Do you have white gold or platinum wedding rings and do you regret it?

I had yellow gold back when everyone had yellow gold, but really regret it now as everything else I wear is silver-coloured Confused.

I would like to replace them and ‘upgrade’ to platinum rings, but for the same size diamond as I’ve currently got-I think we’re looking at many many thousands!?

Does anyone have white gold jewellery and is happy with it? Or do you regret it as you have to get it rhodium plated?

Mine are palladium. Look the same as platinum and no need for replating, the only difference is the weight. I have other platinum rings and can't tell the difference by eye. Palladium is way way cheaper and much more readily available now - I have a wedding ring, engagement and eternity rings in it.

I've been wearing my white gold engagement ring for 18 years and it's only a touch yellow on the underside. Hardly notices.

My white gold and diamond wedding ring is 10 years old and isn't discoloured at all.

Madmarchpear · 25/02/2018 22:31

Mine are platinum with a solitaire diamond very generic and a tad chav and I feel very self conscious about them. I find younger more hip types go for vintage, coloured stones and better quality richer yellow gold bands. My combo feels very 2002. Is it terrible to re-buy in line with current trends?

branstonbaby · 25/02/2018 22:35

I have a platinum wedding band, DH has the same. 16 years and no regrets

BluebellGal · 25/02/2018 22:36

Can recommend Katz in Hatton garden for resetting diamonds. It’s the least fancy of all shops there and seem to trade on reputation. Do a good job at a competitive price.

Appuskidu · 25/02/2018 22:39

I had a price for re making my engagement ring in palladium (using my current diamonds) and it was approx £1500

OMG-is that the sort of price!?

I was imagining a few hundred. If it’s that expensive, I will buy a new ring.

I have platinum engagement and wedding ring. If I get an eternity ring down the line it'll be platinum as well. All very plain and simple. DH has a palladium wedding ring. I love my rings.
I don't wear a lot of other jewellery, a small silver necklace day-to-day but going out I wear a gold watch, layered gold necklaces, gold earrings and a gold ring on my right hand. I'm fine with the mixed metals, tbh. Most of my stuff is costume jewellery, but I'm planning on upgrading it over the next few years, I'm still torn on whether to get silver or gold.

Agree with others that if you no longer love your rings cause they're yellow gold then get them dipped.

Remaking a ring will be around £1000 plus. If it’s bespoke, handmade, it will be more. Obviously 18ct gold is cheaper then platinum. If stones are sentimental it’s worth it, but otherwise you can start again. A few hundred £ it won’t be!

flumpybear · 25/02/2018 22:56

Platinum wedding and engagement ..... love them!

White gold eternity ring, not white so gorgeous ,,, different hand btw

C0untDucku1a · 25/02/2018 23:06

I also had a yellow gold engagement ring dipped so it sould match my platinum rings. Cost about £30

Can I asked ask how long it lasted-did it look good?

Do you have a photo?!

I had it dipped 5 years ago when i discovered that was possible. Beforebthat it had been sat in a box for years and years. Unworn and unloved. It needs doing again though now. I dont have a photo Atm. Im in bed.

Mine was custom made and cost just £400 to have both rings - one is 5mm wide - remade in platinum. I sold them back the gold and bought the platinum at wholesale rate. A good relationship with a jeweller is key to this sort of stuff.

My wedding ring is silver which is my favorite precious metal. It always looks lovely and hasn’t needed any kind of “care” in nearly 22 years.

Bisquitine · 25/02/2018 23:55

@purpleprincess24 that website has some beautiful pieces. I'd never heard of tension rings before, and now I really really want one.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 26/02/2018 07:46

Silver is a good idea if platinum is too expensive. People say it isn't as durable but I've never had any problems with it - most of my jewellery is silver.

palmfronds · 26/02/2018 07:56

I'm surprised at all these people saying yellow gold isn't back in fashion yet - it definitely is! I'm just sorting out my engagement and wedding rings at the moment and will be getting yellow gold, white metal looks very dated to me. But of course it depends on your skin tone and personal preference anyway, I can't imagine stopping wearing my rings just because they're not trendy!

AbsolutelyCorking · 26/02/2018 08:11

Yellow gold is in fashion, it has never gone out of fashion. If we’re talking what’s trendy right now it’s rose gold, not white gold. So don’t worry about the fashions too much! I’m very pale and yellow gold suits me as well as white gold.

Silver and gold both wear. A wedding ring worn daily for 30+ years will wear away. Not so with platinum.

NameChange30 · 26/02/2018 08:14

Not all white gold is the same. White gold is made from a mix of gold and palladium to make it white, and if it has a lower palladium content it will need rhodium plating, but if it has a higher palladium content it won’t.

credjewellery.com/blogs/news/14531865-white-gold-vs-platinum

My engagement and wedding rings are white gold with no rhodium plating (high palladium content) and they are still the same beautiful silver colour as when I got them 4-5 years ago. I would describe it as a “warm” silver whereas platinum is a more “cold” silver IYSWIM.

Lots of white gold contains nickel.

KochabRising · 26/02/2018 08:19

I’m also surprised at the idea of fashion for these. You’re (hopefully) going to wear it for decades - pick something you love rather than a trendy piece

PavlovaPrincess · 26/02/2018 08:24

Have only skim read the thread but I used to work in a jewellers and in all honesty, I wouldn't bother having your yellow gold rings plated as it only lasts two minutes (I had one of mine done to match my engagement ring and it lasted weeks). It's bad enough on white gold, but on yellow gold it's almost pointless.

As someone else said though, yellow gold is definitely back in fashion so I'd embrace it.

sprinkleofsunshine · 26/02/2018 08:26

I have platinum engagement and wedding bands and absolutely love them. Wedding band was pretty readable so definitely worth it imo.
