Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

I'll try and get a pic of it, won't let me post any photos yet but I'll take one when I've done my makeup Smile

EnidButton · 15/04/2018 13:21

bo How are you doing? Brew

A non relevant to the thread question for everyone, does weight drop off you when you're worried or anxious? This isn't a vague book type post, just wondering if I should be bothered or if it's normal? I needed to lose 5lbs but it's gone in a week with zero effort from having to go to the loo too often

Feel free to ignore, especially if you have issues with food etc but thought I'd ask. Smile

Your skin looks amazing Olli but I think your skin looks always gorgeous regardless of what foundation you use Smile

Enid yes, I lose my appetite with stress and when I was younger I would drop weight really quickly. This late 40s menopausal business seems to have slowed my metabolism to a crawl and it no longer happens now or not to such a great extent. I normally gained the weight back quite quickly once the stress eased and my appetite returned. I don't have the going to the loo side of it but one of my friends does and she got very thin going through her divorce but it settled down and she went back to her normal weight once out the other side. Hope everything is ok Flowers

mintmagnummm · 15/04/2018 16:47

Looks lovely olli

TantricTwist · 15/04/2018 18:26

enid yes stress can cause a lot of things and weight loss is among them. Maybe you're eating food stuff that's diuretic.

olli gorgeous as ever

SallieSallow · 15/04/2018 19:14

Tant was it you that shared those links about cutting your own hair? As I have just done mine (had loads of floofy frizz on the ends that was driving me mad) and it came out fine Smile so I think that could be the end of me and hairdressers unless I decide I want a complete change of style.

EnidButton · 15/04/2018 19:32

Tant and Sallie Ok thank you. That makes sense. I know when I was very anxious a few years ago I ended up slightly underweight but that was because I couldn't keep food down. (It's not going for a pee a lot btw. Tmi. Blush Has settled down tonight thank goodness) I've eaten ok today. In fact don't put your faces too near the screen or you'll be blasted by the smell of garlic mayo breath. Blush

Oh I do sound so attractive today. Grin

SallieSallow · 15/04/2018 20:19

My friend's issue was the same as yours Enid ie not peeing. I just used to lose my appetite to the extent the thought of eating would make me feel sick and I'd heave if I tried to force anything down. I've not been that bad lately, not sure if I'm managing stress better or just don't have as much of it in my life anymore, but I still can't eat much during the day in work if I'm going full pelt. Glad you've managed to eat today and hope you enjoyed the garlic mayo Grin I love garlic but it gives me terrible indigestion sadly Sad

TantricTwist · 15/04/2018 20:27

Sallie yes that was me re hair cutting it's already grown loads since then. So easy isnt it.

Stress can cause your digestive system to kind of shut down to a degree making you not want to eat or digest food so as to concentrate on other more important areas of your body.

TantricTwist · 15/04/2018 20:29

The stress hormone cortisol from the adrenal gland can cause this

TantricTwist · 15/04/2018 20:30

Those of you that have bought items from Easyparapharmacie, how long does it take to arrive? Normally. Approximately?

SallieSallow · 15/04/2018 20:53

Tant my EPP stuff comes within about 5 days usually, sometimes it's been surprisingly faster.

TantricTwist · 15/04/2018 20:57

Ok that's good to know I ordered my stuff on 10.04 so next week hopefully

peonylover22 · 15/04/2018 22:52

Hi everyone, I hope you’ve had nice weekends.
Decided I do like the Biore SPF after all, or at least I like it enough to stick with it during this bottle. I think when I first started it my skin was going a bit crazy after the end of my Lenten chocolate fast, but it seems to have settled down now.
So now I am semi-happy with a SPF, I can move on to actives Grin Parking retinol for the moment as planning to start TTC #2 in next few months, but thought I would give acids a whirl. Skin could do with spot help and anti-ageing help Hmm So I’m thinking of BHA a couple of nights a week and AHA a couple of nights a week. Does that sound sensible?
Any recommendations of products to try? I was thinking Paula’s choice BHA and Nip + Fab glycolic pads? But that’s just because there’s been sufficient hype about them to get on to my radar...

EnidButton · 16/04/2018 02:08

Sallie and Tant Thank you both. Flowers Hoping it will settle down now. Being able to eat really helps

Very impressed with your hair cutting bravery btw Sallie I might brave cutting my own fringe soon. Might. Grin

TantricTwist · 16/04/2018 03:41

enid obvs if you are worried and keep losing weight then yes of course go and see your GP Flowers You know body better than anyone.

botemp · 16/04/2018 09:15

Not that great tbh, Enid.

@RosieLig if the place where you go to is run by a doctor then it's probably best to consult them for your next step, it's not just dermatologists who can prescribe Tretinoin so I'm sure they'd be able to/and or advice whether 1% is a better choice. For a 1% concentration I usually suggest looking at the SkinCeuticals or Paula's Choice versions, I'm personally not overly keen on some of the ingredients used in ZO but you seem to be tolerating them fine so less of a concern for you personally in that sense.

Oh Bo yes, you've been fairly quiet recently. I hope you feel better soon Flowers everything ok?

TantricTwist · 16/04/2018 10:21

BO is it still your low BP, have they sorted it out yet? Found out what's happening?

EnidButton · 16/04/2018 12:10

Flowers bo

Jozxyqk · 16/04/2018 14:30

Bo - hope you manage to get to the bottom of whatever is causing you to feel unwell soon. I've had a quick skim through the thread & have realised that I didn't actually get back to you properly about the BR P50, apologies for that. My old tablet was on the blink & lost a couple of posts that I thought had gone onto the thread - have finally got a replacement. Also I think the recent weather has been contributing to my migraines as I don't usually get as many as I did over the last month.

Mint - I have fairly regular hemiplegic migraines, unfortunately, so I'm on Topamax. Before I started on it I was having at least a couple of fairly serious attacks every month. I'm not sure if they use it for other types of migraine though & TBH the side effects are so unpleasant I wouldn't recommend it unless you've no alternative. I also take amitriptyline on prescription as I get a lot of ongoing nerve pain. I also buy (with the support of my doctor) vitamin B complex & magnesium, which help a bit & both supposedly helpful in various types of migraine. Since I had DD 6 years ago I've also been getting some kind of hormonal migraines, which the doctor can't medicate me for - as the usual medication would be triptans - which are dangerous to a hemiplegic migraine sufferer. I can't take beta blockers as I'm quite badly asthmatic, but I've heard they can be quite good. I'm waiting for a referral for possible botox injections, but I have to be able to manage with no painkillers for ages first, so they can be sure it's not all caused by rebound headaches. They are slowly getting worse, I assume its a "time of life" thing, as it all completely vanished when I was pregnant - bliss! Hopefully it will vanish again when I hit menopause but the doctor says that's years off, I'm only 37.
It's definitely worth persisting with a trigger diary. You may find that you can tolerate certain things only when you are otherwise in good health, well rested, not premenstrual & not feeling otherwise vulnerable to a migraine. For several years I could tolerate caffeine under those circumstances - now I'm finding that I even have to severely limit my chocolate intake, & can only tolerate it after a meal.

I was on the thread about what people have bought as a result of MN the other day... I've bought loads. But in terms of the number of individual & ongoing purchases, these threads have definitely been the biggest factor in influencing my spending. And my skin is (and I am) so much happier.

peonylover22 · 16/04/2018 14:43

Sorry you’re feeling so rubbish Bo Flowers
I have just had a happy little lunchtime session in the premium skincare aisle at my local Boots which I’d popped into to get nappies. I’m going to sound like a total moron here but I didn’t realise that Boots stocked Vichy, LRP etc. I thought you were all buying it online! I got the nip + fab glycolic pads and a Vichy eye serum. And it was FREE because I seemed to have amassed loads of points (buying nappies Hmm)

mintmagnummm · 16/04/2018 14:53

Joz I get migraine attacks very frequently too, around 2 a month bad ones and most days I get the pain over my eye which either progresses into an attack or stays as it is it's draining. I'm also on amitriptyline for nerve pain and to help me sleep, do you mind me asking what dose of this you take and at what time you take it?

Bo 💐

Jozxyqk · 16/04/2018 15:11

Can't remember the dose but it's at night. Definitely helps with the sleep as long as I remember to go up & take it a little while before bedtime. I usually do that at the same time as pyjamas, face washing & BHA if using it that night. Then leave half hour & do the rest of my routine, teeth etc. I also try to make sure I drink plenty of water or a calming herbal tea straight before bed - I know it sounds counterproductive but I always felt more refreshed if I was really hydrated for sleep. Anything up to half a pint. It only works if I can get straight to sleep though... If I'm awake more than 15 mins it's definitely unhelpful!
