'd been thinking about it for a while as it's very popular here but Bo reminded me about it again and then my derm told me to use it.

SophieLion · 29/04/2018 07:10

Hello Chango, Smile can't advise I'm afraid but out of interest, why did you stop using Retin A?

mintmagnummm · 29/04/2018 07:57

I have broken out again with sore red lumps and spots and skin oily, it's that same time of the month again! Not quite due on but just past the ovulation stage! It's weird as my skin is ok when I'm actually on my period but breaks out around ovulation time and then again once my period is finished! Any ideas why??

JDSTER · 29/04/2018 09:24

chango you can use serums/oils after the retinoid if you want. Retinoid should be in clean, dry skin and I’d wait a bit, even 10 minutes before you layer an oil over it. You’re unlikely to notice any effects like dryness or peeling. TO is a very mild retinoid to my mind (I personally didn’t notice any positive effects with it)
How long did you give retin a a go for? We’re you under the care of a dermatologist?

mint no ideas about your skin vs cycle but could you start a new thread for shampoo/conditioner recommendations because you’ve been after them for a while and obviously not found anything to your liking.

Jozxyqk · 29/04/2018 09:41

Enid - Thanks - it's much better these days, mostly. I bruise like a peach, too. DD does as well - she developed croup over Christmas & I called the NHS for advice & they immediately sent an ambulance. When the paramedics arrived she was unconscious on the sofa with petichiae around her eyes from coughing... that wasn't the most fun evening!

Tantric - thanks, I'll have a look out for that eye cream, I should be able to get it in town as it's one of the few big brands our one very small department store actually stocks! The joys of rural life. Grin

mintmagnummm · 29/04/2018 10:09

JDSTER i have started numerous threads about shampoo and conditioner over the years 😏

mintmagnummm · 29/04/2018 10:12

My hair actually looks singed in some places! And feels really wiry

SallieSallow · 29/04/2018 10:42

Enid Flowers hope the petichiae clears up soon.

Chango which TO ret are you using as if I remember correctly there are quite a few? I used their retinol 1% last year and I thought my face was going to fall off it was flaking so badly, apparently over the counter retinols can be just as (if not more) irritating for some people than retin-a/tretinoin - if you go back a couple of pages of this thread TantricTwist mentions it.

I'm still looking for a good eye cream (I have one that gives great temporary results but want something that will have a more long term effect) but my eyes react and get watery/stingy quite easily so I'm wary taking the plunge on some of the pricier ones, must try and source some samples.

JDSTER · 29/04/2018 11:31

In that case mint 🤷‍♀️

JDSTER · 29/04/2018 11:33

Ps- I’ve got amazon prime but ordered frezy from another seller as it was several pounds cheaper an I’m not in a rush.

mintmagnummm · 29/04/2018 13:05

Glad I'm not only one who has to wait for frezy lol
