Do you have white gold or platinum wedding rings and do you regret it?

I had yellow gold back when everyone had yellow gold, but really regret it now as everything else I wear is silver-coloured Confused.

I would like to replace them and ‘upgrade’ to platinum rings, but for the same size diamond as I’ve currently got-I think we’re looking at many many thousands!?

Does anyone have white gold jewellery and is happy with it? Or do you regret it as you have to get it rhodium plated?

I've got platinum rings but DH has a palladium one. Palladium is a lot lighter than platinum for the same sized ring as it's less dense. If you go for palladium, make sure it's the 950 not the 500 so you're getting decent quality metal instead of half Pd, half alloys/silver. It will be a lot softer.

I think white gold is a bit of a con; lots of people don't realise that it will need repeatedly dipping as the actual 'white gold' is regular yellow gold with nickel or palladium doping. If they made that clear in the first place, people might make more informed shopping choices. At least with platinum and palladium, you know what you see is the colour it will stay.

My engagement ring is 18ct white gold and I’ve never had it replated - I’ve had it 10+ years.
My wedding ring otoh is 9ct and is in in need of replating, I’ve not had it 2 years yet.

Feezles · 25/02/2018 17:32

My wedding and engagement rings are both white gold. I have no regrets.

I chose white gold for two reasons: firstly a cheaper metal for the setting meant we could afford a nicer stone for the e-ring, and secondly, it's a sentimental choice as my mum had white gold too.

I had the e-ring replated just before the wedding so it matched the wedding ring , but not in the last 5 years since, and they look fine. Not super-shiny, but no yellowing at all.

White gold, unplated. Doesn't look dull, doesn't need anything doing, won't change colour and is much more interesting than plated or yellow (imho anyway!).

Oldraver · 25/02/2018 18:06

I had a 9ct white gold Engagement ring and 18ct white gold Wedding ring from high street jewelers. I was told it was bad mixing the two, though I wore them for 20 odd years without any wearing or discolouration

Platinum rings here, been married 18 years and they have the patina of a long(ish) marriage which I love. Never regretted them.

Kitsharrington · 25/02/2018 18:23

Platinum here. No regrets. Timeless.

BuzzKillington · 25/02/2018 18:31

Mine are yellow gold - got married in 1995.

Love the design but hate the yellow gold, so never wear them.

ApacheEchidna · 25/02/2018 18:33

My white gold ring hasn't left my finger for 18 years. Sod getting it replated I don't mind a bit that it's a bit duller than it was the day we married. We're both a few pounds heavier, quite a bit wrinklier and beginning to go grey too. Time passes. It's a bit of metal. The fact that it hasn't left my finger for 18 years is a lot more meaningful to me than its shininess.

I have a wedding ring which is a mixture of yellow (9ct) and white gold - a white gold band sandwiched between two yellow ones. I also have an eternity ring which is gold but set with diamonds so the overall effect is not a bright yellow. Would this work for you?

LockedOutOfMN · 25/02/2018 18:40

Platinum for engagement and wedding ring, no regrets.

MirandaWest · 25/02/2018 18:40

I have palladium engagement and wedding rings. Like them both and have had non problems with them

BeatyBeast · 25/02/2018 18:42

I have platinum for the past 20 years but it's matt, not polished. It's aged well and I still love it.

Carakanjac · 25/02/2018 18:47

All white gold here or palladium. Never had to plate it. 18k if that makes any difference. Maybe cheaper jewllers use more yellow gold in their white.

purpleprincess24 · 25/02/2018 18:53

I have platinum tension engagement ring from

www.econe.co.uk/designers/niessing.html

My husbands late mother had left him her engagement ring, so we used the main diamond from that to create the tension ring (with his dads blessing)

wombatron · 25/02/2018 19:01

White gold here. I find the bottom of the band of the engagement ring looks a bit dull, but I still wouldn't change them. I may have gone with platinum if I'd had a choice but I'm very clumsy and white gold is slightly more flexible if I bang the prongs.

But I wear silver and yellow gold also - I think the days of not mixing jewellery metals are falling behind us.

I had yellow gold, got them dipped, love them!!

Slightly better pic! Horrid lighting on the other one!

I have a thick banded white gold engagement ring with rose gold bit surrounding the diamond (halo setting?). My wedding ring is plain ride gold. Every other bit of jewellery I wear is silver coloured.
The rhodium plating is wearing off, so the white gold is yellowing slightly. Am actually entitled to a free re-plating of the white gold band, but can't be bothered as quite like the effect. Not proper yellow gold but not as 'cold' as pristine white gold (or platinum).
Perhaps you could get your ring rhodium plated?

Appuskidu · 25/02/2018 19:07

I had yellow gold, got them dipped, love them!

Could I poss see a photo?! How long has it lasted?

I hadn’t really heard of palladium as an alternative to platinum. Can anyone tell me much lighter it feels?

I’m swaying towards having it reset in platinum at the moment but need to find out how much it will cost!

Like this - could do with a polish, but never take them off!

Mine are yellow gold with a tiny bit of white plating pattern. I only married 4 years ago and it wasn’t ‘fashionable’ to have yellow but I loved the engagement ring (sapphire stone) and just got a wedding ring made to fit round it.

I do wear silver coloured jewellery too I don’t mind at all that it doesn’t all ‘match’. I have a few other yellow gold pieces too so I suppose I actually like yellow gold.

tortelliniforever · 25/02/2018 19:17

I have a yellow gold wedding band and a silver engagement/eternity ring that I wear on my other hand.

sparklepops123 · 25/02/2018 19:37

Sunnyseashell - exactly what you said Grin

Undies1990 · 25/02/2018 19:39

I have a white gold engraved wedding ring. It's 25 years old now, looks as perfect as they day I bought it. Never had it cleaned or re-rhodium plated. It's 18 carrot gold, so harder than 9 carrot gold I think so that might be something to consider. My 9 carrot white gold engagement ring however looks a little dull after 27 years!

I love my white gold rings and haven't even considered upgrading to platinum!
