Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Hi Thin and Twoo 👋🏻

I almost bought the Vichy vit C today. I was in the queue in the shop with it in my basket and everything! But I bottled out because of the HA and put it back. Still tempted. I still don't uunderstand the different HA formulas/types and I really want to be ok with it. When so thought I got break outs from it, my skincare knowledge and routine wasn't as carefully thought through or steady as it is now so it's possible I was wrong,

What do you think bo? As you're using the Vichy C? Is it worth the risk? Or do I go with meik8? Realise you probably can't answer but just whilst I'm pondering.

Consider it a distraction technique from the impending hair appointment.

Skin surprisingly bright today even though I'm peak pmt. I think eating an egg with lunch every other day or so is doing good.

Pupsiecola · 04/03/2018 22:04

Sorry for the late reply JDSTER. I took myself off to see I, Tonya. Yes, same address. Thank you so much.

Sorry for confusing ppl re the mineral water. My bad.

bananafish81 · 04/03/2018 22:05

Re the Elta MD sunscreen questions, I use the SPF 46 UV clear (non tinted) - see attached pic

It's really lovely - feels very comfortable and is supposedly calming for acne prone skin

Not sure if it's the Duac or just maybe hormones having a lull (no idea what they're doing as I don't temp since stopping fertility treatment, so no idea if I'm having cycles or not, at 45-70 odd days I assume not) but my breakouts seem to have calmed a little. Too early for the oral antibiotics to be working but am hopeful that a three pronged attack might help. Despite careful hand washing I have already managed to bleach a bath towel (how?! I dry my hands on a hand towel, I don't touch the bath towel?!) which is a known issue with the benzoyl peroxide. Ah well! If it helps the acne I'll sacrifice the bath linen!!

What was the mineral water confusion? I almost bought the Vichy today whilst almost getting the vit C serum. (3 for 2 at boots) It's cheaper than the Avene which I'm loyal too usually.

EnidButton · 04/03/2018 23:13

Too is to.

yongnian · 04/03/2018 23:23

Shouty caps is a definite thing bo you’re not making it up. Hmm liking the sound of the baby Whamisa...also been looking at the secret key ones, thinking aloe perhaps....
sophie have you seen the website Into The Gloss? It’s the stuff of dreams for nosing at other people’s bathrooms Grin

Pupsiecola · 05/03/2018 08:56

*Enid" I had asked "which Vichy mineral water". I thought I'd read there were two, but I must have been thinking about another brand (Avene?). Someone mentioned it when talking about LRP water being too chalky (which was my experience). I've ordered the Vichy 🐑🐑🐑

SophieLion · 05/03/2018 09:41

Hi Bo - thank you. Yes, I think that's the video I was thinking of. Woman looks the same (although now I've managed to lose the photo too!). Thanks for the SC links.

Oooo I didn't realise there was a whole "bathroom products" thing. I will definitely check those out!!!

Pupsie - what did you think of I, Tonya? I started watching it here the other day but turned it off. I like true stories and there was great acting but I think my psychology was all wrong: just got sad at the mum's treatment of Tonya and then the same with her first boyfriend. Maybe I will continue watching another day.

yongnian · 05/03/2018 10:18

I’ve clicked...(normal postal service has resumed and I’m still not far from my bed ill, fatal combo).
I’ve gone for a baby version of Whamisa deep pink rich - paid a bit more for a U.K. based shipping so that if I like it I can order from Korea and the wait won’t seem so long.
I did love the Whamisa mask I bought ages ago from Sephora so have high hopes for my skin liking the fermented/plant type ingredients...
does tiny and ridiculous happy dance

botemp · 05/03/2018 10:21

Does anyone else fantasise about Sali coming to your bathroom and having a chat. Well I used to anyhow, until I read an interview with her where she mentioned she likes going through people's bathroom cupboards at a party but that she'd think those with very empty and neatly organised cupboards were somehow disturbed, at which point I thought, oh no, Sali will think I'm an axe murderer Shock

I forgot about ITG top shelvies though, I think I got a bit bored with them as they were all such sheep in a way. Either natural very expensive US brands or very expensive high performance cosmeceutical brands.

Enid, you're right I can't say really, but the Medik8 is a safer pick in more ways than one. HA is a tough one to predict as there's so many forms of it but it's all one INCI name.

Banana, good to hear the acne is calming down a bit.

Yong, if you get it, I think you should name the wee baby Whamisa, Seamus? Grin I'm now tempted name all my products since they're all so well loved. Sali will definitely think I'm a proper psycho then Blush

Just click on the Su Man link in the post, Sophie. I think MN hides the preview once you've seen it.

I had similar stomach churning feelings with I, Tonya. I was loosely expecting a film about the competitive world of figure skating but it was more the full on confrontational violence of ice hockey. Perhaps it was an accurate portrayal but it was a little too overt and almost voyeuristic IME. Allison Janney did do an exceptional job and the Oscar win is a worthy acknowledgement.

EnidButton · 05/03/2018 10:42

Thanks bo. Medik8 it is.

Pupsie I found the LRP water chalky too. Might try Vichy next time, although really like Avene, see what it's like.

SophieLion · 05/03/2018 11:11

Hi Bo, I meant I can't find the photo I had saved on my phone (I think in previous thread you had sent round a video and a photo together and I saved only the photo). Anyway the link you just sent works so thanks.

Must check out the Sali bathrooms thing. I'm intrigued!!

Yes a worthy Oscar win for the mum in I, Tonya. Was looking at the dresses before. Some were just gorgeous and some were ShockConfusedShockConfused All that money plus stylists.... who lets them go out like that....?!

And Emma Watson's fringe????!!! First time (in my humble opinion) that I've seen her look anything less than lovely. Reminded me of Angelina Jolie in Girl Interrupted.... not a good look. (I'm really sorry if any of you actually do have a fringe like that)

Pupsiecola · 05/03/2018 12:14

My sheep look like rabbits?

It would be wrong to say I enjoyed the film. Having lived through "the incident" I knew was to expect. I came home and read more about Tonya and Nanacy, and Tonya's awful, awful mum and life. I watched some interviews, and I watched some skating from the 1994 Olympics. I'm glad I saw it. Films like that make me want to be the best, most supportive mum I can be (I never had that).

MrsDOnofrio · 05/03/2018 13:00

I ordered a selection pack of Tonymoly sheet masks a few weeks ago. I got around to opening them this weekend and clearly I didn’t look properly at the pictures on Amazon. One contains snail trail Envy and another contains placenta Envy Envy Envy (although the picture on the front appears to be freshly shelled peas Hmm).

I know there is a lot of love on here for the snail slime, the placenta maybe not so much. Neither are going anywhere near my face. Would anyone like them?

SophieLion · 05/03/2018 13:56

ThanksPupsie. I do want to finish the film. Just need to be in the right state of mind.

MrsD - are you not even tempted to try them?!

Bo - I did the facial massage from the video you sent and my skin looks great: even and glowing (and I had v little sleep last night and was too lazy/tired to put any make up on). Was most impressed!

Attaching the photo of the massage lady as I found it. Not sure it is the same lady though .....

Flowers Pupsie

I'll pass on the Tony moly sheetmasks, IIRC they have a lot of fragrance and possibly alcohol in them.

Sophie, yes it's pretty good for taking down puffiness, albeit temporary (all the face yoga promises are nonsense) but it makes you look fresh and alive again. I think it also works well if you do it the night before, you wake up looking really well rested. The picture is from the Chizu Saeki book, it's a fun read and she's very cute and magically eternally youthful looking.

I didn't realise Emma Watson was still acting Confused
Rita Moreno won the night for me sartorially speaking for wearing the same dress she wore to the Oscars in 1962. Also honourable mention to Agnès Varda for making Gucci look absolutely adorable.

Sophie I did exactly the same with I, Tonya. I watched it halfway through and also couldnt bear to watch any more for the same reasons as you.

Re Thermal water I only bought the LRP one because it was cheaper than the others that day, I will try out Avene and Vichy depending on the price. I love using it.

I watched the video of massage lady and just couldnt get past the rubbing of the ears 36 times without laughing.

EnidButton · 05/03/2018 17:54

Please don't mention bad fringes. Hair appointment is this week. 😰 Don't curse it! Grin

So my annual Spring ish present to myself, this year, is a load of Elemis stuff. Milk bath, frangipani salt glow and papaya enzyme peel mask. All tried, tested and loved. Comes with 5 generous travel sized samples. Picked marine cream x2 for DH because he really likes it and it makes his skin enviably smooth and soft. Monoi oil because it's what I wear instead of perfume in warm weather . Flash balm as I use it anyway and some skin capsule things that I know nothing about but the ingredients looked safe enough. Looking forward to a pampering session at the weekend. Hopefully with nice hair

EnidButton · 05/03/2018 17:55

And I need to watch this massage video. 💆🏻‍♀️

Tantpoke · 05/03/2018 18:34

enid I'm sure you'll end up with luscious professional locks >swishy hair<

I've been looking at the AF site then their main US SA site which has more by way of explanation and I am tempted to buy the ascorbic acid L powder, copper peptide 2ml and sea kelp coral but I'm just not sure Confused how to best prepare them once they arrive and how long they will in fact actually last, any ideas or useful tried and tested info anyone?

I have researched online but still none the wiser.

mintmagnummm · 05/03/2018 18:49

I'm not sure if the bha is breaking me out 🤔. It seems every time I use it I come up in under the skin sore lumps that take ages to go away! I've been using long enough now for it not to be purging surely?!

Tantpoke · 05/03/2018 18:53

mint what are you using before and after it?

SallieSallow · 05/03/2018 18:54

I'm down with a sinus lurgy, skin still crap (sallow and flaky) but hopefully will perk up once the weather gets better and I shake this sinus thing off.

FEBRUARY EMPTIES, TRIALS, AND PLANNED PURCHASES

ROUTINE very pared down at the moment due to skin playing up and not feeling well, will add actives back in once it settles down

AM
NIOD Sanskrit sarpons cleanser
Vichy thermal spray
Skinpep HA
FAB ultra repair
Bioderma cicabio spf 50

PM
Hylamide cleansing oil
FAB cleanser
Vichy thermal spray
Skinpep HA
FAB ultra repair
Cicaplast flaky skin treatment

EMPTIES:

Hand chemistry HA body spray yes AGAIN
I love this stuff but it's not economical at all so going to try and find a replacement, may go for the hand chemistry HA gel instead but still in austerity measures so using up some other body moisturisers first.

Hylamide sub q serum
Also much loved but am testing the Skinpep HA currently as it's a lot cheaper, I do wonder if my skin is missing the subq though as it's playing up so much at the moment, so may well end up repurchasing.

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL:

Skinpep HA - been using for about 2 weeks, really like the texture (watery gel) no stickiness or oiliness, & no reaction but my skin is not good at the moment. Not sure if it's missing subq as mentioned above or just going through a crap phase due to weather/lurgy. Only got a trial size so may well go back to Subq, reckon I've got another couple of weeks' worth in the tube so will decide then.

Active formulas Vit c 15% - used for about 3 weeks. Watery serum so good texture for me, no reaction yet. Have parked temporarily due to flaking/sensitivity. Don't think this product caused that at all but my skin hasn't tolerated Vit c very well in the past so am leaving it out till I'm back on a more even keel.

PLANNED PURCHASES:

Skinpep Vit C - already purchased trial size but want to give the active formulas Vit c more of a trial before moving on to anything else
Skinpep eye gel patches - already purchased but not used yet, eyes are sore/watery with lurgy so waiting for that to pass
Tretinoin 0.025% (waits for shouty caps Smile) already purchased but not decided whether to use it or not, & if I do will not be until my skin is much more settled.

SPECIAL MENTION
Bioderma cicabio spf 50
Nice light gel like texture, works well under makeup, has skin care/healing properties too and think it's probably more 'protective' than biore etc so will be a good option for summer .

Tantpoke · 05/03/2018 18:59

Sallie where did you buy your 0.025 tret from?

If you decide you don't like it in the future can I buy it off you, opened or not? TIA

I did put the AF vit C 15% in my basket earlier but wasnt sure whether to go for the powder instead.

Tantpoke · 05/03/2018 19:02

LRP toleraine dermo cleanser, it just leaves a film on my face even when I use a flannel and water to wash it off which I really dont like, does this happen to everyone?

This means I end up second cleansing unneccessarily with my face wash Hmm
