Do you have white gold or platinum wedding rings and do you regret it?

I had yellow gold back when everyone had yellow gold, but really regret it now as everything else I wear is silver-coloured Confused.

I would like to replace them and ‘upgrade’ to platinum rings, but for the same size diamond as I’ve currently got-I think we’re looking at many many thousands!?

Does anyone have white gold jewellery and is happy with it? Or do you regret it as you have to get it rhodium plated?

I think it was £25 for the rhodium plating but I had them re-sized at the same time and paid £65 in total for each ring. I had three done. I've attached a photo of one of them, this looks the most different as the entire setting and shank are hello gold underneath.

Oops yellow not hello!

Margomyhero · 25/02/2018 16:57

Yes.

I have white gold e ring as wedding ring.

I had no idea that they would need to be replated regularly when i chose them. If I had known I would have gone for platinum.

My engagement ring is from a high st jewellers and seems to lose it's bright white shine more quickly than my wedding ring which was purchased from an independent. So I guess the quality of the original must play a part.

I did get them done annually (just prior to wedding anniversary) but skipped a year and they look ok. Not as bright as they should but wearable.

Platinum engagement and wedding rings, decade-and-a-half later and they still look fine.

scaredofthecity · 25/02/2018 17:00

I had my wedding ring made in an independent jewellers and they use a higher quality of white gold that doesn't need replating. After nearly 5 years it still looks ok, whilst my engagement ring is pretty yellow and definately needs doing.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 25/02/2018 17:00

My wedding ring is white gold, I've never even heard of replating and it's still the same colour it was 20 years ago. I never wear yellow gold.

chiruri · 25/02/2018 17:00

I have a palladium engagement ring (essentially the same as platinum) and a rose gold wedding ring. I love the unusual combination, and means I can get away with either white-coloured or warmer jewellery.

Margo you might have a point there. My white gold ring was from an excellent independent jeweller and the plating it came with lasted well for years. Since I've been having it re-done it never looks good for more than 18 months or so. Sadly they are too far away for me to go back there now.

Wow-so, that was yellow gold before? How long ago was it done when the photo wasn’t taken? Did they say how long it would last?

Always - sorry if I'm being a bit thick but you had yellow gold ones rhodium plated and resized? And they are now "silver"?

I need to do this with two rings. I'm guessing by the prices you are not in London... Sad don't really know where to start finding someone to do it.

StarsBrokenAgain · 25/02/2018 17:02

Love that chiruri!

wewentoutonsunday · 25/02/2018 17:02

18ct whirled gold here. 10 yrs wedding ring, 11 yrs engagement. No sign of wearing or discolouration.

My engagement ring is white gold and I've wore it everyday for 6 years. Never take it off and it's still silver in colour and has never been re-plated

SouthWestmom · 25/02/2018 17:03

I hated mine so much - rhodium played white gold.

FairfaxAikman · 25/02/2018 17:06

We have platinum- harder wearing than gold and doesn't need replating every few years

BirdyBedtime · 25/02/2018 17:07

My wedding and engagement rings are both white gold but neither were originally plated so they look more 'gold' than silver but definitely not as yellow as yellow gold IYSWIM. Absolutely no regrets.

MimsyBorogroves · 25/02/2018 17:08

Platinum wedding and eternity ring here. I love them, and 7 and 6 years on they're still perfect.

My engagement ring is silver, but it's a plain band that DH used to wear. It's on my right hand now to avoid being damaged.

mintbiscuit · 25/02/2018 17:10

I have platinum for both as white gold isn't as hard wearing (White gold is ok for occasional wear for me)

Palladium is a lot cheaper than platinum but v similar finish and hard wearing. So might be better alternative for you? DH has palladium wedding band and no probs so far with it.

chiruri · 25/02/2018 17:11

@StarsBrokenAgain thank you Smile
Engagement ring is 7 years old, worn every day. I would thoroughly recommend looking at palladium as it’s cheaper than platinum and as it’s naturally white it doesn’t require plating.

chiruri · 25/02/2018 17:12

X-post with @mintbiscuit

Alwaysfrank · 25/02/2018 17:13

Yes, I am in London! Used an old fashioned local jeweller, not a chain. This is all very recent so I'm about three weeks in. It may only last 4 or 5 months but we shall see! I'm told palladium plating lasts a lot longer (5 year's?) but costs more. This was an experiment really. If I like the white look I may well go palladium when they need re-doing.

Alwaysfrank · 25/02/2018 17:14

Sorry about the stray apostrophe- blame the iPad!

holasoydora · 25/02/2018 17:21

I have yellow gold rings. I also wear silver other jewellery and am pale! The wedding ring was my Gran's so I chose an antique engagement ring. I love them. I'd stick with what you've got! Grin

bookbook · 25/02/2018 17:25

All my rings are white gold - engagement ring is 44 years old, wedding ring 43 years old, eternity ring 37 years old. Never done anything with them , never taken off - they are rather scratched and battered like me, but thats life :)
