Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

@RosieLig, I added some extra thoughts on the Medik8 R-retinoate in my empties overview this month a few pages back. I now use it 3x a week, alternating with BR P50 2-3x a week which is happy medium for me, nightly use of the Medik8 was a bit much even though it did deliver raid results. I'm still very happy with it, it's like having a very good skin day everyday but I wouldn't be recommending it if your skin can handle other forms of retinoids. So a good choice if retinol or encapsulated retinol is too harsh.

Well done Mint for the NARS! Hope your skin and migraine sort themselves out.

Same for you Enid with the migraine. My mum was a very regular migraine sufferer and at one point they were so awful that she took a preventative tablet everyday. It made a big difference but she didn't want to be on medication long term. Now she just takes a tablet when she feels one coming on and it normally sorts them out. Can't remember the names but am sure a GP will know what I'm talking about. Can ask her if no luck with GP.

Tant, was wondering who BackFlip was!Grin

Bo, why would you not recommend the Medik8 R-retinoate if there are other retinols people can tolerate? Is it because of the price?

mintmagnummm · 14/04/2018 14:55

Tant I was also wondering who the hell is backflip Grin

Tantpoke · 14/04/2018 15:02

Mint, Enid & anyone else that's suffering with migraines - I definitely recommend you look at any potential triggers. I suffer with chronic migraines - I'm not currently working due to them - & I get several severe ones every month despite being on long term preventative medication. What has also helped, has been identifying & removing any triggers (usually foods). Caffeine, citric acid (e.g. certain fruits but also as an additive), blue cheese or mature cheese, MSG, nitrites & nitrates, artificial sweeteners, excess sugar intake, alcohol, soy products - are all fairly common triggers. I believe there are quite a few others. The Migraine Trust, & Migraine Action are both quite helpful with advice on their websites.

Joz* I've tried to find triggers for mine but unfortunately can't figure any out, I know they are definitely worse around ovulation and period time but I also get them frequently other times too. Do you mind me asking what preventative meds you take? I've heard beta blockers are good?

Ollivander84 · 14/04/2018 17:41

Couple of purchases today
LRP moisturiser toleriane ultra
Estée Lauder double wear in she'll

EnidButton · 14/04/2018 17:43

Joz Thank you, that's all really helpful. I'll try to do that and I'll look at those websites. I think they might just be a symptom of the cfs/me in my case, but looking at triggers for them is definitely a good idea.

Hello Olli 👋🏻

mintmagnummm · 14/04/2018 18:11

Yes I think my migraines are fibromyalgia related too, well that's what the gp thinks.

mintmagnummm · 14/04/2018 18:11

Hi olli Smile

mintmagnummm · 14/04/2018 18:12

Are those purchases due to issues with your skin at mo??

TantricTwist · 14/04/2018 18:18

My migraines were triggered by red wine, stress and lack of coffee.

Ollivander84 · 14/04/2018 18:20

No, had just run out of moisturiser and tried a sample of the foundation and loved it!

TantricTwist · 14/04/2018 18:21

I woke up with lovely soft skin this morning after PC BHA and a HA face mask sheet, lying unloved for ages on a bottom shelf. Forgot how nice they can be, followed by LRP toleraine fluide.

SallieSallow · 14/04/2018 18:41

Waves to Olli 👋

Loving the new name Tant Grin

Glad you like the NARS Mint I agree with Tant that it's easier for those of us with yellow skin to get a match, as more foundations seem to pull yellow - I have had the odd one that's been too pink but it's fairly rare.

I've just broken my buying ban and bought a DHC tube mascara. For some unknown reason my usual mascaras (Tarte lights camera lashes and benefit roller lash) have started smudging and giving me panda eyes Confused I do have sensitive eyes and get allergies but those two normally never smudge & my eyes haven't even been stinging, itching or watering so no idea why that's suddenly started happening but it was not a good look. I have pretty decent lashes but like to add a bit of length and definition so hopefully the DHC one will do the job and not leave me looking like a raccoon.

Enid and Mint no advice on migraines (I'm very, very lucky and touch wood have never had one) but I hope you both feel better soon Flowers

TantricTwist · 14/04/2018 19:00

sallie I've just started my buying ban, I went a bit crazy over the Easter holidays but happy that I have everything I need.

Olli 👋

JDSTER · 14/04/2018 22:29

MrsD Grin
mint I hope you like NARS and your skin gets on ok with it.
Tant thankful that you didn’t stick with other name change because I just cannot remember when people change. Actually I do remember Olli was Hollin but that’s it.

mintmagnummm · 15/04/2018 06:57

Olli can you do us a pic wearing the double wear?

mintmagnummm · 15/04/2018 06:57

Ooops where are my manners, please Grin

RosieLig · 15/04/2018 10:36

@botemp- thanks. It does sound good. I don’t seem to have much problem tolerating retinol. I’m using my the Verso eye serum (no results yet) and it’s tingly but fine. Also been using this on my face (not eyes) for a few months every other night but not seeing many effects so keen to try something else

botemp · 15/04/2018 10:51

Seeing thay you've been using the ZO for a good amount of time, which is at the max OTC strength, I'd suggest looking at prescription Tretinoin instead, @RosieLig.

You will need to get it through a dermatologist that sells obagi medical (which is the original obagi brand but not the same as ZO who do not have prescription Tretinoin in their system) or some derms appear to import it from Germany directly under a generic brand name.

RosieLig · 15/04/2018 11:49

@botemp -thank you! The place where I get my treatments is run by a doctor and they do also sell this
zoskinhealth.com/zomedical/brightenex-10#ReviewHeader
Would it be worth getting? I would feel weird going to a dermatologist-we just don’t really have them here. My skin is pretty good (no acne or scarring) it’s just rejuvenating, refining and plumping I’m looking for. Worse area is my eyes. I’m 45.
