Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

just wanted to point out the weirdness of bitcoin payment ??? from my email this morning

mintmagnummm · 04/03/2018 13:43

Ok bo I'll try dry cotton pad then a Vichy rinse thank you.

I have an EL ANR if anyone wants it?? Only used few times

botemp · 04/03/2018 13:45

Tant the language used in that message sounds well dodgy. I'd call up your credit card company just in case and confirm no suspicious activity is going on with your card and to block any future attempts. Really need to run now, hope all credit cards and faces remain in place.

Ooo mustbethin I like the look of this if Cerave brings it over to Boots

www.cerave.com/our-products/moisturizers/skin-renewing-day-cream

and maybe mustbethin you could try Niveas 2 in 1 makeup remover as their eye makeup removers are very similar like that (which I have tried and tested and prefer the nivea) if you cant get hold of the garnier 2 in 1 which you like.

JDSTER · 04/03/2018 14:04

No shouty caps (what does that even meanConfused) from me Tant. Just seemed a futile exercise with no gain and likely pain Grin. What retinoid will you be trying next?

Hello to thin. Your rosacea sounds bad but I’m glad you’re getting on top of it

MustBeThin · 04/03/2018 14:11

Tant I love the Cerave cleanser, I've probably been using it over a year now. It looks like they are only getting 5 products at the min. Foaming cleanser, hydrating cleanser, moisturising lotion, moisturising lotion with SPF and a hand cream.

Do you use nivea to remove a full face of makeup or just your eye makeup?

Tantpoke · 04/03/2018 14:12

jd shouty caps is when you type with capital letters to display your anger / frustration (it was intended for Bo) Grin your finger wagging just confirmed I was making a huge mistake.

I have no idea what retinol to try next, I will stick to my TO retinoid 2% emulsion as I have an unopened bottle of it. my other bottle ran out yesterday. the Niod products seem to be making a huge difference to my skin coupled with the retinoid unless ofcourse its the antibiotics I'm on which finish tomorrow.

JDSTER · 04/03/2018 14:14

SHOUTY CAPS GrinGrin
I never knew Blush

Tantpoke · 04/03/2018 14:15

mustbethin I have only used the nivea double effects eye remover not the nivea 2 in 1. (but it looks as similar to the garnier 2in1 as the eye make up removers are to each other iyswim)

Tantpoke · 04/03/2018 14:16

JD it might just be Bo that calls them shouty caps but thats ultimately what it means.

MustBeThin · 04/03/2018 14:18

Thanks JD its not really that bad tbh, although sometimes I feel like it is. It's more irritating than anything. I realise millions of people have rosacea way worse than I do. My skin is generally smooth and pale with slightly pink cheeks unless I'm flushed then my cheeks or nose get really red, hot and sore like a sunburn. It doesn't happen too often these days though and thankfully can't be seen under makeup.

MustBeThin · 04/03/2018 14:19

Thanks Tant I'll look into it.

Twoo · 04/03/2018 14:29

Thank you for the warm welcome ladies. I’m slowly reading through it. There is so much knowledge & information available. I’m loving it!

My current routine is not worthy of being posted Blush. Hopefully in time I will develop a forum sharing worthy routine Grin

miffy2 · 04/03/2018 15:13

FEBRUARY EMPTIES, TRIALS, AND PLANNED PURCHASES

ROUTINE

AM
Cleanse: Dermalogica Essential cleanser
Tone: Garnier honey flower toner
Vitamin C:Drunk Elephant C Firma
HA:Vichy Mineral 89 (although currently replaced with a Bare Minerals serum that I want to use up!)
Eyes: Olay Eyes ultimate eye cream
Cream: will depend on weather but either Ceramidin, Avene Hydrance Riche or Belif True Creme Moisturizing Balm
SPF: Currently loving Eucerin Daily Protection SPF30

PM
Remove makeup: Garnier gentle eye makeup remover (non-oily) and Dermalogica Pre-cleanse balm
Cleanse: LRP Hydrating cleanser

3x per week: BR P50 and a cream (rotate between Avene extremely rich compensating cream, LRP Double Repair and Cerave PM).
Eye cream: Kiehl’s midnight recovery

3x per week: 0.025% tretinoin cream, followed by one of the night creams mentioned above.
Eye cream: Verso Eye serum

1x per week: hydrating face mask or hydrating toner (AB 7-skin method) followed by a night cream from the above rotation

EMPTIES:
Sol de janeiro shower gel and body (‘Bum Bum’!) cream - indulgent purchase for my birthday last September and I am hooked. Delicious, rich, smells of coconut and vanilla so perfect for summer months. Have repurchased in the post-Christmas Cult Beauty sales.
Essence volume stylist mascara - cheap and cheerful, does what it is supposed to and I really like it.
Korres fig shower gel and body butter - long-standing favourites
Living Proof Restore hair mask - doesn’t feel the most hydrating when you apply it but it works well and leaves hair lovely and shiny. Won’t repurchase for now.
TBS cleansing balm - another long-standing favourite. Already have a back up and will revert once the Dermalogica balm is used up

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL:
-Loving Bioderma Atoderm shower oil and intensive balm (1 month) for my sensitive chest area.

-Also really impressed with the iGlow eyelash serum after 6 weeks although I am seeing more dramatic results on my brows - seeing hairs in places that were bald for years (now trying to resist the urge to pluck while they all grow in). Eyelashes slowly improving as well.

-I have only been using the Olay eye cream for 3 weeks but already I can say I love it. My makeup goes on smoothly without a need for primer in that area, my eye area appears brighter too.

-I bought an Emma Hardie travel kit on offer in M&S and it has a full size primer/moisturiser/spf30 so I have been using that on days when I know I am not doing much/wearing makeup/going to work etc. Feels lovely on, no reactions, has fragrance but it settles.

-Maybelline Total Temptation mascara = complete rubbish IMO. Such a horrible scratchy brush, mascara smudged and flaked and it was really hard to get any product onto my lashes without running the risk of scratching my eyeballs. Binned it after 3 tries.

PLANNED PURCHASES:
Awaiting IT Cosmetics CC powder and a re-purchase of ABH Brow Wiz pencil from Beautylish, some products from SkinActives (lash/brow serum, some vitamin C and an anti-oxidant booster. Also re-purchased DE Vitamin C along with the tinted spf.
In a couple of months I hope to buy Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair shampoo and mask.

SPECIAL MENTION:
Back using Sisley concealer and love how bright (but not cakey) my under eye area looks

BagelGoesWalking · 04/03/2018 15:25

Yong I like the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner very much. Have only seen about 2 ppl who didn't like it. You can buy a small 100 ml bottle from some stockists (Beauty and Seoul are one) or on eBay. I chose it for minimal ingredients, no fragrance. It does have about 1% silicone in whole bottle if that's an issue.

Have you tried Moogoo Milk Wash for your body? I haven't yet but supposed to be very good for eczema/sensitive skin people. Pure Potions also do shower/shampoo stuff.

JDSTER · 04/03/2018 15:46

miffy can you remind me of your skin type please? You’re using rich moisturisers but is that tret related dryness?

miffy2 · 04/03/2018 15:59

JDSTER I always thought my skin was dry but in fact it is more dehydrated. I have always used emollient/heavy creams as my skin feels better that way. I don't think the tret has made any difference in that area. If I were to go from serum to spf in the morning and skip a cream, my skin would be parched by lunchtime. :)

Tantpoke · 04/03/2018 16:04

I quite like the look of this with the added skincare ingredients of HA and Moringa seed extract so long as its not so sheer / barely there it doesnt cover up.

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Hairmageddon looms...
yongnian · 04/03/2018 17:23

sophie I’ve actually trimmed it all down a bit Grin. In true skincare nerd style, I keep AM products in one draw and PM in another...so that helps. I also actually haven’t/don’t change my routine very much for ages, skin is hasn’t so many different issues if something is working and not causing a problem I stick to it like glue. I also am very slow at processing decisions so tend to circle new products for aaaaaages before considering taking the plunge. And yes, I do only tend to use a product where it’s needed for reasons I will elaborate on in a mo...
bo patchwork quilt is right Grin Grin - here’s why in case anyone is wondering...i have rosacea on my cheeks and nose. I have a tendency to acne underneath my cheekbones which leaves purple/grey hyper pigmentation. I have very tetchy skin on my forehead and eyelids now which is prone to dermatitis in winter...and actually I never think ‘fuck it’ and rub it all in, as much as that made me laugh 😆 hence my overly precise skincare nerdism type routine.
Re toner recs, thanks bo and bagel some interesting sounding products for me to circle endlessly there Grin...i can tolerate a bit of silicone bagel but not much...I have been eyeing up the Whamisa for ages but if I can get a poor relation version, that would be good....
Welcome thin interesting to hear how you’ve got your rosacea under control being a fellow sufferer.
Talking of product recycling, whilst I know there is not a lot of love on here for TO anymore, I can offer their silicone primer to anyone who wants it. I really don’t know why I thought I’d be able to tolerate this as have previous form for not getting on well with silicone. It actually does give great base, but I then look far too made up for my liking (good if you like full coverage but I aspire to the concealer-only-I-woke-up-with-skin-this-good look, which is quite the challenge on my skin) so if anyone wants it, message me. Am still a bit snowed in and also in bed with some kind of pneumonia-thing, so might be a while posting but still...
Talking of which, off to sweat a bit more.....hopes for some skin-enhancing pore-cleansing beneficial side-effects

yongnian · 04/03/2018 17:32

Oh bagel sorry I missed your moogoo rec. I’ve not tried that one but did buy another soothing one of theirs...I had high hopes but I wasn’t massively impressed....the oils smelt stale for a start...really wanted to like this brand but it did put me off....I did buy some dermodex powder from them which was fine, though I’m not convinced that’s the root of my rosacea, so....dunno...interesting to hear you liked it, I will look again...

SophieLion · 04/03/2018 18:38

Really interesting reading all your routines. I always find it fascinating seeing other people's products in their bathrooms (makes me sound really nosy Grin)

Bo - where do you find the SC vit C for 120 EUR? The cheapest I've found so far is 103GBP (that's on discount - but for how long?!) on facethefuture.co.uk. It's 150 EUR here so more than the US.

Pupsie you had me worried there. Started thinking I might have bought the wrong thermal water as I had assumed there was only one Grin I've only seen the 150ml size here. I used to use the Beauty Flash balm years ago. Had forgotten about it.

JDSTER - thank you. Will try spreading and patting the HA then. I ended up giving the LRP HA serum away to a friend here in the end (didn't seem very popular on this thread Grin). I also have some Castalia chronoderm which I think I might end up giving away too!

Which reminds me, Bo had sent round a video with facial massage on one of the old threads and I just cannot find it now (saved the photo but not the video - it's an Asian lady with her hair in a bun). Does anyone have it handy?

Enid - thank you. Yes I noted that the Toleriane Ultra contains shea and I know it can be a tricky ingredient for some. But, you're right, I do seem ok with acids.

Hello Thin Smile

Thanks for the explanation Yong and hope you feel better soon Flowers

SophieLion · 04/03/2018 18:40

And I wanted to thank Bagel too for directing me to this thread. I'd actually spotted it a few times but I was a bit intimidated by the title and all the complex-sounding products! How wrong I was...!

SophieLion · 04/03/2018 19:14

In case anyone interested, eBay (UK) has the SC vit C for £89 and free delivery in UK. It looks like it's genuine and says genuine, etc

Still not sure if I want to buy it before trying the Vichy though

botemp · 04/03/2018 19:33

I'm pretty sure I haven't made up shouty caps, don't know where I picked it up. I always read all caps as a seething poorly restrained anger through clenched teeth for whatever reason. And whenever someone uses lol when talking about themselves or an odd add-on that doesn't really call for laughter as nervous laughter.

Yong, if you get the Whamisa (it's the pink deep rich one, forgot to mention before) on eBay from Korea it's only around 20GBP but they also sell wee baby ones for around 4GBP (both including shipping).

Sophie, have you seen the Sali Hughes In the Bathroom series on Youtube, it'll satisfy all your bathroom nosiness?

Skinceutical for 120 at EPP or Powesante, the latter always has a 10% off code, EPP occasionally has them. Shipping is high-ish with both so I only tend to order when I need to buy a variety of things as their lower prices usually mitigate the shipping costs.

Was it by any chance?

OP posts:
JDSTER · 04/03/2018 20:34

Sophie I was also thinking about Sali in the bathroom when I read your comment Grin.
I’m going to London this week and I’ll have time for a good nose round the shops. Do I need some Dr Jart ceramidin gel cream from Selfridges......
