Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Hi I'm new to this thread. I have just started using The Ordinary Granactive Retinol 2% I use it every other night, hoping to increase to every night in a while. But I don't know really how much to apply? It just says "a small amount" in the instructions which is unhelpfully vague. Could someone advise me please?

SophieLion · 14/03/2018 19:29

Hi Sallie, personally I think long hair in your late 40s really depends on the quality of the hair and how it looks with the rest of your style.

Almost all the women here have long hair (whatever their age). Some look amazing and some hair just looks over-processed, far too unnaturally blonde and dry and nasty. I often think a cut would make them look fresher.

Saying that, I don't think anyone should judge you or mock you. And (said in the nicest way Smile) you shouldn't care if they do. I had a pixie cut a couple of years ago and I swear that some people here looked at me like I was MAD!!! How could I have cut off my crowning glory????!!!!! (Did get a lot of compliments too though so wasn't all bad) I loved it,it was super easy (I exercise a lot) and so I didn't care what the others thought. Got bored of it now and growing it out but that's another story...Grin

SallieSallow · 14/03/2018 20:02

The quality of my hair isn't great (coarse and frizzy) but when I wear it down I do make an effort with it and style it into loose curls/waves and it's dark so doesn't (hopefully) look over processed. I mainly wear it up in either a loose slightly messy bun, a sleek ballet style bun or a braided bun, depending on how smart or casual I need/want to look. I do like my buns Grin

I don't care all that much what other people think but I did wonder (more out of curiosity really) if they might be silently judging. I'd like to have some sort of long bob type style but I've tried that before and it was a triangle of frizz disaster, medium length styles just don't suit my hair type and I don't think a very short cut would suit my face. Plus I do like having lots of hair, it keeps my head nice and warm Smile

Dandelion I have not used that particular product but the typical advice for retinol seems to be a 'pea sized' amount. Even that's not an exact science though, do they mean a little garden pea or a big marrowfat one Grin I just use an approximate vaguely pea sized blob.

EnidButton · 14/03/2018 20:05

If I've learnt anything from Mumsnet it's that someone somewhere will judge you no matter what you do. So you may as well just suit yourself. Grin

SophieLion · 14/03/2018 20:27

Wise words Enid Smile

miffy2 · 14/03/2018 20:28

I think I have copped as to why my skin peeled after P&M superstar. I applied a bit of LRP double repair moisturiser afterwards and then before bed I noticed it was peeling. Last night I just applied the oil and nothing later on. Skin was fine. So maybe, unlike the tret, I just can't layer a cream over it. Phew!

JDSTER I had bought the P&M ages ago in a sale and just decided, as I am halfway through the tube of tret, to pause for a bit and give the oil a go.

Lonesurvivor · 14/03/2018 21:39

Very wise words Enid
Glad to hear you got sorted Miffy it's one thing reacting to cheaper brands but after spending a lot on something I'd be gutted not to be able to use it.

Tantpoke · 14/03/2018 21:43

And there's even a picture of it here.

SallieSallow · 14/03/2018 21:43

Tant Grin Grin Grin you have solved the mystery!! I've just googled and found an ad on YouTube which is the one I heard, obviously just didn't hear the word FLOWER. I'm so pleased that a) I'm not going loopy and b) the kangaroos are safe Smile

Glad you've solved your peely mystery too Miffy

And yes Enid very wise words indeed.

Tantpoke · 14/03/2018 21:45

Sallie don't cut your hair Shock

SallieSallow · 14/03/2018 21:59

I'm going to have a few inches of my hair Tant to take it back up to bra strap length, I only go to the hairdresser once or twice a year so need a decent amount chopping off otherwise I'd be sitting on it Grin Saying that I haven't even made the appointment yet!

Was it you that posted the videos about home trimming? I was thinking of trying that but wasn't sure if it would work with my hair texture.

Lonesurvivor · 14/03/2018 22:54

Going to have to eat my words, found a couple of slightly peeling patches on my forehead this evening. Can't really see them but they're there, need to stop myself at them keep rubbing in the oil I put on earlier.

EnidButton · 14/03/2018 23:03

I liked my hair bra strap length. That's what I'm aiming for now. It had gone past that before this cut and needed that terrible layer chipping out. Not sure what length it is now but past shoulders...

Sounds like a good length to me Salle. A decent cut but still long.

EnidButton · 14/03/2018 23:08

*chopping out

Looking at this mine was at 22-23 inches and is now around 16-17 Shock

Got a sample of this in my glossybox. Smells incredible, and felt instantly soothing/hydrating, my skin loved it

https://www.decleor.co.uk/aromessence-neroli-amara-oil-serum#

JDSTER · 15/03/2018 08:13

Envy at all you people with lovely long locks.

MustBeThin · 15/03/2018 09:04

Thanks bo they never got back to me. Sad I think I might get the big jar of cream because I'm not sure the lotion is going to be hydrating enough for me on it own. I like to be able to feel product on my skin and the lotion sinks straight in. Blush

Mint I was going to suggest Maui conditioner from boots but then I saw that you can't use coconut and Maui contains coconut water. I love the stuff, it makes my hair long hair super silky and it doesn't get tangled whatsoever after I wash it.

A few weeks ago i had quite a few inches off my hair. It was about hip length and I had it cut just below my bar strap. I love it, but I was so scared at first Grin its the shortest I've had it in about 15 years (I'm 28) it feels dead short to me but I know it's still quite long really.

SophieLion · 15/03/2018 10:01

I'm with JDSTER: you all sound like you've got the most gorgeous thick, long hair EnvySmile

Ollivander84 · 15/03/2018 10:10

Mine is fairly short (above shoulder) but mega curly! Just ordered a load of trepadora products to try

mintmagnummm · 15/03/2018 10:28

Thanks thin I have actually tried Maui but same problems as most of them! Loved at first then started to flare up my scalp and made my hair even more coarse.

Has anyone tried or heard of Maria nila shampoo and conditioner?

SophieLion · 15/03/2018 13:07

I've seen the photos of your hair Olli. It's stunning and gorgeous colour!

This morning I was in one of these luxury beauty shops here (brands like Annick Goutal etc) and they had a Hungarian brand called Omorovicza. The packaging was beautiful and it said the range was developed with a Hungarian Nobel prize-winning derm/lab. Had a look at the ingredients of a few the products for the face and almost all of them contained MOs or squalane or fragrance... disappointing

SophieLion · 15/03/2018 13:08

No Mint. Not heard of that brand, sorry.

SophieLion · 15/03/2018 13:18

Hi Dandelion, someone further up the thread (can't find the post now - perhaps it was Tant or Tsmummy) said they put 3 drops on their fingers and use that on one side of their face and then use another 3 drops for the other side. I tried that and it worked ok for me (although stopping the TO retinoid for other reasons).

Tantpoke · 15/03/2018 14:08

sallie yes it was me Blush I have fine hair though.

looking at enids picture I would say mine is now 16 but was 20.

It needed to be trimmed so will be 20 again soon enough.

dandelion yes its me I put about 3 drops on each finger for each side of my face.
