Do you have white gold or platinum wedding rings and do you regret it?

I had yellow gold back when everyone had yellow gold, but really regret it now as everything else I wear is silver-coloured Confused.

I would like to replace them and ‘upgrade’ to platinum rings, but for the same size diamond as I’ve currently got-I think we’re looking at many many thousands!?

Does anyone have white gold jewellery and is happy with it? Or do you regret it as you have to get it rhodium plated?

I had a white gold ring which started to look a bit yellowish after a while. If I had my time again, I'd chose silver (or platinum if I could afford) but now divorced and don't wear it anymore.

Hohofortherobbers · 25/02/2018 19:47

I love the look and the weight of my platinum ring. But tbh my dh's palladium ring looks identical

bringonyourwreckingball · 25/02/2018 19:51

I have white gold - I had mine replated when it was 10 years old as needed resizing and DH bought me a matching eternity ring. No regrets, couldn’t afford platinum at the time but also wasn’t much one for jewellery so was unsure how much I would wear them.

BlueEyedWonder · 25/02/2018 20:11

DH and I have platinum wedding rings. We’ve been married 17 years this year and both still love them

BadTasteFlump · 25/02/2018 20:17

I have a platinum wedding & engagement ring and love them. I don't worry about everything matching though - I have a gold ring set with a ruby which I also wear, I think gold & silver go together well anyway.

I would stick with your gold ring. I had a white gold ring which over the years turned a vague yellowy colour which doesn't look very nice - I wouldn't buy white gold again.

MadameBronte · 25/02/2018 20:18

My engagement and wedding rings are both platinum. We had the very best quality we could afford because I didn't want to ever have to take them off. I haven't removed them in 15 years, except in the last week of pregnancy when my fingers swelled, and they still look stunning.

They're not quite as shiney as when brand new, but then I much prefer things that 'wear in' rather than things which just wear out Smile

TittyGolightly · 25/02/2018 20:20

I rarely wear any of it but all of my jewellery is platinum now, having discovered that I am extremely allergic to white gold and having to have my newly re-plated wedding and engagement rings cut off me.

I sold the gold back to the jeweller that made them and paid for the platinum. The diamonds were already platinum set so they just made new bands for them.

I can’t bear yellow gold. It doesn’t suit me.

MintTpls · 25/02/2018 20:28

I have white gold wedding ring and platinum engagement.
I didn't realise you could get them sorted back to original colour, may I ask how much that would cost please?

HildaZelda · 25/02/2018 20:28

Mine are yellow gold and I hate them. They look so dated. I don't wear them that often as pretty much everything else I have is silver. I'm debating getting them dipped.

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 25/02/2018 20:31

My dh got me yellow gold when he proposed. I would have chosen white myself but I'm actually really pleased now - I like how traditional it looks, and currently a bit unusual.

DH got unplated white gold as he didn't like the shine of platinum but didn't want yellow. It's lovely - sort of a soft silvery colour with a hint of yellow. It never needs plating and really suits him. Another option maybe?

MrsFionaCharming · 25/02/2018 20:39

Rhodium plated is no good if you work in healthcare or similar as it is damaged by alcohol hand gel and will need replating a lot.

I love my white gold engagement ring, and have been told that you should match metals so one doesn’t damage the other. So I’ll have a white gold with diamonds wedding ring for weekends / best, and a plain silver band for work.

StellaWouldYouTakeMeHome · 25/02/2018 20:57

I don’t regret our wedding rings at all both my partner and I have gold and platinum in them so they would match. It’s about what they mean to you nothing else

FrannySalinger · 25/02/2018 21:02

I have platinum engagement and wedding rings and I absolutely love them. Gold doesn't suit my skin tone and these work far better with the silver jewellery I wear alongside them.

Liz38 · 25/02/2018 21:05

Platinum engagement ring (15 years), wedding ring (13 years) and eternity ring (8 years), all in beautiful condition despite being worn all the time regardless of what I'm doing. I didn't choose platinum, i didn't want yellow gold as i don't like it and never wear it but was told that the ring i liked was white gold. They told me all about replating and how to look after it and when we ordered it said ' actually, it's platinum not white gold'. Which was a bit of a bonus!

ToftheB · 25/02/2018 21:08

I always preferred yellow gold rings because my mum has a beautiful soft, deep gold wedding band that’s made from my grandmas and great aunts wedding rings combined. I think it’s more than 18 carat (is that even possible? Perhaps I’m remembering wrong...)

Instead I fell in love with an antique white gold engagement ring, and had my wedding band made to match. They’re both 18 carat and I’ve worn them every day for a good few years and they don’t need re dipping yet. I think high quality white gold lasts well and has a nice tone to it.

Do you have white gold or platinum wedding rings and do you regret it?
keepingbees · 25/02/2018 21:12

Could you have your yellow gold ring dipped and made white?
I avoided white gold as I didn't want the faff of getting it dipped every few years.
I have a platinum engagement ring which is great as it's hard wearing and weighty. Only downside is I need it resizing now and being an expensive metal it will be expensive.
My wedding ring is palladium which is as good as platinum but cheaper.

Do the palladium and platinum look ok together? Are they a similar hardness so don’t wear each other down? Is the palladium very lightweight? Sorry-that was lots of questions!

I think there are different qualities of white gold, so how 'yellow' it goes depends on the mix of yellow gold with other metals. I've got 2 white gold rings - one looks silver still, but the other went yellow really quickly and replating lasted less than a year.
I'd get the stones of your existing ring reset into platinum.

orangesticker · 25/02/2018 21:39

I have platinum engagement and wedding ring, dh has a mixture of white gold and platinum - the two colours make the design, we are married 18 years. I wouldn't replace mine - even if I lost them, or to update. My rings are sentimental and remind me of who we were and the journey we have been through - a new ring would be meaningless.

DryWhiteagainW · 25/02/2018 21:48

All my jewellery is yellow gold and I love it. It suits my colouring and it’s back in fashion now. I love it.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 25/02/2018 21:57

You can make gold into lots of different colours by adding different chemicals to the mix. Only unadulterated yellow gold can be 24 carat; anything a different colour is obviously less pure. The addition of nickel is why some people are allergic to it. There are some cool effects from surface treating and then heating it too, like a bluish colour.

Palladium is slightly harder than platinum on the Mohs scale so Pd is less scratchable than Pt.

ForkIt · 25/02/2018 22:15

I’m clearly out the loop in the white gold replaying thing! I’ve worn mine 11 years and it looks the same as always. Quite shiny even

mummytooneprincess · 25/02/2018 22:17

I have a white gold engagement ring and a palladium wedding ring. My engagement ring has worn very thin at the back and discolours so have had it re dipped a couple of times. Really wish they were both palladium (my husband chose my engagement ring not realising it wasn't very hard wearing, I am a nurse so chose a palladium wedding ring as I knew white gold wouldn't hold up to the hibiscrub etc) I had a price for re making my engagement ring in palladium (using my current diamonds) and it was approx £1500. It appears palladium is currently more expensive than platinum!

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 25/02/2018 22:20

I had the emerald from my grandma's yellow gold engagement ring reset in my platinum engagement ring.

That way you would get to keep the stone. Lots of jewellers do remodelling.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 25/02/2018 22:24

Alternatively, you could just your yellow gold dipped.
