Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Looking at Enid’s picture I’m about 10 Grin

SophieLion · 15/03/2018 15:42

I must be about 2 GrinWink

MrsDOnofrio · 15/03/2018 16:21

I’m probably a 1 on the top; the sides and back are razored/clippered so even shorter.

SophieLion · 15/03/2018 16:28

Wow - I bet your hair is super-easy Mrs D Grin

MrsDOnofrio · 15/03/2018 17:54

It certainly is Sophie; 6 weekly hair appointments notwithstanding

SallieSallow · 15/03/2018 18:32

I'm at 24 same as the woman in the picture. When I wear my hair down I style it like that too but mine is dark. I'll be going up to a 20 when I finally get round to making the appointment.

You have gorgeous hair Olli I'd love to have proper curls. Mine is sort of wavy/curly but it's more of a dragged through a hedge backwards look with lost of frizz if left to it's own devices, I set it on overnight rag rollers when I want to wear it down.

EnidButton · 15/03/2018 19:14

Sounds lovely Sallie Smile

Pupsiecola · 16/03/2018 09:28

Sallie that Hungarian brand is sold here in Space N.K. I think it's very expensive but not much bang for your buck.

Flying home from a lovely 5 days in Prague with a friend. I bought very minimal skincare. I am looking forward to getting back to my stash, especially the Verso (and DH and the DCs Grin).

Lonesurvivor · 16/03/2018 10:11

Re the hair pic mine is at 14 now it was at my bra strap which I'm guessing is an 18 and where I'd like it to be again. Think I must've got it cut to at least an 8 last summer it wasn't touching my shoulders. Regretted it almost immediately but least it grows back.

MustBeThin · 16/03/2018 10:43

Ingredients for the Cerave moisturising cream if anyone's interested! Don't know if it's any different to the one in America as I don't have one to compare. Just tried a bit on my hand and it sunk straight in just like the lotion Hmm I was hoping I'd be able to feel it on the skin but there's no trace of it.

SophieLion · 16/03/2018 10:58

JDSTER- I've been looking for the Dr Sam and Medik8 TR video that you suggested and I can't find it. Watched some Dr Sam ones which are about retinoids generally and one short one showing her night-time routine.

If easy and quick, are you able to send a link with it? Thank you Thanks

botemp · 16/03/2018 11:35

Answer is still no WRT retinoids, mint. It's either dryness and/or dehydration that stops things from sinking in easily, it desperately tries to hold on to the moisture it still has.

Sophie, technically Jojoba isn't an oil and it's very similar in composition to skin's own sebum so it's well tolerated by most. It doesn't have the 'suffocating' effect that oils like squalane and MO have. I've always used Jojoba as an emergency standby, as cleanser and moisturiser.

Sallie like others I don't really care about age, more condition. What does puzzle me sometimes is why some women always wear it up, without fail, to me the whole point of long hair is to wear it loose and up when you don't feel like washing your hair. But never mind me, I used to have such thick and plentiful hair that I could only grow it to lower bra strap length (when curly/wavy, was about lower back straightened) otherwise it would give me a headache from the sheer weight otherwise, so I'm simply mourning my lovely hair's past.

Is it wrong I'm slightly miffed that kangaroos are not being incorporated into skin care. I had my sales pitch for 'Roo Skin' all lined up already and everything. I was even going to commission a custom kangaroo emoji Sad

Yes, Omorovicza is a true spa/pamper brand. I do really like their floral water but only because it smells like my grandmother. Otherwise, there's not much special about the brand, it uses the bifida ferment lysate (also in the SK-II first essence and Estee Lauder ANR) and some thermal water to make it 'special'. My skin really likes Bifida, but it's really individual, it does nothing for others. I have heard their spa is really lovely to visit though.

Pupsie, good to hear you had a good time Smile

I think JDSTER was referring too, Sophie. At least that's the only one I can remember her featuring the Medik8 TR on.

Aside question, anyone signed up with Beauty Pie? I'm looking at their skincare and like that they're formulating without a lot of common irritants. The Retinol serum looks of possible interest (not for me, BP is still UK only, I think) and is very affordable, monthly subscription fee aside.

JDSTER · 16/03/2018 12:43

sophie I’m at work but it looks familiar what bo has put up.

SophieLion · 16/03/2018 13:10

Thanks Bo and JDSTER. Yes that's one of her videos that I had found. I think I thought she would be discussing the product more - although useful to see how much she applied and method of application. Plus saw she put some moisturiser on beforehand (I had understood retinoids go on straight after cleansing).

Thanks for the jojoba info too Bo. Good to know as I'm getting to frustrated with these spots. Once an under-the-skin one starts, it can take up to a month to go Sad Does anyone have any tips for dealing with these (not benzoyl whatever it's called as fed up of ruining things)?

I think I will probably start with the Medik8 3 TR then. With the Medik8 R-retinoate and the verso eye cream on the long-term wish list (together with the SC vit C). If I wait for after the summer now it will be October probably....

I'm not sure the 3TR can go around the eyes but I also saw a Medik8 Retinol Eye TR (0.1%).
Have you tried this?

JDSTER · 16/03/2018 13:25

sophie you can put moisturiser on before. I’ve taken to applying LRP double repair after evening cleanse and then applying differin about 30 mins later, once it’s fully absorbed. Niacinamide (ingredient in my moisturiser) works well with retinoids and helps skin tolerance to them.

If you’ve got a decent SPF in place there’s no need to wait until Oct to start a retinoid. It’s the ingredient that will be key so why wait? (I do understand your view, I’m just challenging it I suppose Smile). Once established on a retinoid you won’t be stopping/starting every season. You can of course but you won’t get the good long term results.

cad186 · 16/03/2018 13:55

I signed up with Beauty Pie a while ago before they had introduced much skincare. As well as the £10 monthly fee I think I was spending another £20 on top each month (cost of products plus shipping fees). I felt that after a few months I was buying things for the sake of it rather than buying things I needed. I think it's better now as there are lots more products but still think I would end up buying things just to spend the £100 monthly allowance. £30 per month though is good value for what you get. I'm quite tempted to join for another couple of months, buy what I need then cancel again! The products I bought were all good quality but none of the foundations really suited my skin unfortunately.

SophieLion · 16/03/2018 14:05

Thanks JDSTER - more info to add to my notes Grin

"Once established on a retinoid you won’t be stopping/starting every season. You can of course but you won’t get the good long term results."

Well yes this was where my thought process was going exactly.

Can you use your retinoid around the eye area though or do you have a separate one or just not use anything on eye area at all?

From Bo's description the Verso eye one sounds good but it's also quite pricey like the R-retinoate so prefer to wait and try something cheaper to start with.

SophieLion · 16/03/2018 14:08

Oh FFS..... whilst checking out ingredients of my unopened LRP toleriane ultra moisturisers, just seen the night one does have niacinamide but that both of them have squalane. Which I now suspect I have an issue with..... AngryAngryAngry

How can a company produce something specifically for sensitive skin and then put in ingredients which are known to clog pores?!

botemp · 16/03/2018 14:17

Squalane (derived from olive oil) is not a known clog porer at all. ^Squalene^ (derived from sharks) is highly comodogenic. Make sure to check the e/a at the end as Google will produce search results for both as one and the same, ie. If you search 'squalane clogging' you'll get results for squalene instead.

I don't like squalane as a carrier agent on its own as it's just too suffocating and doesn't get absorbed on my skin but as an INCI ingredient as one amongst many others it's absolutely fine.

OP posts:
SophieLion · 16/03/2018 14:40

Ah Bo to the rescue!
My LRPs have squalane in them. The TO retinoid was in squalane too. If I understand correctly, the TO squalane likely caused me spots because it's the carrying agent whereas it should be ok as an ingredient in the LRP. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Yes saw on google there is also a squalene from shark liver?

Tantpoke · 16/03/2018 14:41

Sophie return the toleraine ultra and swap for toleraine fluide non oil - thats the one I have and love because it's very kind to my skin.

Since I went down a dress size during my infected bloody painful gum incident and could barely eat a thing I have now spotted the start of very faint lines around my eyes Shock Gin

Luckily I have various unused anti wrinkle creams lying around so they are my new eye creams - I have just started with Filorga time filler.

Pupsie glad you had a lovely trip to Prague, the neostrata seems ok on my face so far, what was it you didn't like about it again?

Tantpoke · 16/03/2018 14:44
  • plus toleraine ultra has shea butter in it which always gives me spots
SophieLion · 16/03/2018 15:52

Hi Tant, thank you Smile The Fluide also has squalane. Valid point and yes I know they contain shea butter (think Enid kindly pointed that out too).

I was contemplating buying the fluide but I chose the ultra because I think the fluide is for combination to oily intolerant skin whereas the ultra seemed to be for ultra sensitive, reactive skin. I concluded my skin was more of the latter (my spots are caused by ingredients blocking pores rather than oil production) than the former.

If it all goes wrong, then on the positive side, I'll know to avoid shea butter in the future Grin I bought them online for a cheaper price anyway.

mintmagnummm · 16/03/2018 15:52

I would have thought the opposite, that If skin dry/dehydrated it would absorb products very quickly!
I don't think my skin likes squalane either
