Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Pupsie I use the Cream in a 50ml yellow tube. That’s the heavier one. There is a lotion too and I believe a new serum. Would love to try them at some stage.

Bo it's for quite a long period after tbh, it looks taught, shiny and last night had tiny dots of oil all over (forehead and nose)

botemp · 24/02/2018 11:46

Do you feel it's helping at all, mint? It may be a touch of purging, otherwise it's a bit of a mystery to me. Maybe it's worth switching up and using it before cleanser as discussed before but at the same frequency you're using it now?

Thanks again lone I'll watch that chip later sounds interesting.
No I didn't put what I'm using in the order I use it, I've read up on that so think I'm doing it correctly.
The acid use is only in the last couple of weeks and no again I'm not planning on introducing more or using both long term.

Love this thread it's a mine of great info.

Lonesurvivor · 24/02/2018 11:58

When I was doing my makeup this morning I was amazed by how much younger and fresher looking I looked compared to yesterday. Was so impressed with the overnight activity of my skin. Then I realised I'd had my hair done yesterday and the five weeks of grey regrowth was gone nothing to do with my skinGrin

SophieLion · 24/02/2018 13:31

Pupsie - what is Nia? I’ve googled it but only coming up with a skincare brand** and so not sure what you are referring to exactly. Was this meant for me? Good idea to use acids on other places on my body though - thanks!

Yong - sorry must have misunderstood you. Mine doesn’t leave a white cast though. Perhaps due to our different skin types?

Bo - thank you. No I don’t have KP or ingrown hairs, rough patches etc. I might use the LG on my feet though as they tend to get hard skin from dancing. Had a look at the link, thanks. It really is a science, but interesting.

Think I will just proceed with caution with my face and observe carefully. I feel I'm already more tuned into my skin.

Lone - your last post made me laugh!! GrinGrin

mintmagnummm · 24/02/2018 14:15

Bo could it possibly be that I used the fab ultra repair cream after? It did tingle a bit and eucerin doesn't usually and I have few breakouts today, who knows! I've used the fab cream two evenings so far now.

EnidButton · 24/02/2018 14:33

So no adverse reactions to the M&S capsules. Which is always a big pro in my book. Trying again under make up today although they'd be an expensive primer.

Tant I am feeling better thank you. Not sure I look better. I'm maybe more chicken nuggets and a joint now than Big Macs and smack. Grin (imagine reading that out of context. Shock) Feeling better is the main thing though. I hope your gums improve soon. Flowers Which anti biotics did they give you?
Thanks for confirming my B vit suspicions! I'm writing a note on the bottle so I don't forget and take them again.

Yong and Sophie Wrist is totally fine today! Tiny bit blotchy but otherwise..🤷🏻‍♀️ Hope the cica helps Soph and hope you feel better soon Yong. That doesn't sound very nice at all.

Hi MrsD 👋🏻 BrewCake

Bo yes, best sounds more appropriate than better. Be your best self. Black and white isn't good, I'm all about the grey areas. Grin or at least I try. Nothing that new in article and a bit advertising-ey but I'll take pics and upload later. It's a nice light read. Gorgeous photos.

Right, I am halfway through booking a hair appointment. Procrastinating? Me? Never!

Pupsiecola · 24/02/2018 15:51

Sorry Sophie that bit about Nia (niacinamide) was for Lone.

JDSTER · 24/02/2018 15:57

Sophie Nia is niacinamide which is a skincare ingredient good for pore tightening, skin tone and brightening. It’s often in moisturisers (it’s in the LRP one I’m using that’s not available in UK yet). TO have a niacinamide and zinc serum that’s aimed at skins with acne.

Bo you’re welcome to the Sisley concealer- don’t feel bad Grin. Just pm your details. I know you’re not UK.
Interesting (not in a good way) about base ingredients of TO. I won’t be repurchasing the brand. Nothing I’ve tried has wowed me so no loss.

Welcome MrsD

Tantpoke · 24/02/2018 17:14

enid I have a recollection of CH once saying Vit B made her breakout really badly too, so it must be a fairly common side effect.

I'm on 400mg 3 x a day of Metronidazole

Tantpoke · 24/02/2018 17:19

Interestingly 'metronidazole' is used in some topical treatments of rosacea ie 'metrogel, zyomet, metrosa - this could explain why my redness has gone down (lets hope it stays down)

SophieLion · 24/02/2018 18:28

Ah that explains my confusion. But thanks for the explanation JDSTER.

Was re-reading what you wrote Bo about TO: ".....means the formula is never guaranteed to be the same as the last batch." Not great..... ShockHmm

SophieLion · 24/02/2018 18:29

Hello Mrs D btw SmileSmile

EnidButton · 24/02/2018 18:52

m.lookfantastic.com/la-roche-posay-cicaplast-gel-b5-40ml/11091814.html?rctxt=pers

I didn't know Cicaplast came in gel form too. It looks very good but is Sodium Hyaluronate the same as Hyaluronic Acid?

I know I've asked that before, I'm sorry, my memory isn't so good today.

Tant It is prescribed for rosacea, seems like a good side effect! Sorry it's not working on your gums yet. At least you know they're getting in your system, maybe they're working on it. Smile

EnidButton · 24/02/2018 18:57

Tant Do you have rosacea officially? If not, maybe you have a mild bit of it? They normally prescribe the topical stuff and you use it for 8 weeks. If it's Rose (I can't spell it!!) it might come back as it's a short course you're on now. Just a thought.

SallieSallow · 24/02/2018 20:04

Enid I have a cicaplast anti peeling gel, it seems to be unavailable now so think the one you've linked might be the new version. I used it a lot when TO retinol made my face fall off and it was good stuff, I still use it occasionally but as a spot treatment on flaky patches rather than all over. Sodium hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid according to The Google, from what I can gather HA can't penetrate the skin so SH is used in skincare instead even though serums etc are labelled as HA. rather confusing Confused but I think yes as far as skincare is concerned they are the same thing.

I'm steering clear of TO now as well, as well as changing ingredients I think their products don't have much longevity and seem to stop working/cause reactions after a few weeks use, that was my experience anyway. I really like hylamide sub q and a couple of things from hand chemistry though so for purely selfish reasons I hope Deciem aren't going to implode.

I tested the Skinpep HA today and like it, it's not as watery as hylamide but it is a non greasy/non sticky lightweight gel so it could be a potential replacement for hylamide, good bit cheaper too. I'll use the trial size up and then decide, hyalamide doesn't work miracles on my skin but it's one of those products I notice when I don't use, my skin just looks/feels a bit off without it.

Welcome MrsD Smile yes if you post what you are thinking of using/adding then hopefully between us we can share some experience/opinions.

Bo I like the sound of Sallie Swallows dermaplaning with her sword Grin she probably makes her own skin serum with venom she's personally milked from a snake and blood she's drawn from a dragon.

EnidButton · 24/02/2018 20:31

Thank you Sallie. Still a bit confused but guess they're the same then. Grin

I'm considering giving HA/SH another try now I have the basics down. The gel could be a good place to start. It seems to be in most serums that I like the look of and when DH used up my HA serum (hydraluron) it worked brilliantly. So I'm tempted.

Boots have 3 for 2 on skincare. Could be just what they call the 'expert' skincare. I got a couple of waters and LRP cleanser. Also restocked lansinoh and neutrogena red top. I'm like a lizard. I need greasing up at night. (!) Or Madam thingy off Doctor Who, "moisturise me".

Tantpoke · 24/02/2018 20:32

enid no I havent been diagnosed with rosacea, I just always have red cheeks. I was given a horrible cream by my Dr a while ago called Rozex which I hated so stopped using after a week but only because I told him I thought I had a bit of rosacea.

I still have it at the back of my cupboard and yes it has metronidazole 0.75% - I didnt like the fact it had emulsifyng wax as the next ingredient.

EnidButton · 24/02/2018 20:33

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Hairmageddon looms...
EnidButton · 24/02/2018 20:35

Tant You could've been right. Maybe they'll be enough to fix it if it's mild. You can get other creams on prescription if you wanted to try again. No good if they cause problems though.

Tantpoke · 24/02/2018 20:46

enid I think if the redness stays away for a while then returns I'll look into other formulations that don't include the wax.

Lonesurvivor · 24/02/2018 22:06

Pupsiecola thanks for the info re nia, the more I read the more I realise I don't need it and I'm convinced it doesn't actually suit my skin. Its interesting about To base ingredients been subject to change in different batches. I get on well with TO in general but I prefer their
Hylamid range, my pocket doesn't though.

I bought No7 vitamin C today. Its only 10ml and when you start using it you add the two ingredients together. It will apparently only stay stable for one month but hardly likely with 10ml it'll last that long.
It was down from €25 to €15 and with voucher I got it for €8.50. Since I started reacting badly to their serum I've avoided most of No7 so I'm kicking myself now for giving in to a bargain!
I also stumbled on this offer on their site so ordered some for my teens. www.boots.ie/super-facialist-salicylic-acid-anti-blemish-purify-and-refresh-facial-scrub-150ml-10145895
