Do you have white gold or platinum wedding rings and do you regret it?

I had yellow gold back when everyone had yellow gold, but really regret it now as everything else I wear is silver-coloured Confused.

I would like to replace them and ‘upgrade’ to platinum rings, but for the same size diamond as I’ve currently got-I think we’re looking at many many thousands!?

Does anyone have white gold jewellery and is happy with it? Or do you regret it as you have to get it rhodium plated?

My engagement and wedding rings are gold and I didn't regret the choice. However, after baby number three I developed an allergy to my wedding ring and had to stop wearing it. So for a few years I wore a 9ct diamond ring DH bought me after ds2 instead. Recently DH has bought me replacement wedding and engagement rings that match my originals, in platinum because in theory I won't be allergic to them!

Interestingly, it made me realise that actually, it's ok to replace/remodel/not wear the original rings because although they are the ones you commit with, they are just a symbol of your commitment, I was just as married to DH in the years I didn't (couldn't) wear my original rings, as when I could wear them. I might feel differently if they'd been lost though, and I still wear my engagement ring alongside another ring sometimes, but my wedding ring is a no no as it makes me itch so much.

yellow gold is definitely back in fashion so I'd embrace it

I didn't know there were fashions in the colour of gold - I thought it was just down to which one suited your colouring and/or personality. I'm a silver person and I always will be.

I’m surprised by people saying it costs £1.5k to get a diamond reset. You’re obviously paying too much. Resetting a diamond etc in a new setting/ band should not cost over £1k. A competitively priced jeweller with high turnover will have plenty of empty settings in stock/ easy to order. You need to go to a hub to get best price - Birmingham or Hatton garden in London - or a popular local jeweller. As I understand it they buys in empty settings and fill them with stones in their workshop or a hub workshop

If you want bespoke- ie made from scratch to your chosen design it will cost you dear, yes. But most people probably won’t need to go bespoke as a good Jeweller with give lots of choice of settings (possibly also if your stone is an unusual size/shape).

A local naice jeweller quoted four times the price for a diamond that a HG made for me. It was the exact same spec and the insurance quote was a fair bit over what we paid. I guess they don’t sell many diamonds each week, so their mark up is much higher.

I can’t quite believe jewellers like this are still in business but i guess many people don’t understand value for money when it comes to jewellery.

I’d expect to pay about £200-300 + labour for gold / palladium (so £400/500 depending on work involvedh and £500-700 for platinum (so could be up to £1k).

Platinum stays silver coloured and doesn't dint or bend, it's very strong. White gold is yellow gold with silver plate and it tarnishes over time. Also it's softer. If you can, I would go for platinum, although it's more expensive.

Have been doing a bit if reading up in this, as I was sure my white gold wedding ring has not been plated. It was never a shiny morrow finish bright silver.
Anyway on reading...it depends on the alloy that is used in the gold. Nickel or palladium for white, or copper and silver for yellow. The link below is quite informative and gives links to jewellers who sell unplated gold.

Apologies for the typos, wish there was an edit button.

@Appuskidu in the West Midlands. We went to a small independent jeweller. He also made my wedding ring for £190, also in palladium. We already had the stones and chose a design from the catalogue to have them set into.

It's a beautiful medium silver colour, not very, very white. It was much more shiny when we first had it, but it has scuffed and turned into a lovely pattina over time (6 years now)

Make sure you get hallmarked and 950 weight Palladium, not 500. I'd highly recommend an independent jeweller or somewhere in the jewellery quarter (London, or Birmingham)

ItsAllDoomAndGloom · 23/03/2018 15:50

I need a ring resizing and white gold plating, can anyone recommend somewhere in London to do this? Don't know where to start?!

moonmaker · 23/03/2018 17:02

I have white gold and never regretted it I absolutely love it

HildaZelda · 23/03/2018 17:29

I have yellow gold too and I don't like them. They're just so dated looking now. I did look into getting them dipped but I don't think it would last that long.

madspala · 02/08/2018 03:44

I have a platinum 950 alloyed with iridium (the softer one) and it looks awesome. It starting to patina a tiny bit on the underside. It’s still super shiny though.
I don’t like the weight though. I never wore jewelry and still don’t besides my e-ring.. but I tried on my friends white gold e ring and was so jealous of how light it was.
Mine is a oval halo with diamonds over 3/4ths of the band so with all the prongs holding the diamonds in the halo and band together, platinum was supposed to be the best choice to protect the diamonds.. We shall see how I feel about adding the weight of a plat wedding band to it as well:/

NancyBlackettsRedCap · 02/08/2018 06:14

White gold that has lasted fine for 21 years here. Didn't know it often needed replating.

theunsure · 02/08/2018 06:19

Mine are platinum, no regrets so far (5 years in).
I wasn’t keen on white gold for rings I don’t take off because of the maintenance but most of my other jewellery is white gold.

theunsure · 02/08/2018 06:27

Meant to add that DH has Palladium and it looks just like my platinum rings but was much cheaper. It is lighter, but I preferred the weight.

badlydrawncat · 02/08/2018 17:40

White gold engagement and wedding ring, neither have ever had plating or anything else done to them. I never take them off either. The engagement ring is 44 years old and the wedding ring 42 years.

Do you have white gold or platinum wedding rings and do you regret it?
JMAngel1 · 02/08/2018 18:19

I have a platinum emerald cut engagement ring with a yellow gold diamond set wedding ring - I love the silver and yellow combo so I suppose what I'm saying is don't worry about mixing your metals - I think it looks cool. I'm actually thinking about a rose gold eternity ring to really mix it up!
