Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Fair enough Tant. I actually thought it was piercing the skin, hence my thinking hibiscrub was a good option.

Tantpoke · 08/03/2018 11:43

It doesnt pierce to bleeding but you're right it will pierce to a certain extent Hmm

I'll have a rethink actually re the hibiscrub.

yongnian · 08/03/2018 11:54

Thoughts with you pupsie at this difficult time Flowers
mint I think I have a travel sized one in a set which I bought for DD but doesn’t use..so thanks but I’ll swipe hers to have a go, save you the bother.
Baby Whamisa arrived today —delivery was smooth both doing well— will report back.
In other news, my lurg which continues to be utterly wearisome, has been pronounced on by GP, who I went to see as was a bit concerned cough might be bacterial. He reckons ‘true influenza’ past the worst....I’m not entirely convinced but he’s the one who went to med school, not me, so...wish the cough would do one..
Also wishing better health for all....

EnidButton · 08/03/2018 12:52

I love a bit of hibi-scrub

A woman in this Salon has Olli's hair. It's gorgeous!

EnidButton · 08/03/2018 12:53

Pupsie Hope today is going ok. Flowers

SophieLion · 08/03/2018 13:07

I've always liked Trinnie (and Susannah) - nice no-nonsense approach to things - and the video was cool but her face just looked weird (not sure if it was distorted because was playing the You Tube video on my phone).

SophieLion · 08/03/2018 13:08

Or Trinny, even Grin

mintmagnummm · 08/03/2018 13:57

Talking of olli where is she?? Haven't seen her here for ages, hope she's ok!

EnidButton · 08/03/2018 14:59

I was wondering that. Hopefully just busy. Think she's been on the perfume thread.

Hair is cut. 😱

Looks pretty good. So pleased to have my fringe back and it's so shiny! Good colour. Very blunt and no layers anymore. Hooray! It's straightened beyond belief so she could get the bottom perfect so I can't fully judge until it's more how I have it but I'm pleased. Relief! Feels a million times better.

Tantpoke · 08/03/2018 15:13

enid that's such a relief, yay to your lovely new hair style

I recieved this today to add to any suitable product I like

theordinary.com/product/rdn-100pct-l-ascorbic-acid-powder-20g?redir=1

I have ordered though from another site a vit C serum that is freshly made so will need to be used as soon as it arrives, will report on it once I've tested it out.
Then will compare to the TO Vit C powder which came with a tiny measuring spoon to get the perfect amount.

waves< to olli wherever you are

EnidButton · 08/03/2018 16:09

Bet you're all relieved you won't have to listen to me whine on for 6 months again. Grin

It's stick straight atm. I could take over bo's position on the Exclusif Art Gallery reception desk.

SophieLion · 08/03/2018 17:52

Goodness I just looked at the AF website too and I had no idea that you could buy stuff and make your own products. It's a whole new skincare world! Not sure I'm quite ready for that yet Grin

Tsmummy thanks for the vitamin C info.

Enid glad you are happy with your hair!

Pupsiecola · 08/03/2018 18:33

Hi all,

Thanks for the concern. The scan didn't show a tumour. It's dementia.

Tant, I will post the PC retinol tomorrow. I've also added the Neostrata. Recently opened. Used a couple of times. Also too strong for me I'm certain.

Thanks so much for my parcel JDSTER. Muchly appreciated.

I have been thinking about derms lately. Because I have been eyeing up the Verso (but it is ££££ and I'm being frugal. What to do). Anyway, I saw my derm 10 years ago for my initial rosacea diagnosis. She was very brusque with me and I came out close to tears (she put the fear of God into me re the sun - told me to wear a hat from March to September, even if it was for 5 minutes at school pick up.

She fixed my issue very quickly though so I saw her a couple of times afterwards. I saw her for a botox consult whilst I was researching/deciding on whether or not have surgery for my eyelids. We did a tiny amount but it didn't do much, as suspected. When I said to her "I think I need to have surgery on the top lids" she actually said "and underneath too" ie for my bags. Wasn't that a hugely insensitive but also unethical thing to be saying to me?!

Anyway, my under eye skin has got looser for sure, hence my ruminating on the Verso. I'm under no illusion that it would be a miracle cure. But I'd like to find sth to slow things down a bit!

How old is everyone else? I'm 48. I wish I'd started with all this 20 years ago. Those in their 20s and 30s ... START NOW! Although I've never much liked being in the sun, and I have looked after my skin reasonably well. My current thinking is if I can slow things down from this point I will stand a chance of looking good at 70 lol.

Although a woman in the office next door thought I was in my 30s today! She really meant it too, and looked shocked when I said I'm 50 next year. I actually hugged her!!

Pupsiecola · 08/03/2018 18:42

Just caught up. It's me going to Prague, on Monday to Friday. Thanks for remembering! I've got my currency, and I ordered a travel hairdyer. And I'm trying a new dry shampoo. The Kloriane wasn't working for me surprisingly (as I love their shampoo and conditioner and always buy some when in France up a mountain). Anyway, this is Philip Kingsley and much more £££ but I bought the travel size. I have to stop washing and drying my hair daily. It sucks my will to live. I have a lot of hair and it's kinky and has a mind of it's own. (I'm not really doing very well with my frugality the last couple of days. I blame stress).

I used to love Trinny and Susannah too. Trinny has admitted to botox and fillers. She's very open about it. And she confesses to still smoking. I think it is now very obviously re the botox and fillers. But she makes me howl with laughter sometimes. She's brilliant! Susannah has just lost quite a lot of weight and got very fit. They should stage a come back!

miffy2 · 08/03/2018 18:49

SALLIE the P&M HA is nice and runny and fragrance-free :)

mintmagnummm · 08/03/2018 18:55

Pupsie I'm glad the scan didn't show a tumour but I am very sorry to hear that it's dementia Thanks

JDSTER · 08/03/2018 19:00

You’re welcome pupsie. Let me know when you’ve tried it- have you had a sniff Grin

Scan results not so good then.....
How are you feeling?
I hope you can still have a good trip away.

I’m 42, also wish I’d been religious about sunscreen. Always been interested in skincare but not what mattered!

No purchases in London today (well a tshirt from Arket but not very exciting). I had a look at Dr Jart stuff in Selfridges. Seemed nice to test, just not convinced I needed another moisturiser.

Twoo · 08/03/2018 19:00

Bo’ Skinesta Grin Im not dry but not oily either. In some places I have patches of tiny thread veins (near nose, places on cheeks) I remove my moisturiser, serum, sun screen and make up every day and cleanse & moisturise twice a day. I use some sort of mask once a week.

Twoo · 08/03/2018 19:06

Is it acceptable to post a none identifying photo of a small patch of face skin Blush

That way you can all see what I need. It would be tomorrow as no natural light left today.

SophieLion · 08/03/2018 19:16

Pupsie - I echo what Mint says above 🌺🌺

Bo (or anyone else who knows): you advise in your info sheets to wait 2 weeks between starting new products. I think you mention somewhere that cleansers probably don't need such a long wait. Would the same also apply to moisturisers?

Asking because I am going to start my TO retinoid this weekend (and use 2 times a week at start) but I'm also (impatiently) looking at my new (unopened) Toleriane ultra moisturisers.... would it be a completely bad idea to start with them as well perhaps during the middle of next week? Or wait the full 2 weeks? I am definitely going to wait the two weeks before starting the vit C.

My skin is looking much better. I have no new spots!!! Smile(Hope I'm not jinxing it now....) Just waiting for two old ones to go - they are certainly taking their time....AngryAngry

SallieSallow · 08/03/2018 19:22

Twoo a photo would be a great idea.

Pupsie I'm sorry to hear about your Dad Flowers I hope you can still enjoy Prague.

I'm 48 too. I've always been 'in' to skincare but wasn't using the right things either, used Clinique for years then lots of ranges from QVC. I never used sunscreen as I'm not fair skinned and don't sunbathe I thought I didn't need it Blush I was doing ok (genes and oily skin) on the ageing front until the 2-3 years ago when I started to get crows feet, hooded eyes and sagging round my jowls. People used to think I was 5-10 years younger but definitely look my age now Sad

That's great news Enid glad the hair gods were on your side Smile

Thank you for the P&M HA review Miffy I think I'll get that after payday.

Pupsiecola · 08/03/2018 19:28

I don't know how I feel tbh. My relationship with my family has never been particularly healthy and my mental and emotional wellbeing has improved vastly since I went no contact.

Sallie (remind me who you were before?!) isn't it scary how you can bob along without really looking any older for what seems like years, but then at pivotal points it's like ageing has hit the fast forward button! What is that all about!

Also, can someone tell me this. When I trialled contact lenses last year I looked older than when I wear my glasses, in terms of the quality of my skin. My skin looked different. Why?!

Tantpoke · 08/03/2018 19:57

Pupsie and Sallie I'm a year younger than both of you and also look at least 10 years younger, which I put down to being a touch overweight Blush and having always worn foundation or a moisturiser with SPF ever since living in Oz and New Zealand for a couple of years many moons ago, plus also what I'm doing now skin care wise.

pupsie I work with early stage Dementia patients sometimes and they are mostly very sweet albeit a bit confused, when they get angry its due to the confusion and fear involved. It gets more intense though the further along it gets. It's a bit of a bumpy ride but there are many experts out there who will help your Dad along the way, he will be in good hands esp now he has been diagnosed.

pupsie. Thanks so much for adding the Neo strata. I think Sallie was user something or other.

Lonesurvivor · 08/03/2018 19:58

pupsie sorry to read the update about your fatherFlowers
Hope you have a lovely time in Prague, sounds like you need a break and take time for yourself.

Bo I've only used indeed retinol and currently TO I've liked both but as you said have nothing to compare them to and I'm confused as to what would be better alternatives. Hoping if we go to Spain in summer to stock up in a pharmacy but again don't know what to look for.
re Dr Dray I find her hard to watch, she's so fidgety and I don't think her skin looks great!

SallieSallow · 08/03/2018 20:01

Pupsie I was userallusedup until recently.

Yes definitely agree about the sudden fast forward. I looked older than my age in my teens and early 20s but barely changed or aged at all from mid 20s - late 30s. I did age a bit after I turned 40, but it was quite gradual until 45 then Shock Shock Shock everything just seemed to go at once, and I started gaining weight too which doesn't help.
