Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

JD Shock Bit cheeky of them! Red isn't as good since they changed editors . I have a free subscription with the bank. Although I thought this months was pretty good.

This is interesting coming from La Roche Posay at sobs point. A stick on thing that syncs with your phone and tells you to "put some damn spf on girl, you're burning up!" or something more French sounding t.co/cfQUTkoA1y

I have to stuff to say but can't remember any of it because my brain is filled with sand. So, night night Smile 😴🌟

EnidButton · 26/02/2018 23:36

Sobs = some

mintmagnummm · 27/02/2018 06:34

I have one of those very sore red lumps on my temple, a spot on my forehead, a spot on my cheek and one on my chin 😩. I'm due on any day now.

JMAngel1 · 27/02/2018 06:46

Can I ask for a critique? My skin has acne and rosacea both helped by no dairy and soolantra respectively. Extremely oily and flaky with tendency to redness and very textured acne scarred skin - a little bit of scar pigmentation but more that it looks like an onion. Few ice pick scars too. Now got acne and rosacea under control, feel like can finally address ageing and scarring for first time in 45 years! So feeling excited that am finally starting to see results with fine lines disappearing and just a more plump skin with pores looking less obvious. However, am I overdoing it with actives?
AM
Sibu sea buckthorn seed oil soap
TO Niacinamide
TO HA B5
Edute House airy fairy spf50 - FINALLY found an spf that doesn't make me more oily or break me out/irritate eyes.

PM
Double cleanse SIBU
TO Gran Ret 2% every other night - tolerating well
TO alpha lipoid acid every other night - woah this stuff is serious - tingles a bit but pores and fine lines so much less noticeable next day and no redness so far - bit scared of it to be honest and feel like it might bite me in the ass in a few weeks time!
30 mins after actives, my precious soolantra.
No dedicated eye product, just take everything up to lash line.

I also spot treat any offenders with TO 2% sal and use Rodial X Treme Peel every 5 days for 10 mins.

What do you think - too much? Not enough? I have to say my skin has never looked better for me - still need mineral powder foundation but given that this time 2years ago I didn't want to leave my house because of my skin, the difference is remarkable. I always get scared at this point though and think, god what if I'm pushing it too far with actives to treat scarring and then trigger a rosacea/acne flare again - been here before.

JMAngel1 · 27/02/2018 06:52

Also should I put Niacinamide on before HA?
Should I put Niacinamide on at night before the actives - was reading that N reduces irritably of retinoids?
Also is it ok to take the retinoid and ALA up into eye area - TO say no re ALA but don't know if just protecting themselves and really its ok?

Tsmummy08 · 27/02/2018 09:31

JDSTER - I've managed to regrow my booty and my back is looking good so that's a result but DH keeps making "she-hulk" comments - I'm sure he'll let me know when he thinks I've taken it too far Grin

WRT your question about SPF, I found I couldn't tolerate using Retin-A at all in the summer, even with SPF 50 physical sunscreen, reapplication etc. So I stepped down to a less active vit A, and will probably do the same this year. I normally use Biore watery essence in the winter and will switch to Bareminerals primer (physical spf50) in the spring. I'm always on the hunt for a good SPF that doesn't give me spots or look dreadful!

Tsmummy08 · 27/02/2018 10:06

Bioderma Hydrabio creme - anyone used this? Have a vague memory of Pupsie liking it? Doing a 3 for 2 on Feelunique and trying to pad out the order with a moisturiser as my Ceramidin is running out (the horror!)

yongnian · 27/02/2018 10:13

tsmummy thanks for that, glad to hear you like it some much. Not tried the bioderma hydration creme but I like their hydrabio mist and bioderma generally - everything I've bought of theirs I've liked if that helps!

yongnian · 27/02/2018 10:13

Hydrabio, even

Pupsiecola · 27/02/2018 12:23

Yes, I love Hydrabio. It's really rich without being heavy.

SophieLion · 27/02/2018 14:06

I'm in thread 7 (I think) and just seen you're Dutch, Bo. How lovely! I have a particular fondness for the Dutch. I studied in Maastricht on the ERASMUS scheme and lots of Dutch friends SmileSmile

(for some reason I thought you were based in the US. Not sure why I thought that Hmm).

SallieSallow · 27/02/2018 19:09

Tsmummy that's interesting because I find my skin tolerates retinoids much better in summer. My skin is much more sensitive and prone to flaking and peeling in winter, this cold snap is killing me, my face stings when I go outside.

JDSTER I was using the Biore spf 50 last summer alternating with bioderma nude touch, but I'm not outdoorsy & on work days I don't spend much time outside at all. I did top up with either bioderma spf 30 spray or LRP spf 50 spray at the weekend or if I was going to the pub beer garden for a walk after work. My IT cosmetics cc cream has spf 50 uva and uvb protection too, I no longer rely on it alone (used to before this thread Blush) but I suppose it can't hurt to have an extra layer of protection. I really like the bioderma cicabio spf 50 so will keep using that this year with the spray spf top ups as necessary.

JMAngel I think I used nia before HA if I remember right, I don't really want to critique your routine though as I don't know much about some of the products you are using, especially the soolantra, is that on prescription? Have you been given any advice about what you can/can't use with it?

My skin looks crap today, the hylamide glow made not a jot of difference, I think with my skin tone I'd probably need to use it for a week or so to get the alleged glow. I'm really peely/flaky today too, I know that's due to the weather but wondering if the glow stuff might have exacerbated it.

MrsDOnofrio · 27/02/2018 19:15

Tsmummy I’ve been using the Bioderma Hydrabio Creme. I like it. Not too heavy, nicely moisturising, no noticeable fragrance

JDSTER · 27/02/2018 19:20

Thanks Tsmummy and Sallie for thoughts on SPF. I’ll add some bioderma to an on line order at some point. I’ve toyed with Elta M.D. but it’s got niacinamide and I do like to use Vit C in the morning.

I’ve been more flaky than usual Sallie due to the weather, central heating etc. I’ve ordered some Toleriane Riche, based on bananfish saying Dr Emma had recommended it for her dryness. I’ll use it at night, as needs be. Toleriane double repair moisturiser is lovely but not moisturising enough when skin is dry.

I’m managing well during the day with no primer. I’m using a touch of powder on
t-zone and continuing with blotting papers. I’ve just got some DHC ones which are powder free and pretty good.

JMAngel1 · 27/02/2018 20:45

Thanks Sallie, yes the soolantra is prescription - it's ivermectin and it's efficacy is based on the theory that rosacea is caused by an overgrowth of demodex mite. It should really be used on clean skin on its own but I've been using it for over a year now so have got the rosacea under control so feel happy to dilute it slightly by waiting 30mins after active to apply it. Not had any rebound rosacea since doing this thankfully.

Although I quite like Fabio.

EnidButton · 27/02/2018 22:12

Exfoliate not exfoliated! C'mon IPhone stop ruining the joke.

JDSTER · 27/02/2018 22:15

GrinGrinGrin

miffy2 · 27/02/2018 22:15

I added a single drop of facial oil to my foundation today (Kiko universal fit) and it gave me a healthy glow without looking like a mirror ball ;)

I also used a cream blush for a change and it was a really nice effect. It made me look more awake I think. I like a light dusting of powder between my brows, under my eyes and on my nose. I don't suffer from too much congestion though so it is not really an issue.

Tantpoke · 27/02/2018 22:16

enid Grin at the luminizer Halo Glitterball

JDSTER · 27/02/2018 22:20

The “V” area .....Hmm

Tantpoke · 27/02/2018 22:29

'The Perfect V' no less

EnidButton · 27/02/2018 22:30

I need a diagram because they're marketing the beauty creams for post waxing issues like itchy bumps but then there's a beauty must to 'neutralise odour'.

Imagine the meeting. "So like it'll be like femfresh but in fancy packaging so we can like sell it for £40 instead of a fiver? And we'll throw in a luminizer to make women worry their public bone is too dull."

although I'm looking at it (the range not my Fabio) and I bet it sells well

EnidButton · 27/02/2018 22:33

Do you think I might need it? What do you think? I feel like from this angle it looks a little bit dull...

Hang on, it's not letting me upload pics for some reason...
