Do you have white gold or platinum wedding rings and do you regret it?

I had yellow gold back when everyone had yellow gold, but really regret it now as everything else I wear is silver-coloured Confused.

I would like to replace them and ‘upgrade’ to platinum rings, but for the same size diamond as I’ve currently got-I think we’re looking at many many thousands!?

Does anyone have white gold jewellery and is happy with it? Or do you regret it as you have to get it rhodium plated?

I have a platinum engagement and palladium wedding ring. The metals are so similar I can't tell the difference. They both wear similarly I.e. the initial shine scratches to a soft duller sheen, but can be repolished if preferred (I had my engagement ring repolished when we got married so they would both be shiny). I don't like the feel of thick band of rings so my wedding band is pretty narrow, in palladium it cost just over £100 to be made to size.

It's really tricky to take photos of your own hands with a phone camera!

Mine are platinum. I thought they were still in great nick, but compared them to a recently engaged friend on Friday and mind have gone quite dark. They just need a polish though. They aren’t worn badly.
I’ve barely taken them off in seven years.

westridingpauperlunaticasylum · 26/02/2018 09:01

Look at palladium - as bright and shiny as platinum but a fraction of the cost. Very hard wearing too. No one will be able to tell the difference

Seriouslyscrewed · 26/02/2018 09:10

I decided on yellow gold and I love mine. Everyone has white gold or platinum and I didn't want to be the same. Plus the gold suits me so much better.

it should be about what you want and how you feel not what everyone else has.

Silvertap · 26/02/2018 09:15

Mine are white gold and I've just had them rhodium plated after 7 years. It was £40 for both wedding band and engagement ring.

I'm a farmer so didn't want to be wearing something for multiple thousands on my finger when mucking out the pigs. It was the right decision for me and I certainly don't notice it on a daily basis

Silvertap · 26/02/2018 09:19

Here's mine after being replated

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 26/02/2018 09:21

Very pretty rings on here. Love the coloured stone with white gold

Appuskidu · 26/02/2018 09:32

Thank you for the great replies! Those who have showed photos -that’s been brilliant.

For those of you saying things like ‘it should be about what you want and how you feel not what everyone else has’ or don’t follow the fashion.

I don’t think I am thinking about what everyone else has or the fashion. I just always wished I had gone for a silver colour-that’s all!

I didn’t mean ‘you’ as in you personally ;) more the generic ‘you’ as in people generally should go for what they want (as you are now doing.) No criticism at all!

Also enjoyed looking at everyone’s rings :)

sameoldtat · 26/02/2018 09:47

I have just left my wedding ring to be replated at local jewellers and he only charged me fifteen pounds. But that's in the North West.

Appuskidu · 26/02/2018 10:02

No no offence taken Smile-I just wanted to explain. It’s not a fashion thing, just a me thing :)

It sounds like having a yellow gold ring rhodium plated is going to only last a few months so think that’s out. I will enquire about having it reset in platinum but if it’s more than about £400, I think that I just won’t go there, and will probably look at getting a whole new ring.

Only thing is - and this may just be me - I wouldn't ever want to change my engagement/wedding rings as much for their sentimental value as anything else. They are the actual rings put on my finger on my wedding day, so to me are irreplaceable.

susurration · 26/02/2018 11:13

I had my white gold engagement ring reset as palladium. It cost £250 to reset the original diamonds and sapphire into the new band.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 26/02/2018 11:53

Mine are both platinum and I love them. Never taken them off or needed to do anything to them (the jewellers write to us yearly to remind me to have them cleaned at their shop, never remembered to do it yet).

DH lost his wedding ring in our garden years ago. It matched my wedding ring and if I'm honest, I'm a bit brutal because I think the one we bought as a replacement isn't an actual wedding ring as it's not the one we said our vows with and just doesn't mean as much. So I wouldn't swap mine of alter them because the whole point is that they're the rings we chose to commit with.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 26/02/2018 12:08

If you’re concerned about price, check out palladium.

It’s rather than gold or platinum, hard wearing and silver. Just hasn’t had the advertising clout if platinum.

Many jewellers offer it.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 26/02/2018 12:10

We are not the type to do things cheaply - we like good quality things. But our palladium rings have held up brilliantly and are a no-brainer.

Thebluedog · 26/02/2018 12:13

I take my white gold ring in about once every 18 months and for about £40 they replate it, and it looks amazing. You could always get your yellow rings white gold plated. A friend of mine did this and they look like brand new again.

Wow-that is a good price! Whereabouts are you in the country?

Can I ask how you find the colour and weight of palladium?

DonkeyExplosion · 26/02/2018 12:36

I got engaged recently and wanted platinum. Aside from the colour, I like how it will develop a strong patina, but without the metal degrading or wearing thin. There's a comforting weight to it as well, which I'd miss with gold or palladium. My wedding band will be plain platinum too.

chiruri · 26/02/2018 13:05

@Appuskidu here’s a pic of my palladium engagement ring next to my rose gold wedding ring for colour comparison (sorry, don’t have platinum to compare). It’s 7 years old and hasn’t been professionally cleaner or polished, and worn 24/7. It is lighter than my wedding ring but thinner, but still feels sturdy and not like costume jewellery. I deliberately wanted a very find band, so thicker would have more weight. I would thoroughly recommend it as a metal. Everyone assumes it’s platinum.

Givemestrengthorgin · 26/02/2018 13:08

I have platinum and love them. 9 years in and bore the brunt of lots of knocks and scrapes and come out unscathed.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 26/02/2018 13:10

My original post should say - palladium is RARER (not rather!) than platinum.

The colour of palladium does deepen, but not to the extent of platinum - however, it doesn’t look cheap and shiny. There is a visual difference between the outsideand he inside of my ring after years of wear.

It is light. If you want a v weighty ring, it’s not for you. You do consciously have to put away (mis)conceptions about what precious jewellery feels like. For me, it’s great because I don’t really wear rings (and wore none before this one) so I don’t like the feel of heavy rings.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 26/02/2018 13:11

It is a hallmarked precious metal.

No one is paying me to say this, honest! But it was such a find at the time, I was jubilant!

Appuskidu · 26/02/2018 13:43

I am liking the palladium idea!!

I had a yellow gold wedding ring, but 11yrs ago I had to replace it. I opted for white gold as I always wear silver jewellery, don't actually like yellow gold at all. Anyway I had no idea about playing etc, I've worn my white gold ring all night and day for 11yrs, and it still looks like erm...white gold. Have included a photo, the other rings are silver.
