Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Sorry to hear about the lines around eyes Tant. I guess that's why they say women have to choose between their butt and their face at one point GrinGrin

JDSTER · 16/03/2018 17:29

Halo I’m in Sophie’s book of quotes Grin
I don’t deliberately use the retinoid around my eyes, certainly the differin I wouldn’t want to. Unless you’re careful to avoid the eye area or apply a barrier type cream (Dr Dray does this before using differin) there can be some migration to the eye area. I don’t apply a barrier cream but just avoid the area but I did notice a bit of dryness around my temples area which I think was retinoid related, but not deliberate iyswim

Like Tant I really like toleriane fluide (non oily without shea). It’s so light and doesn’t clog my pores. Not so good when skin is dry and needing a bit of oil though, but otherwise hydrates my oilier type skin very satisfactorily and certainly doesn’t clog.

SallieSallow · 16/03/2018 18:20

Bo I wear my hair up a lot because I'm lazy and can't be bothered faffing with it every morning Grin That would be the case with whatever style I had (as long as it was long enough to wear up or tied back of course). And I like my buns for work, I think they go quite well with a business-y type look for client meetings etc.

Sophie I agree with JDSTER about retinol/retinoid but of course we have been watching the same videos. I don't buffer my differin though. I apply directly, leave it to soak in for 30 mins plus, then use HA and moisturiser. I do apply eye cream first as don't want it migrating near my eyes which are sensitive & would sting if it got near them, I couldn't tolerate LRP redermic eye cream which is a low strength retinoid.

The lines round my eyes are getting really bad, I want to find a more potent eye cream for night use. I must try out the Skinpep gel patch at some point though I know any effects will be temporary with that.

I think Banafish mentioned having Botox round her eye area which is something I'll still investigating as opinions seem divided as to whether it's suitable for eyes or not.

hi snails 🐌 , it's been a while...

I have a question, what are you supposed to avoid skincare wise if you are expecting a little snail in the next 9-ish months?

botemp · 16/03/2018 19:03

otyt, you're back! I hope all is well with you, you had me worried. I'm getting a bit misty eyed at the thought of a baby snail, congratulations Flowers

Retinoids of all kinds are off the table, then there's discussion around use of BHA, and certain chemical UV filters. So avoid if you're a rather safe than sorry sort. Best is probably to switch to a physical sunscreen since risk of melasma is higher but I know that's tougher for you as you're not a pale person, so possibly a tinted one?

Heads up that asos have 20% off this weekend and they stock Hylamide, Indeed Labs, Hand Chemistry, Embryolisse etc. Might be of use!

SallieSallow · 16/03/2018 19:57

Lovely to see you Older Smile and congratulations on the little snail 🐌 🐌 🐌 Flowers

I used to be Userallusedup btw but name changed recently.

Tantpoke · 16/03/2018 19:57

Good luck my skin is very sensitive and reactive hence the toleraine fluide but be interested to hear how you get on with the ultra.

Tantpoke · 16/03/2018 20:04

*oops I'm a page behind re previous comment

I have sore eyes from applying cream around my eyes much earlier and managing to get Vit C applied earlier in the mix, ouch, I seem to have acquired more lines in the process, how is that even possible FFS

OTYT Flowers

olderthanyouthink · 16/03/2018 20:08

bo thanks, baby snail is a bit of an accident (and I'm sure is causing stress spots on me and my bf).

Sorry, didn't mean to worry you, depression was kinda kicking my arse for a while (turns out holidays don't always make you feel better) and I slightly fell off the wagon for a while.

I'm still using the LRP cleanser, Superdrug serum, simple moisturiser, the ordinary salicylic acid (I should stop this? Need to find something else for the spots then), and a LRP spf 30 SC (I bought it without checking properly and it is slightly goasty but ok for winter).

Tinted SC would look like I'd nicked my mums foundation?

Thanks Sallie I hope this username isn't reflective of your skin?

Thanks tant

SallieSallow · 16/03/2018 20:31

Older the new name it is a reflection on my skin sadly, my skin is pale olive with a lot of yellow in it and very much does not look it's best at this time of year Sad

I have a tinted spf 50 from bioderma called nude touch that I use in summer, but not sure if the colours would be a match for you as it only comes in two shades. And it's very matte so unforgiving if you have dry skin, I can't use it in winter as it clings to dry patches.

yongnian · 16/03/2018 20:57

Crawling back in from Tonsillitisville...which followed on from Influenzaville....nothing otherwise useful to report..just trying to get back in the room....

JDSTER · 16/03/2018 21:55

Congratulations older I hope you keep well

Sound a rough time yong but hopefully on the mend.

SophieLion · 17/03/2018 07:41

GrinGrin JDSTER at book of quotes! Well at least I didn't mis-quote you or make one up (thinking of Bo and my "botox in a bottle comment here"!).

So as no-one tried the Medik8 Retinol Eye TR then?

Congratulations Olderthanyouthink Flowers

Yong - glad to hear you are on the mend Smile

Tant - if the Toleriane Ultra doesn't work out then I will try the Fluide for sure. The Ultra just seemed more suited to my skin type. I think Bo also uses (or used) the Ultra and likes it.

Jozxyqk · 17/03/2018 09:53

Question regarding face wash: does this one look any good?

sukinorganics.com/products/copy-of-foaming-facial-cleanser

I got some on a whim, as I'd really liked the hair products. Despite saying it's a foaming cleanser, there isn't much foam at all.

Tantpoke · 17/03/2018 12:33

Yong you poor thing Flowers glad you're on the mend finally

Joz I have used Sukin products on my hands and body and really liked them.

The skin around my eyes has calmed down but I took an antihistamine last night and again this morning.
The skin has gone all dry and crepey Shock at the outer corner everything I've applied so far has stung like a MOFO.

Tantpoke · 17/03/2018 12:39

I've just applied my trusted friend Vaseline, instant relief.

I love this stuff it always works for me when my skin goes bat shit crazy plus it's always lying around the house.

Tantpoke · 17/03/2018 12:41

Joz >>whispers

Ollivander84 · 17/03/2018 13:22

My new hair products to try! All curly girl method friendly

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Hairmageddon looms...
SallieSallow · 17/03/2018 13:34

That sounds awful Yong Sad Flowers glad you are one the mend now.

Joz I've never used sukin but think I'd be fine with that cleanser in summer, I have used cerave foaming cleanser with no issues as didn't find it was very foamy either.

My eyes are stinging today as well Tant but I've just been out in the awful freezing cold wind we have here. No snow though so not complaining too much.

Those products look good Olli I wish the curly girl method worked for me, my hair just looked tatty and unkempt when I tried it Sad

Tantpoke · 17/03/2018 13:52

Mine are sore and very close to peeling, from a combination of Vit C am and Retinol pm methinks Hmm, going to keep a huge distance from eye area from now on and apply SPF daily around eye area whether I'm indoors or outdoors.

It's freezing today and we have slushy snow falling but not settling, I hope it doesnt ice over later.

Pupsiecola · 17/03/2018 13:54

Tant it just had me peeling, red and sensitised after a couple of well-spaced out uses. Especially around the nose. Even the Cerave cleanser was tingling.

Looking forward to getting into the Verso eye cream. It stings a little for a minute or two, as expected, but then it's fine.

I ordered a jade roller from Amazon. I thought it would be good for my puffy eyes, if kept in the fridge and only £8 so not too spendy. As soon as I got it out the box it fell apart, and it won't hold together so it's going back. Where did others buy from please?

Tantpoke · 17/03/2018 14:02

Pupsie I think that's what must be contributing to the peeling around my eyes. My eyes now have lines where there weren't any Shock I hope they bugger off soon Grin

That's a shame re the jade roller. I'm far too scared to use my derma roller so have chickened out of that idea for now

I hope the Verso eye cream works for you

SallieSallow · 17/03/2018 14:10

Tant I'm really careful not to get any actives near my eyes as mine are easily irritated too.

Pupsie my jade roller was from amazon too, in fact sounds like it might be the same one. Mine is fine but some of the reviewers said theirs fell apart so some of them must be duff and seems like it's the luck of the draw if you get a broken one or not. I took the risk as have prime so free returns.

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01NBMJV7F/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8

Pupsiecola · 17/03/2018 14:48

Yes that's the one Sallie. Shame. It's put me off ordering a different one. I'd like a non-Amazon-sold one ideally. Will look.

Tant that happened to me too - well, I had red patches just below the orbital bone. I thought I must have taken the product up too high.

I'm going to be reverting to my LRP Redermic to use that up, then I shall have to consider whether to RP or whether to dare to try sth else...
