Should I buy a velvet blazer?

I am lusting after a black velvet blazer in the Massimo Dutti sale. It’s beautiful. But I’m a bit confused about velvet... Coukd I wear it out in the evening in spring / summer or will I look ridiculous? If so, will it still be fashionable next winter or have I missed the velvet boat?

I would.

I absolutely love a jacket and jeans or trousers and I think it’s a look that won’t date.

Mulberrysilk · 17/03/2018 21:56

I wouldn't wear it in summer but it sounds like a classic that's worth having in your wardrobe.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 17/03/2018 22:01

I think it's a nice basic to have, but I would worry about attracting fluff. Maybe not?

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2018 22:01

The one I can see on their site on sale is navy and is very classic so can be worn during the day as well as evening,

peonylover22 · 17/03/2018 22:06

Oh my goodness. It IS navy! So carried away by the idea of myself in it that I didn’t look at the colour properly 🙄 This changes everything! Although I also really like navy...

Not sure about velvet but a blazer is an essential wardrobe item...I had a phase of seeing friends looking really well dressed and took a while till the penny dropped that it was the blazer I was admiring

peonylover22 · 17/03/2018 22:14

Blazer is definitely an essential. Tbh I think I’m better off focusing on current search for perfect navy wool blazer (to replace perfect navy wool blazer that pesky cats have ruined) than going off on velvet tangent Blush

It’s lovely, I’m glad they don’t have my size 😆. I’m slightly lusting after the pink linen one now I’ve had a look , although no idea what I would wear it with.

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2018 22:18

I think it being navy makes it more modern and wearable. Black velvet is a bit old fashioned now. It is lovely and a great price.

peonylover22 · 17/03/2018 22:27

Really wavering now. I am also considering this wool blazer from MD (strong blazer offering at the moment 😂)

I tried it on in store today. It was nearly perfect. Fabric good, length good, cut good. BUT I’m not sure about the buttons - too shiny? Too preppy? Also it doesn’t do up. Is this an issue...?

I bought my husband what I thought would be a nice dark green velvet blazer in the New Year sales (he likes green). It came, he tried it on and instantly looked like an 80s snooker player! No more velvet blazers in our house.

peonylover22 · 17/03/2018 22:31

Snooker player not exactly the look I’m going for 😂
@timeisnotaline the pink linen blazer is also really lovely. Get it!

Yes, I didn’t buy a muted pink
Velvet blazer I saw in Topshop a few months ago. It haunts me.

Kochicoo · 18/03/2018 08:11

OP I love that navy wool one. I think those buttons are probably slightly more subtle than a lot of the ones out there at the moment but the bright ones are "in" cause they're like that Balmain one. (think it's Balmain). You can always change the buttons next year if the rest of it is perfect. I never button blazers up and think they're like biker jackets - look better undone. But if you're having to talk yourself into it and didn't immediately feel great in it, maybe you just need the velvet one!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 18/03/2018 08:15

I like the navy one, is it a bit too long line though or is it a bit deceptive because the model is wearing high waisted trousers?

Love the buttons, you could always change them.

Bluntness100 · 18/03/2018 08:21

I prefer the velvet one I have to say. It's really elegant looking and a better shape.

peonylover22 · 18/03/2018 08:51

Navy wool blazer snapped in store yesterday- I’m tall so I think the length is right for me. No sign of the velvet one in store so couldn’t do a comparison

I should add that in addition to the above wool blazer and velvet blazer I am contemplating this embellished cardigan (again from Massimo Dutti 😂) www.massimodutti.com/gb/women/sweaters-%26-cardigans/cardigans/embellished-cardigan-with-frayed-detail-c911190p8064048.html?colorId=800&parentId=8064152

You can never miss the velvet boat, it's classic.

This thread reminds me of the black velvet blazer I wore to my graduation. Wish I could still fit into it. Navy velvet is even better than black velvet for a blazer! Smile

Floisme · 18/03/2018 10:39

I think the navy velvet one is lovely but then I would say that as I've got one (not MD - second hand). It got me through Christmas and New Year and I've been suprised at how useful it's been since then too.

I'm still nervous about calling it - or anything else - 'classic'. Velvet comes in and out of fashion and when it's 'out', it really does look all kinds of wrong. That said, its not normally a one-season thing so I think it'll be around for a while yet.

I like the Chanel-esque cardigan too, less keen on the wool one but that's because the shape wouldn't suit me.

FireandBrimstone · 18/03/2018 10:40

Velvet one is GORGEOUS! Can't think that's a buy anyone would ever regret.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 18/03/2018 11:05

The navy one looks perfect on you!

CallarMorvern · 18/03/2018 11:26

Love, love the velvet. I'm not keen on the buttons on the wool, mainly because I'm not a gold fan, but it is a lovely fit on you.

Dandellion · 18/03/2018 13:09

I have been hunting for a grey, thin, soft velvet blazer for the last 2 years after seeing Kate Moss rocking one with jeans, biker boots and a plain white t-shirt.

timeisnotaline · 18/03/2018 13:31

The navy wool I would prefer more discreet buttons. I’m not tall so might not work for me. What are the fits like?
Still covering that pink linen!! But at 7 months pregnant it would have to be a sale purchase given I won’t fit into it for probably 10 months!!
