Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Tant I use my Vichy thermal water and eucerin 5% urea face cream after.

I got that with the lrp cleanser too, have you tried the avene extremely gentle cleanser? Much better!

SallieSallow · 05/03/2018 20:12

Tant I've never used LRP toleraine as JDSTER mentioned about the film and it put me off.

A friend bought the tret for me in Spain (her idea, I didn't ask but we're the same age and moan to each other about similar issues with our skin so can see why she thought of it) but I've given her first dibs on getting it back if I decide not to use it.

Tantpoke · 05/03/2018 20:25

mint I tried the avene gentle cleanser a couple of years ago and disliked it for the same reason plus it didnt remove my make up very well.

sallie no problem, I've gone down a different avenue instead I've now purchased a derma roller which I will use with my vit c and copper peptides.

EnidButton · 05/03/2018 20:39

Thank you for the good hair vibes Tant Grin

Get well soon Sallie FlowersCake

I never get any residue from the toleriane. I use it on a dry face rather than damp, wipe off with wet flannel and then rinse a few time with hands. Also use a spray water afterwards. Wonder why I don't have the film problem?

EnidButton · 05/03/2018 20:40

I don't use it to remove make up though. Just as a second cleanse after oil balm or on its own in the morning.

yongnian · 05/03/2018 20:50

bo Rita got my vote too in the style stakes...so cool. Naming products....hmmm I might have to pass there Grin yes there is quite a bit of sheepery going on on ITG (and they all seem to name check at least one glossier product which makes me do the oprah face) but I like it for the nosiness factor of seeing Other People’s Products....you know me and shelf porn....Grin
sallie Flowers sinus infections are the pits. Feel better soon!
enid good hair vibes good hair vibes good hair vibes
mint bha does this to me...i,ve only tried the Paula’s choice one and wondered if it was the silicone rather than the bha itself...
Sorry I’ve now can’t see who was saying about LRP dermo cleanser leaving a film...it doesn’t do this to me either...I spray first then use a Rosewater soaked pad to remove.

JDSTER · 05/03/2018 20:54

I also wouldn’t use toleriane as a makeup remover. I’ve always used toleriane as a second cleanse but as Sallie has expertly recalled, I find it leaves a film on the skin, despite rinsing very thoroughly. I suspect if your skin is on the oilier spectrum like mine, a film is more noticeable. I have been using it on and off over the last month or two because of the cold and very mild flakiness due to differin. The new toleriane hydrating gentle cleanser doesn’t leave a film but not in UK yet.

pupsie and bo your parcels are on their way. pupsie I’ll warn you the voicemail mask smells funky Grin It’s not gone off- it’s just how it smells!

Tantpoke · 05/03/2018 21:11

I don't ever use Toleraine as a make up remover and always apply to a dry face.

I did use the avene extreemly gentle cleanser to remove make up tho and it was rubbish at that, it left a film regardless of how i used it.

I will however next time spritz with thermal water after, its just that I used it in the shower with a flannel thinking that that would not leave a film. It did and I felt dirty so used my facewash after.

mintmagnummm · 06/03/2018 06:45

Tant the avene one is now different, new ingredients. I didn't like it previously either but have recently started using it again and it's definitely improved!
Yong that's odd, what bha do you use now if any?

SophieLion · 06/03/2018 07:50

Sallie - get well soon. Thanks

Tant - I've also never had a film with the LRP toleriane cleanser. On the contrary, my skin feels super clean to the point I don't want to touch it with my hands! Perhaps the film is something to do with skin type?

I also use it as a second cleanse if wearing make-up or SPF and generally do the same routine as the French cheekbones lady (no flannel normally either).

Enid - what are you doing with your hair? Major change or trim?

Pupsiecola · 06/03/2018 08:11

Thanks JDSTER! Looking forward to trying it (smell notwithstanding).

yongnian · 06/03/2018 10:14

mint I don’t use any now cos not sure if it was the bha generally or the pc one. I’m sure it would probably be useful to me but would have to find one without silicone to be sure.
Oh, that’s another product people can have if anyone wants it?

mintmagnummm · 06/03/2018 10:22

Yong I don't think my one had silicone? It's the 2% bha from Paula's choice, I could be mistaken though. Think I'm going to have to stop using it though :-(

yongnian · 06/03/2018 10:39

mint sorry, I just looked at mine and it’s the 1% bha calm redness relief which I went for as a gentle starter (and meant to be good for rosacea which I have). It has dimethicone in it, a silicone I never seem to get on well with. Is it in the 2% as well?
To be honest, I might try the TO salicylic at some point as it says silicone free.

Tsmummy08 · 06/03/2018 12:07

Victoria Health no longer stocking Deciem?! Wow, how quickly things change... Need to go back and read the last 6 pages in case this has already been discussed, sorry if so but I was surprised! Blush

mintmagnummm · 06/03/2018 12:07

Yong no there's no silicone in mine, bo recommended it as she knows my skin is funny with silicone although I think I'm ok with dimethicone.

Lonesurvivor · 06/03/2018 12:15

Just saw Pestle and Mortar are launching on qvc UK tomorrow with their hylauronic acid. If it's on easy pay I think I'll indulge, have only heard great things about P&M.

Surprised to hear about Victoria Health too, I wonder what will happen with TO, I'd hate to see it fail the beauty industry does need shaking up.

Tantpoke · 06/03/2018 13:21

mint I have both PC 2% clear anti redness extra strength exfoliating solution BHA (in a mid blue bottle) and 2% skin perfecting solution BHA (in a white bottle) neither of which give me spots, quite the opposite, neither have silicone in the ingredients.

I know there is a 3rd BHA so maybe you have that one and it has silicone in it?

Thats so annoying I get a film from the lrp toleraine dermo cleanser and some of you don't Hmm. Maybe I do have a slightly different one or something?? Confused

Tantpoke · 06/03/2018 13:27

mint you might have this one:

PC clear anti redness exfoliaiting solution regular strength 2% BHA

Which I chose not to buy out of the 3 she has because it had such a long list of ingredients compared to the other 2.

Tantpoke · 06/03/2018 13:33

I'm confused Confused sorry my posts were to yong re PC BHA

Tantpoke · 06/03/2018 13:34

to both actually, my brain is tired, sorry

mintmagnummm · 06/03/2018 14:02

Grintant. I've got the 2% perfecting one with no silicones and a very short ingredient list.

botemp · 06/03/2018 14:28

mint, it's tough to say whether it's a purge or just a reaction to the BHA, it's really a wild card and your build up is somewhat off the norm. I'm hesitant to say to carry on as your skin is so unpredictable, perhaps trying the 1% calm would be better? Maybe you and yong can swap?

tant, wrt LRP residue it's either oily skin issue and/or soft water. The LRP Toleriane Hydrating cleanser is a better pick in that sense and I've yet to see complaint of film with the more recent Avene formulation.

yong, well I'm thinking of officially naming the Vichy, Bastard as the nozzle is faltering. I suspect someone dropped it Hmm

JDSTER, thanks I'll keep an eye out for it!

Yeah, I just got that VH email too. It doesn't spell a lot of good, VH was the first one to really get behind DECIEM and I think they referred to each other very affectionately, reconnected souls o something like that. After the exodus of some of the most trusted employees and now a company they had very close ties with... well at least it wasn't announced through Instagram this time.

Sorry, meant to post this link with it as well, it's from the Skincare Addiction Reddit UK list for TO/Deciem alternatives, it's where I found out about the Skin Pep company:

Thanks bo I'm happy to swap with you Yong? Mine is the smaller travel size one.

Are there any other products that come to mind that will help with my texture issues bo?
